Spending a summer is a dream of many, and millions of travelers worldwide flock there every year to visit iconic destinations like Barcelona, Rome, or Santorini. Sadly, those beautiful spots become busier than usual, and all the lines can get pretty exhausting.

So what to do if you still want to experience the fairytale-esque Europe but avoid the busy crowds? To get the most out of your trip, we’ve got a few tips for you. Here are the 8 incredible hidden gems in Europe to visit in 2024.

Santuario Madonna Della Corona, Spiazzi, Italy

Santuario Madonna Della Corona

Carved into the Monte Baldo Mountains in northern Italy, Santuario Madonna Della Corona is a hidden gem that will simply take your breath away. For long, the sanctuary has been a popular destination for spiritual pilgrimages, but you will enjoy it even if you’re not religious.

It provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and villages, and a peaceful atmosphere – perfect for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Around, you will also find many scenic hikes and nature paths.

Thanks to its location, it makes a great day trip from Verona or Lago di Garda. It’s best accessed by car, but there are also some public transport options.

Tavolara Island, Sardinia

If you’re planning a trip to Sardinia, don’t forget to include Tavolara Island in your itinerary. As a part of the Protected Marine Area, it boasts pristine beaches and excellent conditions for snorkeling, diving, and boat tours.

The island is also renowned for its great hikes. The most popular trail starts at Spalmatore di Terra beach and takes you to Pratone viewpoint. However, note that the terrain of Tavolara is rather challenging and all hikes require a guide and equipment, as most include a bit of rappelling and ferrata.

Love cinema? Aim to arrive mid-July, when the island becomes alive with the yearly Tavolara Film Festival. On the other hand, for hiking, we recommend you come in spring or fall to avoid the heat.

Islet of Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel, Azores

Bubbling volcanoes, lush nature, and quiet lagoons with turquoise waters. A vacation in the Azores already sounds fantastic. But there is one spot that stands out among others – the Islet of Vila Franca do Campo.

It’s set just off of the southern coast of São Miguel island. It’s shaped like a rocky ring with a lagoon in the middle, which makes it a great place for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The best part? Not many people know about it yet, which will turn your visit into an enchanting and serene beach experience.

Saturnia Hot Springs, Italy

If you find yourself in Tuscany this summer, don’t miss the Saturnia Hot Springs. This natural spa is set in the idyllic Tuscan countryside just a short drive from the spa town of Saturnia and is ideal for a rejuvenating retreat.

Don’t worry, visiting Saturnia Hot Springs won’t break the bank. Just the opposite – you can soak in the thermal waters and its healing properties completely for free. However, if you’d like to take your experience a bit further, you can treat yourself to a night in one of the exclusive resorts. The area is also known for its excellent dining options.

Elafonissi Beach, Crete, Greece

You don’t have to go all the way to the Bahamas to visit a pink sand beach. You will also find one in Crete, and it’s called Elafonissi Beach. What gives this seashore its iconic color are the washed-up remains of pink seashells mixed with soft sand. The waters there are unbelievably clean and warm, perfect for wading, swimming, and even observing colorful fish and sea turtles.

Note that this less-known piece of paradise is getting noticed. For the best experience, we recommend you come early in the morning, so you can have it to yourself.

On your way back, you can pop to the nearby Kedrodasos Beach, which is about a 10-minute drive away. Be careful, it’s rather rocky and the stones can be slippery, so you might need a good pair of sandals instead of flip-flops.

Bastei Bridge, Germany

Not much of a beach bum? We’ve also got something for outdoor enthusiasts. Bastei Bridge is a fascinating natural wonder set in Saxon Switzerland National Park in Germany (yes, the name is misleading indeed). It overlooks the Elbe River and offers stunning views of various rock formations and deep forests, and has a certain historical significance.

It was built on the grounds of a wooden bridge that was part of the Neurathen Castle, and you can explore its remains as well while there. Many hiking routes lead to the bridge. They’re suitable for all levels and have different lengths. Simply choose the one that best fits your schedule. At the park, there is also a souvenir shop, toilets, and a restaurant to refuel.

Studlagil Basalt Canyon, Iceland

Iceland is famed for its unparalleled natural beauty. And Studlagil Basalt Canyon could easily be the most mesmerizing attraction there is.

The canyon is about 500 meters long and surrounded by up to 30 meters high basalt columns. Their volcanic origin gave them a dark color, which contrasts well with the bright blue river. All that creates a dramatic landscape worth a photoshoot or two.

Several hiking trails surround the area, and each of them offers a different view of the canyon. Thanks to its remote location, untouched natural beauty and solitude are guaranteed, and you’re likely to spot local wildlife, such as native birds and reindeer.

