Massachusetts is an excellent state to visit thanks to its prime location on the East Coast and its rich history, culture, and natural beauty. However, there is much more to the Freedom Trail in Boston or the beaches of Cape Cod (although those destinations are well worth a stop).

We get you, not everybody likes to go with the flow. So if you’re like us and prefer discovering the off-the-beaten-path locations, we have prepared a list of a few undiscovered attractions we think you’ll fall in love with. Here are the 7 incredible hidden gems in Massachusetts to visit in 2024.

Cranberry Bog

You’ve surely picked an apple or two, and maybe even a pumpkin. But did you know cranberry picking was a thing, too? Cranberries are a vital part of Massachusetts’ heritage and many farms offer tours where visitors can learn about the history and production of this iconic fruit.

If you come during the harvest season, which is in autumn, your eyes will get dazzled with a feast of vibrant red colors. Take some home and have them and surprise your guests during Thanksgiving. Just imagine your family munching on cranberry sauce you made from scratch. Yummy!

Here are our favorite cranberry farms that provide field tours:

Santarella Gingerbread House, Tyringham

Source: Pinterest

Are you an artist looking for inspiration or do you just want to get a bit more creative at work? How about fulfilling your artistic endeavors at Santarella, also known as the Gingerbread House – a privately-owned property that once served as an art studio to Sir Henry Hudson Kitson?

The most prominent part of the Gingerbread House is the roof. This 80-ton, asphalt-shingled beauty looks exactly like from a fairytale book. And around it, you will find enchanting gardens.

You can either stay there overnight or drop by for an afternoon in idyllic surroundings. Don’t forget to check the website for seasonal events. They’re fun!

Natural Bridge State Park

Massachusetts also boasts many natural wonders. And Natural Bridge State Park is one of those hidden gems even locals don’t know about. It’s set in North Adams and its name comes from its main attraction – the natural white marble arch, the only one of its kind in North America.

Even though it doesn’t get much attention, it offers well-maintained trails that pass rushing streams, unique rock formations, and waterfalls. If you want to recharge batteries amidst the beauty, there are some picnic tables. Dogs are allowed, so you can take your furry friend with you.

Half Moon Beach

Source: Instagram @twin_teddy

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach escape, this place is for you. Half Moon Beach is set at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester. It’s tucked away between rocks and trees, and often overseen by larger crowds. It’s perfect to cool down on a hot summer day or to just enjoy a bit of serenity in nature.

Do you like the good old barbie? Grills are allowed in the park, so after you’ve unwinded enough, you can have a little picnic. There is a small entry fee, but compared to other beaches in the state, it’s pretty cheap.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

No matter whether you’re a museum aficionado or not, this Venetian-style palace in Boston will surely impress you. It features a private collection of its founder, Isabella Stewart Gardner, full of European, Asian, and American art from various periods. In the center of it all, there is a beautiful courtyard garden where you can contemplate blooming flowers, sculptures, and columns.

Apart from the regular exhibit, the museum also offers a range of cultural events, from lectures and workshops to performances. And yes, it looks as if you traveled back in time, ideal to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Beach Of Brant Point Light, Nantucket

No trip to Massachusetts would be complete without seeing at least one of its lighthouses. At Brant Point Light, you can get two birds killed with one stone – glimpse a picturesque lighthouse, and enjoy some beach activities.

Savor the tranquility of the coastline, watch local fishermen and sailboats, or take a little walk around. Also, the beach is wide enough to not feel cramped, its waters are calm, and therefore suitable for families with small children. If you’re staying in Nantucket, get up early one day and catch the sunrise by the lighthouse. The atmosphere is truly magical.

Mid-Century Glass Octagon Chalet in Otis

Source: Airbnb.com

Do you like to vacation in unique hotel rooms and Airbnbs? We have something for you on this list, too. In the midst of the breathtaking Berkshires, we’ve found an octagon-shaped chalet with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, perfect for a romantic getaway or a weekend in nature.

Cozy up at the modern fireplace and enjoy the amazing views. At the back, you’ll find a large deck with a grill and outdoor seating, ideal for summer BBQ. At night, you will have a chance to observe the star-lit sky. The area is known to be pretty light pollution-free.

