Egypt is a place every traveler must visit at least once in a lifetime. But should you travel to this ancient country right now during the conflict in Israel and the recent Iran involvement?

In general, Egypt is a safe place to visit. You may encounter petty crime and scams, but that is the extent of crime in this country.

Is it safe to travel to Egypt during the Israel – Hamas – Iran conflict?

There haven’t been any particular alerts or warnings for traveling to Egypt after Iran attacked Israel. The distance between Iran and Egypt is 1,230 miles but Egypt shares a border with Israel. The Egyptian Government hasn’t shown any interest or actions supporting involvement in the conflict.

Official Travel Advisories:

U.S. Travel Advisory

The U.S. State Department hasn’t issued any particular warning for Egypt after the recent of Iran in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The latest update of the U.S. Travel Advisory for Egypt was issued on July 13, 2023.

Level 3: Reconsider Travel

The U.S. government has issued a travel warning recommending travelers “reconsider travel to Egypt due to terrorism.” According to the statement, visitors should “exercise increased caution in Egypt due to the Embassy’s limited ability to assist dual national U.S.-Egyptian citizens who are arrested or detained.”

The embassy does not recommend travel to:

  • “The Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) due to terrorism.
  • The Western Desert due to terrorism.
  • Egyptian border areas due to military zones.”

According to the advisory, terrorists may attack diplomatic buildings, tourist destinations, transit hubs, markets, and retail malls, western companies, restaurants, resorts, and local government buildings. Such attacks may occur with little or no notice.

UK Travel Advisory + MAP

Foreign Office warns against traveling to some parts of Egypt, issues Travel Advice MAP

The UK Foreign Office is not discouraging travel to popular Egyptian destinations like Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada, and Cairo. However, it does offer travel advice, urging travelers to avoid the following regions:

  • Areas within 20 km of the Egypt-Libya border
  • Northern Sinai
  • Northern part of South Sinai
  • Eastern part of Ismailiyah Governorate
  • Western Desert (additional information on their official webpage)
  • Hala’ib Triangle and Bir Tawil Trapezoid

LATEST UPDATES / NEWS from Egypt:

January 11 – Egypt is drafting legislation regarding foreign visitors

In order to discuss the preparation of draft laws pertaining to handling foreign tourists and regulating new tourism companies, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Eissa on Tuesday.

The minister stated that the two incentive packages that were suggested to incentivize the private sector to increase its investment in hotel room construction were approved by the Cabinet, putting the plan for 2024 into action.

November 12: Egypt Tourism Facing Cancellations Amid Israel-Hamas War

Egypt is currently facing a rise in trip cancellations from American tourists due to concerns related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Great Wonders of Egypt, a Cairo-based company specializing in cultural and adventure tourism, reported that more than half of its American travelers have canceled their November and December trips.

October 27: Missile strikes Egypt’s Taba resort town in the area “advised against travel”, 220 km (135 miles) from Gaza

The missile that hit Egypt’s resort town 220 km (135 miles) from Gaza wounded at least 6 people, according to a local source. The area of Taba has been listed as one of the “advise against all but essential travel” in the latest UK travel advisory.

Common scams to be aware of while in Egypt

Egypt is a fairly safe country to travel to if you are on your guard and observe local cultural customs. Although the crime rate in Egypt is low, beware of pickpockets and scammers.

However, if you are visiting tourist destinations, especially religious sites, consider the risk. Attacks on tourist sites do occur, but if you check local news sources about the threat situation, avoid large crowds, watch out for religious or public festivals that could trigger demonstrations or riots, and choose to travel in a small group.

1. Overpriced Items Scam

This scam is typical when visitors go shopping, and it usually occurs in village markets when the merchant simply raises the price to make more money, which is when you must bargain. Negotiating boldly will save you from overpaying and will also relieve strain on the next tourist.

2. Fake Cry Story Scam

The stories of fake weeping are limitless; you will frequently come across some impoverished individual crying for money because they have lost someone or someone in their family is ill. Whatever the story seems like, keep in mind that they are expert con artists, and you must not get carried away.