Meteora, Greece

The word Meterora means “suspended in the air” and that’s exactly what this place is about – it’s a complex of historic monasteries set atop tall rock formations and will provide you with an unforgettable experience.

It was established by monks seeking solitude and spiritual refuge. Today, it serves as a place to meditate, hike, and savor the panoramic vistas. You can also learn about the history of Meteora by exploring the monasteries, or through guided tours and museum exhibits.

While Alabama might not be known as a vacation destination like Florida or California, it boasts fantastic attractions that will make your stay a blast. However, you don’t have to stick around the most popular tourist spots. How about you visit something unique no other state offers?

On this list, you will find the 7 incredible hidden gems in Alabama to visit in 2024 that will make your friends and family want to vacation in the Cotton State too. Here they are.

Alabama’s Natural Bridge, Haleyville

Natural Bridge in Winston County is another hidden natural wonder of Alabama. It’s 148 feet long and towers up to 60 feet, which makes it the largest natural bridge east of the Rockies.

To get there, you have to hike a 2-mile-long trail. But don’t worry, the terrain isn’t difficult. After you come back, you can buy souvenirs at a tiny gift shop and refuel at a picnic area. The site is open all year round and there is a small admission fee – so come prepared, you might need cash.

Rattlesnake Saloon, Tuscumbia

Source: Lee Stevenson (Google Maps)

Are you a fan of Western movies? In that case, you simply must visit Rattlesnake Saloon in northwest Alabama. This unique restaurant features old-timey saloon decor, fantastic dishes, horseback rides, and live music.

However, it’s not just the Western theme that makes this place so special. It’s nestled inside a natural cave, which will take your dining experience to a completely different level.

Tinglewood Carvings, Montevallo

With its Tinglewood Carvings, Orr Park is yet another nature preserve that has been kept secret for years. And you now have a chance to discover it. But why Orr in particular? The story goes like this: in 1993, some trees in the park were destroyed by a storm. But instead of taking them away, Mr. Tingle carved them into various fairytale-like creatures and made the trees live forever.

If you wanna get the most out of your visit, aim to arrive on the 7th of September when it hosts the famous Tinglewood Festival. You can look forward to a whittling contest, car show, tractor show, and plenty of delicious food.

Ave Maria Grotto, Cullman

If you’re into art and history, put Ave Maria Grotto on your travel bucket list. This 4-acre park is set on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman and it features 125 miniature replicas of religious structures from around the world, such as Montserrat, the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, or the Tower of Pisa.

Apart from being pretty, it’s a shrine of great symbolism. All created by a Benedictine monk Brother Joseph Zoettl, it shows what years of faith, craft, and dedication can result in. So come to take a minute to reflect and soak in the meditative atmosphere. Who knows what else you will find here.

Dismals Canyon

Beautiful canyons can also be found outside of Arizona, and one of them is set in Alabama. It’s home to an array of geological formations, such as sandstone cliffs, natural bridges, and waterfalls. On the other hand, the lush vegetation provides the perfect conditions for various plant and animal species, some of which are even endangered.

If you can, stay overnight, as Dismals Canyon is home to bioluminescent worms called “glowworms”. They require a specific habitat and only live in a few parts of the world. Take a guided night tour to learn more about these fascinating creatures and see them up close. Cabin rentals are available.

Neversink Pit, Fackler

Image via @peterkbrandon

Neversink is a breathtaking 162-foot open-air pit located in Jackson County. You can admire it from the edges, while experienced climbers can bring their gear and descent to the bottom of it.

The hike to the pit is short but rather strenuous – not recommended for kids. However, it shouldn’t take you more than 40 minutes plus you can be pretty sure there will be no one else around – perfect to disconnect and enjoy the solitude of nature.

Note that a permit is necessary but can be required online here. Also, there is very poor phone coverage. We recommend you come with someone for your safety.

Bamahenge, Elberta

Southern Alabama isn’t just about the sunny seashore and its beaches. Not far from Josephine, you will find something you probably wouldn’t expect in such a setting – an American Stonehenge.

The replica of the English Stonehenge was created by an artist Mark Cline and offers much more than “just” a circle of megaliths. There are also huge fiberglass dinosaurs and other quirky sculptures that transform Bamahenge into an unconventional art installation.

Following positive results in 2023, the cruise industry in the Caribbean has been seeing a resurgence in visitors in 2024. Close to 32 million travelers cruised in 2023, a seven percent increase over 2019, with more expected to travel in 2024.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)’s 2024 State of the Cruise Industry report, over 44% of those travelers were to the Caribbean. This number is more than double the 18.5% who sailed to the next-highest region, the Mediterranean.