The listing also makes a great base for discovering Otis and all it has to offer. Head to Otis Reservoir for boating, fishing, and paddleboarding. On the other hand, Tolland State Forest and Otis State Forest are full of opportunities for hiking and mountain biking.

Wondering where to head to on your summer holidays this year? Put these places picked by Conde Nast Traveler’s underrated destinations world’s ranking at the top of your list!

Summer is about to start and, if you choose the right destination, your days will be filled with pristine beaches, national parks, bonfires, the cool breeze of stunning lakes, tasty food, and outdoor adventures.

This time around, we bring you some of the most amazing underrated hotspots in the United States you must consider if you want to go off the beaten path.

Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina Island is a hidden gem in plain sight. With sun-drenched beaches surrounded by blue waters, Catalina is the place to go if you want to indulge in water sports or try fresh seafood and local craft beers.

Hollywood has chosen this destination multiple times to film popular movies. Yes, it’s that beautiful! This island is meant to be explored by foot or bike, which adds excitement to your vacation days.

When in town, don’t miss the chance to visit El Rancho Escondido to meet astonishing Arabian horses and an extensive vineyard.

Visiting this island is possible by a one-hour ferry ride from Long Beach, Dana Point, San Pedro, or Newport Beach to Avalon.

San Juan Islands, Washington

This collection of 400 award-winning Washington islands are perfect for a laid-back summer vacation filled with nature and joy.

The three most visited islands include Orcas, San Juan, and Lopez. All of them are accessible by ferry.

Travelers from across the country flock to these islands to engage in whale watching and wildlife tours, as well as kayaking, hiking, and swimming.

July and August are the busiest months in the Islands, so booking your accommodation over the next few days is probably the best idea.

Finger Lakes, New York

Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes is a region blessed with 11 stunning glacial lakes, majestic waterfalls, and multiple charming small towns. Its location makes it perfect for a weekend getaway with family and friends.

This area is full of recreational options, including water sports catering to adventure lovers. With perfect temperatures of around 80, Finger Lakes are ideal for engaging in hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming.

Hot air balloon rides and rafting in Letchworth State Park are other great outdoor activities you can take part in here.

Many travelers dream of a summer escape to these lakes so make sure to book your accommodations as soon as possible.

Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park

Unlike other popular natural parks in the United States, Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park is not overrun with tourists yet. Visitors to this natural wonder can enjoy activities such as boating, paddling, swimming, as well as hiking and trekking.

If you are into stargazing, this place boasts an International Dark Sky Park certificate due to its unique characteristics that make it ideal for taking in the night sky. You can even spot the Northern Lights but that’s between November and April.

This park is conveniently located at a five-hour drive north of Minneapolis-St. Paul, three hours north of Duluth, or four hours south of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Flying into Falls International Airport is another way to make it there.

Crystal River, Florida

Image Credit: Manatee mother and calf, Gregory Sweeney

Many travelers are drawn to this city for the exciting possibility of interacting with wildlife animals such as manatees in their natural habitat. This activity is illegal in most of the United States but not here.

If you plan to swim with manatees, it’s a good idea to hire a tour company because they know where you can spot them. These companies also provide you with special gear so you can have a memorable experience.

One of the most recommended tourist highlights is the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, where visitors can learn about different species while being surrounded by stunning unspoiled nature.

You can also visit Three Sisters Springs, a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Isle Royale is a ‘hidden gem’ National Park in the United States, not for lack of beauty but because making it there is an adventure by itself.

Take a five-hour boat ride from the Upper Peninsula to discover this secluded national park. Its location makes it ideal for visitors to discover lush forests and wild animals.

Visit Lake Superior over the summer months because it may be too cold the rest of the year.

This park mostly caters to families and people with a sense of adventure. So spare some vacation days to visit Isle Royal and don’t forget to pack your hiking boots and binoculars to admire wildlife.

While Alabama might not be known as a vacation destination like Florida or California, it boasts fantastic attractions that will make your stay a blast. However, you don’t have to stick around the most popular tourist spots. How about you visit something unique no other state offers?

On this list, you will find the 7 incredible hidden gems in Alabama to visit in 2024 that will make your friends and family want to vacation in the Cotton State too. Here they are.

Alabama’s Natural Bridge, Haleyville

Natural Bridge in Winston County is another hidden natural wonder of Alabama. It’s 148 feet long and towers up to 60 feet, which makes it the largest natural bridge east of the Rockies.

To get there, you have to hike a 2-mile-long trail. But don’t worry, the terrain isn’t difficult. After you come back, you can buy souvenirs at a tiny gift shop and refuel at a picnic area. The site is open all year round and there is a small admission fee – so come prepared, you might need cash.

Rattlesnake Saloon, Tuscumbia

Source: Lee Stevenson (Google Maps)

Are you a fan of Western movies? In that case, you simply must visit Rattlesnake Saloon in northwest Alabama. This unique restaurant features old-timey saloon decor, fantastic dishes, horseback rides, and live music.

However, it’s not just the Western theme that makes this place so special. It’s nestled inside a natural cave, which will take your dining experience to a completely different level.

Tinglewood Carvings, Montevallo

With its Tinglewood Carvings, Orr Park is yet another nature preserve that has been kept secret for years. And you now have a chance to discover it. But why Orr in particular? The story goes like this: in 1993, some trees in the park were destroyed by a storm. But instead of taking them away, Mr. Tingle carved them into various fairytale-like creatures and made the trees live forever.

If you wanna get the most out of your visit, aim to arrive on the 7th of September when it hosts the famous Tinglewood Festival. You can look forward to a whittling contest, car show, tractor show, and plenty of delicious food.

Ave Maria Grotto, Cullman

If you’re into art and history, put Ave Maria Grotto on your travel bucket list. This 4-acre park is set on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman and it features 125 miniature replicas of religious structures from around the world, such as Montserrat, the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, or the Tower of Pisa.

Apart from being pretty, it’s a shrine of great symbolism. All created by a Benedictine monk Brother Joseph Zoettl, it shows what years of faith, craft, and dedication can result in. So come to take a minute to reflect and soak in the meditative atmosphere. Who knows what else you will find here.

Dismals Canyon

Beautiful canyons can also be found outside of Arizona, and one of them is set in Alabama. It’s home to an array of geological formations, such as sandstone cliffs, natural bridges, and waterfalls. On the other hand, the lush vegetation provides the perfect conditions for various plant and animal species, some of which are even endangered.

If you can, stay overnight, as Dismals Canyon is home to bioluminescent worms called “glowworms”. They require a specific habitat and only live in a few parts of the world. Take a guided night tour to learn more about these fascinating creatures and see them up close. Cabin rentals are available.

Neversink Pit, Fackler

Image via @peterkbrandon

Neversink is a breathtaking 162-foot open-air pit located in Jackson County. You can admire it from the edges, while experienced climbers can bring their gear and descent to the bottom of it.

The hike to the pit is short but rather strenuous – not recommended for kids. However, it shouldn’t take you more than 40 minutes plus you can be pretty sure there will be no one else around – perfect to disconnect and enjoy the solitude of nature.

Note that a permit is necessary but can be required online here. Also, there is very poor phone coverage. We recommend you come with someone for your safety.

Bamahenge, Elberta

Southern Alabama isn’t just about the sunny seashore and its beaches. Not far from Josephine, you will find something you probably wouldn’t expect in such a setting – an American Stonehenge.

The replica of the English Stonehenge was created by an artist Mark Cline and offers much more than “just” a circle of megaliths. There are also huge fiberglass dinosaurs and other quirky sculptures that transform Bamahenge into an unconventional art installation.

Full of natural wonders, vibrant cities, and pristine beaches, there is always a good reason to visit Georgia. But how about you enjoy it without the excessive crowds this holiday season?

You don’t have to look further to find some undiscovered destinations. We have compiled a list of 7 incredible hidden gems in Georgia to visit in 2024 so you can jump straight into the car and set off for an amazing trip.

Hindu Temple, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Lilburn

You don’t have to travel far to experience the peace and tranquility of a Hindu temple. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is the largest one of its kind outside of India and it’s located in Georgia, in the suburbs of Atlanta.