The 12.9 million cruise travelers to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda in 2023 grew by one million visitors when comparing 2023 to 2019.

The Bahamas saw almost 40% higher than 2019 levels, while in Barbados, 2024 visitors are expected to exceed its 2023 numbers by almost 200,000. Curacao is also expected to deliver a 13% uptick in cruise travelers compared to 2023 totals.

Following a near 30% increase in 2023 compared with 2022, Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s tourism minister reaffirmed visitors at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach, that the country is setting a target of over 400,000 annual cruise visitors.

While there has been significant increases in multiple destinations in the region, there is room for growth in other island countries hoping to attract tourists.

One such city which has seen an increase of 22 percent over the January and February months compared to 2023 has been Cozumel. Cozumel recorded the arrival of 900,000 cruise passengers in this time frame with 75 ships docking in the initial 14 days of 2024.

Nearly 1 Million Cruise Passengers Arrived In Cozumel In Just 60 Days In 2024

The Port of Cozumel is the fourth most visited port in the world welcoming more than two million cruise passengers each year. The island in the Caribbean Sea welcomes cruise ships and passengers from around the world with all the major cruise lines stopping at the Punta Maya, Punta Langosta and SSA México shipping terminals on the island of Cozumel.

The once-secluded hideaway is one of Mexico’s most-visited locations in the Caribbean region. Home to clear turquoise waters, this relatively small island off the coast of Playa del Carmen is known for its pristine beaches and being a premier diving destination.

With countless activities on land and in the water, it is an island paradise in every sense of the term. The glistening tropical paradise is home to luxury resorts, Mayan history and modern amenities.

Compared to other regions in Mexico, Cozumel has a very low crime rate and is considered a very safe area to travel to.

The record flow of both domestic and foreign tourists during the ‘Spring Break’ and Easter seasons to Los Cabos further the popularity of the beach resort destination.

Along with reporting over 330,000 visitors during the month of March, an average rate of $564 per night was recorded for hotels. Luxury hotels in the region like Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas and Solaz, a Luxury Collection Resort were just a few of the handful of luxury properties whose higher rates skewed the overall average.

According to the Los Cabos Hotel Association, the destination had an average of 83% hotel occupancy in the month of March with peaks close to 90%. Broken down by region in terms of occupancy was as follows: Cabo San Lucas (83%), Corridor (86%) and San Jose del Cabo (78%).

Is Los Cabos Safe To Visit? Travel Advisory 2024

Due to the influx of tourists visiting Los Cabos and the crimes tend to increase during the holiday period, the general secretary of the government of Baja California Sur, Saúl González Núñez deployed additional security to the region. To help protect tourists and locals, 140 elements of the National Guard arrived during this busy tourist period.

The effort by the security institutions of the three levels of government highlighted travelers’ renewed confidence in the safety and hospitality in the region. The resurgence of visitors also highlighted the region’s economic recovery and being one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Mexico.

The idyllic beach destination with its bright sun, fresh breezes, the turquoise blue of the sea, vibrant nightlife and festivities continue to draw crowds and break records.

This mirrors a recent analysis carried out by TripAdvisor, in that Los Cabos (or Cabo) has ranked as the most expensive destination in Mexico in 2024.

On average, you can find flights starting at $447, which is still reasonable. But it’ll be a little bit more difficult to find hotels for less than $475 per night.

Throughout March 2024, the US government issued or updated multiple international travel advisories.

Some of them will tell Americans why they should or shouldn’t travel to specific areas in a given territory. Some others will advise you on what to do if you see yourself involved in risky situations and the rest will inform you about health-related concerns you should be aware of.

Without further ado, let’s review what the government has to say concerning traveling to these seven countries.

Peru: Update on the Spread of Dengue Fever

U.S. Embassy In Peru Issues Travel Warning Amid Dengue Fever Spread

On March 26, the US Embassy in Peru updated its health advice regarding a massive dengue outbreak in the country.

According to Peru’s CDC, 16,247 cases have been reported in La Libertad, 12,306 in Lima, 11,470 in Piura and 10,909 in Ica.

Four to 10 days after getting infected, patients will experience COVID-19-, influenza-, or even malaria-like symptoms. Authorities recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes and putting on repellent, as the vaccination is restricted to those who have already had the infection.

Brazil: Presidente Wilson Street Robberies

The US Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, urges Americans to exercise increased caution in the zones surrounding this agency, on Avenida Rio Branco near the Cinelândia metro stop, due to a rise in robberies and assaults.