Apart from the spiritual atmosphere, it boasts unique architecture, beautifully crafted ornate carvings, and sculptures. Outside, there is a serene garden, perfect for meditation. You can participate in a prayer ceremony at 11.15 am daily. The temple also provides guided tours for groups or audio guides for individuals.

Cumberland Island National Seashore

The shore of Georgia boasts plenty of beautiful barrier islands. Cumberland Island National Seashore is the southernmost one as well as the largest one, and simply can’t be missed on any travel bucket list.

It offers 17 miles of tranquil sandy beaches and an opportunity to see wild horses roaming them freely, armadillos, various butterflies, and birds. You can explore it on a bike or through hiking trails. Both provide a different experience.

One day should be enough to see the main points of interest. But if you feel like prolonging your visit, you can stay in one of the island’s campgrounds or the more luxurious Greyfield Inn.

Stone Mountain Park

Atlanta is a lively metropolis. But did you know there are 3200 acres of natural beauty right outside in the suburbs of it? Immerse yourself in the picturesque landscape, fish, kayak, and paddle board on the lake, or hike to the summit of the granite Stone Mountain for 360-degree views of the city. You can also get there by high-speed cable car.

There are also plenty of family-friendly attractions. Walk in the treetops at SkyHike, go back to the pre-historic times at Dinosaur Explore, or enjoy a short 4D movie. So take your kids and head to Stone Mountain Park. We guarantee you it will satisfy even the most demanding members.

Ghost Town beneath Lake Thurmond

Set along the border with South Carolina, Lake Thurmond, also known as Clarks Hill Lake, is a fantastic place for summer recreation, especially if you’re into fishing. However, there is much more to that at Lake Thurmond. Under its surface, you will find a submerged town.

Petersburg was once a thriving frontier market town but was flooded to create the reservoir. On drier days, you can glimpse the remains from the shore. You can also get closer to them on a boat. Diving isn’t recommended as the lake is often murky and has some water traffic.

Chateau Elan Winery and Resort

We also have something for those who like to spend their holiday relaxing and indulging themselves with top-notch amenities. And there is no better way to do so than staying in a luxurious hotel, such as Chateau Elan Winery and Resort.

It’s located in the heart of Georgia’s wine country, not far from Atlanta. It offers a fantastic spa with massages and body wraps, exquisite dining options, and golf courses. You can stay in a comfortable room, suite, or a villa. And you can even book the whole thing for yourself for a special occasion, such as a big birthday or a wedding.

Atlanta Botanical Garden

There are more hidden gems in Atlanta. Adjacent to the popular Piedmont Park, you will find the Atlanta Botanical Garden. It’s renowned for unique plant collections, such as roses and orchids, charming displays, exhibits, and various seasonal family-friendly activities.

Reserve at least two hours to get the full experience. And if you get hungry, you can grab a bite at Longleaf. This two-level contemporary glass restaurant offers fantastic food, fascinating views of the garden, and a terrace – perfect for relaxing among the trees and basking in the sun with a drink on a nice day out.

New Manchester Mill Ruins

We will stay with the ruins for a bit longer. Nestled deep inside the Sweetwater Creek State Park, there are ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company. It was built in 1849 and served for clothing production but was destroyed during the Civil War.

It’s set on the Red Trail; getting there can be challenging but manageable. Even though you can visit the site on your own, guided tours are available for about 10$ per person. That way, you can learn a bit more about the area’s history if interested plus you won’t get lost.

With its diverse natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine, and renowned southern hospitality, Louisiana is a popular vacation destination. But if you’re a traveler like us, you will also want to visit some attractions off the beaten path for sure.

How do you choose the best ones, you ask? As usual, we’re one step ahead and have already tested the waters, quite literally in some cases. On this list, you will find the 7 incredible hidden gems in Louisiana to visit in 2024 that we have hand-picked for you.

Recommended: 7 Incredible Hidden Gems In Alabama

Fort Proctor

Set on a small island in Lake Borgne, Fort Proctor is an abandoned Civil War fortress. It was built to protect New Orleans and the Mississippi River Delta from potential naval threats. Although it was never actually used as planned, it played an important role in Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage. Its unusual location in the serene wetlands also makes for great photos.

To get there, you need to launch a boat from Campo’s Marina in Shell Beach – an inflatable kayak will do as it’s not far from the shore. Another option is to take a guided tour.

Abandoned Jazzland in New Orleans

Six Flags was a thrilling theme park that catered to families with children and seekers of fun in general. Sadly, it closed with Hurricane Katrina and was never renovated as it was judged to be too expensive.

But don’t hang your head. It can still be enjoyed today for an exciting urbex exploration. You will come across muddy clowns, fallen mermaids, and broken Mardi Gras figures. The park is also often visited by alligators which creates a fascinating contrast.

Note that entering the park can be quite dangerous and is prohibited. But you can observe it pretty well from the outside and snap some captivating photos.

Gator Country LA Alligator Park

Thanks to the abundance of swamps, bayous, rivers, and marshes, Louisiana is known to be home to a large population of alligators. Gator Country LA Alligator Park provides a unique opportunity to learn about these animals and see them safely from up close.

Watch a feeding show, hold baby gators, snakes, and dragons, or take a swamp tour. A part of the park is also a petting zoo, which will please small children in particular. All that is under $20 per person.

No visit to New Orleans would be complete without a stop at Carousel Bar & Lounge. This famous bar is a part of the Hotel Monteleone and revolves like a merry-go-round. Thanks to that, it made it to the list of TOP 20 bars in the world by Vogue Living.

Take a ride on the carousel while sipping the Vieux Carré – the bar’s signature cocktail. You can also complement your drink with a delicious appetizer and enjoy some live entertainment as a backdrop, usually in the form of jazz or piano serenades.

Lafayette Cemetery

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 is yet another hidden gem of New Orleans. It’s one of the oldest city-governed cemeteries and features many beautiful tombs, statues, and mausoleums. It appeared in many movies, such as Interview with a Vampire or Double Jeopardy, and also served as an inspiration to many literary works.

Retreat yourself from the hustle and bustle of the city and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. There are also many guided tours available that will make your experience even better with some fascinating stories and anecdotes.

Louisiana Swamps & Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

Louisiana boasts incredible wildlife and a unique way to explore it is through its spread water system. You can do so on a canoe, kayak, or paddle board, which has been gaining popularity, especially in the Fall season.

So, which swamps are the best to paddle your way through the natural beauty of Louisiana? Bayou Segnette State Park is definitely our choice number one. It’s located in New Orleans, which makes it easily accessible. Apart from regular paddle boarding, you can also try SUP fishing and stay in one of its floating cabins there.

Other great options include Atchafalaya Basin, Barataria Preserve Trails, or Lake Martin. In all of them, you can spot various bird species, alligators, and other native animals and plants.

Mardi Gras World

If you’re in or around New Orleans, you definitely shouldn’t miss a visit to this exceptional museum. As the venue says – it’s a place where every day is Mardi Gras – so you can enjoy the beloved southern festivities even though they just ended.

Mardi Gras World offers an insight into the history and traditions of the parade, a collection of traditional floats, costumes, and other props, and you can also try some masks and costumes on. The best part? It’s conveniently located in downtown New Orleans and the museum even offers complimentary shuttle service from the French Quarter.

Known for its astonishing beaches, lush landscapes, and cultural heritage, the Dominican Republic is the ideal destination for any passionate traveler. There is so much to see that it’s hard to choose, but sticking only to the most popular spots would be a pity.

We like to go above and beyond to find the most unique places, so you don’t have to. Here is a list of the 7 most underrated places in the Dominican Republic to visit in 2024.

Bahia de las Aguilas

Bahia de las Aguilas is probably one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic. Yet, it’s often overlooked, and therefore perfect if you’re after unspoiled natural beauty.

As a part of Jaragua National Park, it boasts a lush mangrove forest, where you can observe iguanas, various bird species, and rich marina life. For that, it’s also a fantastic option for snorkeling or diving. All that without hassle, away from the crowds.

Can’t get enough of the tranquility of Bahia de las Aguilas? You can spend a night under the stars glamping at the nearby La Cueva.

Playa Grande

Set on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Playa Grande is an amazing option to soak in the sun and enjoy surfing. Thanks to consistent waves, it’s suitable for all levels, from pros to complete newbies.