If you become the victim of a crime, don’t hesitate to contact local police at 190. Meanwhile, avoid using your mobile devices on the street and if attacked, remain calm and don’t resist.

France: Security Alert System Elevated to the Highest Level

U.S. Embassy: France Raises Its Security Alert System To The Highest Level

Following the terrorist attack committed by the “Islamic State,” on March 22, in Russia, France elevated its “Vigipirate” security system to “Attack Emergency Level.”

High school students across the country have received threatening emails through an official Ministry of Education software.

The US government advises Americans to avoid tourist or crowded areas, or those where too many police officers are patrolling.

Ecuador: Update About the Current State of Emergency

On March 8, the US State Department updated its security alert regarding Ecuador’s national state of emergency.

According to the agency, visitors to Ecuador should “Reconsider Travel” to the north of Portete de Tarquí Avenue in Guayaquil, the south of Esmeraldas and the provinces of Sucumbíos, Manabí, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo due to crime.

And “Do not travel to” south of Portete de Tarquí Avenue in Guayaquil, Huaquillas, Arenillas, Quevedo, Quinsaloma, Pueblo Viejo, the Canton of Duran and Esmeraldas city because of crime.

Rwanda: Travel Advisory Update

Rwanda continues to be ranked at Level 1: “Exercise Normal Precautions,” meaning, the country is very safe to visit.

However, the US government has updated its travel advisory to say that visitors to the country should “Exercise Increased Caution” when at the Rwanda-Burundi border, and “Reconsider Travel” to the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of the Congo border, both, due to armed conflict.

Haiti: Travel Alert Over Increased Crime

Royal Caribbean Remains Cruising To Haiti Despite The U.S. Embassy Alert But Limits Excursions

Following a massive prison break, more than 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, is currently controlled by criminal forces.

Members of the government have run away to nearby countries leaving Haiti in the middle of unprecedented political chaos.

The US government urges Americans and official employees to leave the country at once.

Moldova: Travel Advisory

Although the country is ranked at Level 2: “Exercise Increased Caution,” which means the country is pretty safe, there’s now a region labeled Level 3: “Reconsider Travel.”

According to the US State Department, Americans should refrain from visiting Transnistria due to an internal conflict and its proximity to the Ukrainian border.

Those who still want to visit it will be subject to multiple police controls. Taking pictures of military venues or law enforcement officials will get you into legal trouble.

With more than 700 unique islands, each possessing distinctive unspoiled beaches, tropical forests, mouth-watering dishes and friendly people, Americans may be overwhelmed trying to figure out which one to head to this spring break.

We’ll help you decide. There’s a key element you should consider before booking your tickets: Safety.

The US State Department has released or updated its travel advisories for multiple Caribbean destinations. While most islands ranked at Level 1, some others ranked at Level 4. But, what does it mean for your safety?

Level 4: Do Not Travel This means the destination is going through a particularly destabilizing situation that makes it extremely dangerous to visit. Here, the US government has very limited to zero capacity to assist Americans in need.

Level 3: Reconsider Travel – These countries pose a serious threat to travelers’ safety. It can be related to terrorism, crime, natural disasters or similar. It’s recommended to travel with a safety plan ready.

Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution – A great number of countries fall under this category. Don’t hesitate to book your tickets, as this designation means you’ll be safe as long as you observe common-sense precautions.

Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions – These countries are extremely safe, but only a few lucky ones make it to this level.

Without further ado, these are the travel advisories you might want to keep in mind before booking your holidays in the Caribbean.

Haiti: Level 4 – Do Not Travel

The US government urges citizens to refrain from all travel to Haiti due to widespread crime, kidnapping, riots and insufficient health care infrastructure.

A few weeks ago, criminal groups managed to release thousands of criminals from Haitian prisons. As of today, the government hasn’t been able to take back control.

Instead of visiting, the US authorities are requesting Americans to depart Haiti as soon as they find any commercial flights available. The international airport is experiencing multiple closures.

Jamaica: Level 3 – Reconsider Travel

US authorities request tourists to “reconsider” traveling to Jamaica due to crime and insufficient medical services. Government workers are not allowed to visit a number of zones in Jamaica. This means authorities have limited capacity to assist you in case of need.

The US is mainly concerned about Jamaica’s homicide rate, violent crimes, sexual assaults, and armed robberies happening across the country and even at all-inclusive hotels.

In case of an emergency, you may not find adequate specialized care at public hospitals.

Trinidad and Tobago: Level 3 – Reconsider Travel

US travelers should “reconsider” traveling to Trinidad and Tobago due to a rise in crime. These islands are facing a spike in murders, robberies, sexual assaults and kidnappings.