Even though Playa Grande is off the beaten path, all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay are there, including parking, bathrooms, and showers. There is also a place to grab a bite. How about their signature rice, beans, or freshly caught fried fish with a chilled drink?

Peravia

Peravia is a province nestled in the southern region of the country, not far from Santo Domingo. It offers fantastic beaches, and scenic landscapes, as well as plenty of activities to engage in.

One of the hidden treasures of Peravia is Baní, its capital. If you come in June, you can experience the legendary mango festival, which will allow you to taste the best varieties of this fruit. Also, in less than 30 minutes, you can reach some great beaches, such as Playa Salinas, or the iconic Baní sand dunes.

El Seibo

If you prefer the mountains over the beach, El Seibo is a must-see. This province located in the west of the Dominican Republic is blessed with stunning landscapes and a great way to discover them is by hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding.

It’s also home to natural spas, waterfalls, and beautiful national parks, such as Los Haitises or Cotubanamá National Park. Love chocolate? Don’t forget to visit a local cocoa plantation. To get out the most of your visit, we recommend you take a guided day tour.

Neiba

Even though it’s not much talked about, Neiba is a cute little town with plenty to offer visitors. It’s located near Lake Enriquillo, home to diverse wildlife, such as American crocodiles, flamingos, and iguanas. You might spot them from the shore or take a boat tour to learn more. Surrounded by hilly terrain, it’s also perfect for hikes.

Wine lovers, alert! Neiba is the leading wine production region, and it hosts the Neiba Grape Fair – the only event of its kind in the Dominican Republic. Put it on your itinerary, it’s in August.

Isla Saona

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway where you can truly disconnect, Isla Saona is the right place for you. This beautiful beach oasis is known for postcard pictures, gorgeous water, and laid-back vibes.

It’s easily accessible from Punta Cana. The whole journey including a scenic boat ride takes about an hour and a half. Costa Rica has been gaining more and more popularity in recent years, especially among those searching for thrilling activities and a laid-back atmosphere at the beach.

Travel guides are full of destinations to go hiking, surfing, and experiencing the famed Pura Vida. Yet, some amazing spots get overlooked and await you to discover.

Read on to find the 7 most underrated places in Costa Rica to visit in 2024. Not only will you get a chance to immerse yourself in the authentic Costa Rican lifestyle but will also avoid crowds and promote sustainable tourism.

Poas Volcano

Poas Volcano is another tremendous destination for nature lovers that doesn’t get much attention but has a lot to offer. It’s one of the most active volcanos in Costa Rica and gives visitors a chance to see various volcanic phenomena up close, including steam vents, fumaroles, and bubbling sulfuric acid lakes.

It provides several hiking trails that lead to viewpoints overlooking the crater through the cloud forest – an amazing way to explore the area’s unique flora and fauna. On top of that, it’s easily reachable from San José. So even if you’re staying in the capital city, you can set off for a stunning day trip.

Zarcero

Zarcero is a picturesque mountain town in Alajuela that provides a blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. It’s home to an 1895 Church of San Rafael, which is a feast for the eyes both from the outside and inside. In front of it, you will find fascinating topiary gardens with trees beautifully trimmed into shapes of animals and various geometric figures.

Another thing Zarcero is known for is artisanal cheese. You can buy the iconic queso palmito in shops around the town’s cobblestone streets. Or you can take a tour and taste it right on a local dairy farm or a cheese factory.

Playa Mina

Looking to spend a day on a secluded beach only locals know about? Playa Mina, also known as Playa Zapotillal, boasts soft sand, clear water, and an abundance of wildlife – sea turtles in particular. It’s set in Guanacaste Province, about 30 minutes away from Tamarindo.

Getting there isn’t as easy as it sounds, though. You have to take an unmarked rocky road that requires an off-road-friendly car. Maybe that’s why it’s such an undervalued place in Costa Rica.

Visiting Playa Mina is a good idea all year round. But if you want to glimpse sea turtles hatching and slouching toward the ocean, the best time to come is between October and March.

Sarchí

When in Alajuela, you might as well visit Sarchí. This cute little town is famous for its traditional Costa Rican handicrafts. It encompasses about 200 artisan stores and markets, where you can find anything from wooden furniture and leather goods to ceramics and textiles. If you’re traveling with a large luggage, they make up for great souvenirs.

What’s more, it features enchanting colonial architecture. In the center of the town, you will find plenty of vibrant buildings and a beautiful church decorated with stunning woodwork. And also, the biggest oxcart in the world. Used for transporting coffee beans in the past, the colorfully painted oxcarts are a symbol of Costa Rica.

Mal Pais

Located at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Mal Pais is a tiny fishing village with incredible nature and a mesmerizing coastline, which is ideal for surfing. Thanks to consistent surf breaks, it’s suitable for all levels. And the tranquility of the area attracts surfers from around the world.

Suppose that’s not enough of an adventure for you. In that case, you can zip-line the jungle canopy, go horseback riding, or hike the nearby Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve or Montezuma Waterfalls.

Rincon de la Vieja

Rincon de la Vieja

Those visiting Costa Rica to explore its diverse nature shouldn’t miss Rincon de la Vieja. This national park is nestled in northwestern Costa Rica, it spreads over 14,000 hectares and is home to fantastic hiking trails, waterfalls, mud pots, geysers, hot springs, and the massive Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.

It’s also a perfect place to get your adrenaline pumping. You can zip-line through the jungle canopy, rappel down some waterfalls, or enjoy whitewater rafting on the Rio Colorado. After that, you can refuel and savor authentic dishes of the region in one of the local restaurants.

Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island

If you’re looking to spend a fun day at the beach, head to Tortuga Island. This hidden gem is located in the Gulf of Nicoya and is a popular spot for a day expedition to enjoy all the delights a beach can provide.

Getting to Tortuga Island already involves a scenic boat ride. Relax on the deck, soak in the sun, and watch the mountainous landscape from a distance. Once you get to the island, you can engage in plenty of watersports, from kayaking and paddleboarding to jet skiing and banana rides. The waters are also full of marine life. Snorkel or dive and explore colorful fish, rays, and sea turtles.

If you prefer to stay on the ground, you can play volleyball, frisbee, or just laze around.

We all know that the Caribbean is a stunner. There are so many islands to visit and so much to do. But for that reason, many beautiful places are often overlooked.

At the same time, visiting a lesser-known destination is a fantastic way to get out of your tourist bubble and get to know local cultures. That’s why we compiled a list of the 7 most underrated places in the Caribbean to visit in 2024, so you could have the most authentic vacation this year possible.

Secret Bay, Dominica

If you’re looking for the ultimate escape and relaxation, there is no better option than the Secret Bay in Dominica.

This exclusive resort consists of rainforest villas and bungalows, each of which boasts its plunge pool and views of the Caribbean Sea. Apart from that, guests can enjoy a world-renowned, farm-to-table restaurant and wellness – including spa treatments, yoga sessions, and meditation classes.

Wanna enjoy a bit of nature? The resort has direct access to two secluded beaches. No crowds are guaranteed. Or you can take a guided tour of Dominica’s rainforest, hot springs, or marine reserve.

Maracas Beach, Trinidad and Tobago

Looking for a beach escape in a tranquil setting with idyllic views? Maracas Beach is popular among both locals and travelers alike and is a spectacular place to spend a chilled afternoon with family or friends swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. If the conditions allow, you can also surf.

Another thing this beach is famous for is “bake and shark” – a local dish that consists of shark meat and fried flatbread. You can get it from vendors or the huts along the coast. If you’ve never tried shark before, Maracas Beach will provide you with the best opportunity.

Pinel Island, Saint Martin

Pinel Island is a little oasis just off the coast of Saint Martin. It’s easily accessible by a shuttle boat from Cul-de-Sac. If you’re adventurous enough, you can get there on a paddle or a kayak.

It often gets overshadowed for its size. But even though it’s tiny, this paradise is fun for the entire family.

Its shallow waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There is an underwater trail that will uncover the best spots to meet various marine creatures. Pinel Island also offers several hiking trails and bars and restaurants to chill and refuel.

Altos de Chavón, Dominican Republic

If arts and architecture are your thing, you will fall in love with Altos de Chavón. This cute town is a replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village and is a cultural center for both residents and tourists.

Many artists reside there, from photographers to fashion designers. It’s also home to the renowned Altos de Chavón School of Design.