US authorities may not be able to help you if you travel to Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. Also, exercise increased caution in Port of Spain due to unexpected shootings.

The Bahamas: Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution

When in town, travelers should “exercise increased caution” due to crime mostly related to gang-related violence. Other crimes like armed robberies and sexual assaults can also occur.

Be particularly cautious on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands.

Cuba: Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution

Visitors might face petty crime, armed robberies and homicide in Cuba.

But more than that, the island is experiencing a massive medicine, power, food and fuel shortage. In the past it only affected locals but nowadays it’s also impacting tourists.

Dominican Republic: Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution

Dominican Republic Secures 13 Nominations at the 2024 World Travel Awards

The US government considers that the current accessibility to firearms, drug trafficking and a fragile criminal system are fertile breeding ground for crime.

For these reasons, the country is seeing armed robbery, sexual assault and homicide. Contact local police at 911 if you need any help.

Turks and Caicos: Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution

Crime is present in Turks and Caicos but it’s mostly restricted to Providenciales island.

Authorities are also concerned about the country’s limited capacity to investigate crimes and provide people with good medical services.

Whether a country is safe or not is a common question when choosing your next travel destination. And while the majority of the Caribbean islands have relatively low crime levels, some are safer than others.

We took into consideration the latest U.S. State Department travel advisories and found the 7 safest Caribbean islands to visit right now. All of them have a Level 1 safety rating, which means there is very little crime. So you can spend your vacation with peace of mind. Here they are.

Saint Lucia

Is St. Lucia Safe? Travel Advisory 2023

Set in the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, Saint Lucia is bursting with pristine beaches, unique volcanic landscapes, and outstanding resorts. It’s often considered the most romantic island in the Caribbean, as well as one of the safest.

What’s more, the people of Saint Lucia are known to be very friendly, so don’t be shy to ask for help if you get lost. Who wouldn’t want to spend their honeymoon in good company and worry-free?

Grenada

Grenada To Drop ALL Entry Restrictions for International Travelers On April 4

Nicknamed the “Spice Isle” for the production of spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, Grenada is another dreamy destination in the Caribbean with very low crime.

It might not be as popular as other destinations in the area but has been lately under the radar of many travelers seeking authentic experiences and fewer crowds. If you’re looking for unspoiled nature and a laid-back, low-key atmosphere, then Grenada is the right place for you.

Barbados

Bottom Bay, Barbados

With its white sandy beaches, an array of activities to engage in, and top-notch resorts, Barbados is one of the most visited islands in the Caribbean. It’s a perfect option for any type of traveler or a family vacation, and it’s generally very safe likewise.

Relax at the beach, explore the vibrant underwater world, take a guided tour of Mount Gay Rum Distillery, or indulge your taste buds in award-winning restaurants. Just watch out for your belongings at the touristy spots, there might be pickpockets just like in any other busy areas.

Aruba

Aruba is another renowned Caribbean destination. And for a good reason. It’s home to the world’s most beautiful beaches, outstanding windsurfing, kiteboarding, and sailing opportunities, and a vibrant nightlife scene. And, of course, the iconic Flamingo Beach.

Locals are very welcoming and most of them speak English. They like their visitors and always try to make them feel safe. That’s why police are present in most major touristy areas. So when your vacation ends, you can leave Aruba with lifetime memories and any negative experiences.

Montserrat

For the cliffy shoreline that resembles coastal Ireland and its historical ties to it, it’s pretty clear why Montserrat is often called the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. It offers fantastic hiking trails, stunning volcanic landscapes, and excellent diving opportunities, which makes it suitable for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

As you might have already guessed, it’s often ranked as one of the safest islands in the Caribbean. Criminal incidents are rare here and even though the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted in 1995, the volcanic activity has been minimal since. So you don’t have to be afraid of a natural disaster either.

Dominica

This tiny island was kept secret for a long time. But its treasures, including lush mountains, colorful coral reefs, and waterfalls, are quickly growing in popularity now.

Referred to as the Nature Island, it lives up to its name by offering visitors sustainable tourism practices. Even the most popular spots never get too crowded. And it‘s probably thanks to the remote atmosphere that it’s also very safe.

St. Barts

This list wouldn’t be complete without Saint Barthélemy, or St. Barts in short. It’s known for its upscale ambiance and high-end resorts, hence it’s very safe. Based on the information from 2023, it boasts a zero percent murder rate.

Enjoy some yachting, gourmet dining, and spa treatments, with picturesque beaches as a backdrop. If sophistication is your idea of the perfect vacation, St. Barts will provide you with an unforgettable Caribbean getaway.