When walking around the cobblestone streets, you will come across plenty of art galleries, craft shops, and artisan workshops. Altos de Chavón also boasts stunning views of the Chavón River and its surroundings.

Dean’s Blue Hole, Bahamas

Dean’s Blue Hole is another distinctive stretch of shoreline. It’s set in a bay west of Clarence Town in the Bahamas. It dips an impressive 663 feet, which makes it one of the deepest blue holes in the world.

It’s surrounded by a natural rock amphitheater which provides fantastic views of the hole and there is a beautiful white sand beach right next to it. If you dare, bring a snorkel and swim across. But note that it would be at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards.

What’s more, it hosts the Vertical Blue Free Diving Competition every year, a spectacle avid divers shouldn’t miss.

Frenchman’s Cove, Jamaica

Frenchman’s Cove is another hidden treasure of the Caribbean. This picturesque beach has soft white sand, crystal clear water, and is shaded by a canopy of tropical trees. It’s ideal for swimming or just lazing around with a few drinks.

Frenchman’s Cove is a private beach, it’s a part of the Frenchman’s Cove Resort. You will need to pay 2000 Jamaican dollars to enter it but you can be sure the beach won’t be crowded. Bring cash, as they don’t take cards.

Mar Chiquita, Puerto Rico

Are you chasing after unique beaches to visit this year? Put Mar Chiquita on your travel bucket list. This oval-shaped cove creates a natural pool filled in with turquoise water that is well-protected from the lively waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

There is plenty of space to park and during weekends, you can even try the traditional Puerto Rican fritters from food trucks. However, be cautious when swimming. Even though the waters of Mar Chiquita are usually rather calm, there is a risk of serious undertows due to the tide.

Mexico is more than bougie beach resorts – it’s an extraordinary destination with unparalleled opportunities to enjoy art, culture, culinary marvels, and breathtaking natural scenery.

Adventurous travelers willing to journey off the beaten path will find unforgettable destinations throughout the expansive country. Las Pozas, a surrealist sculpture park nestled within the rainforest, is one of those places. Las Pozas is located in the region of Huasteca Potosina in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, known for its natural beauty. The hidden gem destination is ideal for art lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Visiting Las Pozas feels like wandering through a dream. Created by the renowned surrealist artist Edward James, it features massive concrete sculptures scattered amongst lush jungle gardens. In 2012, Las Pozas was named an Artistic Monument of the Nation, and it has since been regarded as the most important surrealist art exhibit in Mexico. The once-private compound opened to tourists in 1991, and you can explore the fanciful gardens, picturesque pools, waterfalls, and mind-bending architecture via a guided tour.

The making of a dreamscape

Edward James first arrived in Huasteca Potosina in the 1940s. By then, The British artist, millionaire, and poet was well-known as an eccentric patron of surrealist art. The beauty of the Sierra Madre jungle quickly captured his heart and imagination. He purchased around 100 acres to create Las Pozas, meaning “the pools,” where he would live and work for the next 40 years.

Las Pozas was initially created to house Edward James’s exotic pets, including birds, snakes, ocelots, and his orchid collection. When the orchids died, he began the construction of his marvelous sculptures, including colorful cement flowers that wouldn’t succumb so easily to frost as his beloved orchids had. The imaginative project expanded to include 30 buildings with mysterious names like “The Cinematographer,” ” The Staircase to Heaven,” and “The House on Three Floors Which Will in Fact Have Five or Four or Six.”

Over the years, more than 150 people contributed to the creation of the garden. Construction on the site continued until Edward James passed away in 1984. Since then, the jungle has encroached upon the sculptures, leaving the impression of a dreamy lost civilization.

Preparing for your trip

La Pozas is located about eight hours from Mexico City by car. There are plenty of accommodations in the nearby village of Xilitla, starting at about $50 per night. You can visit Las Pozas year-round. Reservations can be made online, and basic admission costs around $9 per adult.

Private tours with exclusive access are offered daily for groups of up to seven people for $140 to $190. Las Pozas is the perfect place to snap some incredible shots, and for about $360, photographers can book the garden for photoshoots. Access to sites off limits to the general public is available for an additional fee.