3. Beach Scams

Some beach scammers may steal your belongings as you swim in the Mediterranean or the Red Sea. They simply take your belongings and flee to a location you would never be able to get, therefore the best way to avoid this is to put your valuables in hotels if you don’t have somebody to look after your belongings while you enjoy your time in the sea.

4. Pick-pocketing

This has deep roots dating back to the dawn of time, and it only grows better with each passing year. This is a pretty prevalent type of scam that most tourists fall victim to. The simplest method to avoid this great scam is to leave all of your belongings and actual passport at the hotel and bring a photocopy with you.

5. Fake Tour Guides

This is another classic tourist scam in Egypt; you may frequently find persons outside any transportation platform promising to show you around. Whether you’re traveling alone or with companions, don’t put your trust in them because you might be asking a robber to tour you around. When booking a tour guide, go with the hotels because they are more real.

6. Fake Taxi Operators

Cab drivers offer cheap rides to famous tourist spots, but it’s a scam. You must see through the technique; no one will be overly friendly to over low-cost ride without the goal of stealing from you. Keep this in mind!

7. Fake Police

It’s difficult to tell the difference between the real and the fake, so observe their body language when they ask for your credentials. Although it is uncommon, this tourist scams do occur in Egypt. When you notice something odd, kindly ask them to back off and threaten to phone the local station.

8. Fake Cashiers and Bartenders

This can happen to anyone at any time and without warning. Even after paying, you will be told that you did not pay at the local taverns and cafes. When you pay with cash, they will also state that you did not pay the whole amount. This has the potential to go extremely far, and they may have accomplices. You must double-check before paying and choose to pay by card, but be cautious with your code.

Sargassum seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean has been invading the beaches and ruining holiday plans for many travelers in the last few years and it’s not getting and better in 2024.

We have compiled a list of Caribbean beaches that have historically not been affected by the seasonal bloom of sargassum to help you with your travel plans.

Current seaweed situation in the Caribbean in 2024

The 2024 seaweed season has been mild in the Caribbean so far. Most of the places that get invaded every year report less sargassum this season. The reason behind it is most likely the lower sea temperatures this time of the year than usual but that is currently changing and more seaweed arrival is expected.

Seaweed reporting, stay updated

If you still considering vacationing in the area with seaweed and would like to stay up to date with the sargassum situation in those areas, we recommend joining our reporting groups on Facebook:

Eagle, Palm, and Baby Beaches in Aruba

Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island, is known for its fine white sand beaches, opulent resorts, and refreshing breezes. Its well-known beaches, including Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Baby Beach, are fortunate to lie outside the hurricane belt and the sargassum seaweed belt.

Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay Beach, another of the most beautiful beaches in the world, offers crystal clear sea waters and incredibly soft sand. This long coastline is especially calm because it is protected by a barrier reef. At Grace Bay Beach, the water bottom is pristine and smooth.

If you are looking for a Caribbean beach without seaweed for a family, couple or group vacation, Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, is unquestionably a place to take into consideration.

Playa Porto Mari on Curacao, Dutch Caribbean

One of Curacao’s most stunning beaches is also one of the most beautiful algae-free beaches in the Caribbean. Playa Porto Mari, a private beach on Curacao’s west coast, charges an entrance fee (visit the Porto Mari website for hours and prices), but the cost also includes access to several amenities.

Morne Rouge Beach on Grenada

On the island of Grenada, there is a stunning, seaweed-free coastline with crystal-clear waters. Although it is less known than Grand Anse Beach and also known as BBC Beach, Morne Rouge is hardly affected by Sargassum algae.

Especially families enjoy swimming here because of the calm sea. If you are looking for a family-friendly Caribbean beach without seaweed, Morne Rouge is an excellent choice.

Grand Anse in St. Georges, Grenada

Sargassum seaweed has not yet invaded Grenada’s beautiful Grande Anse coast. Quite apart from its gorgeous beaches, Grenada is a popular Caribbean destination thanks to its artisanal rum farms, organic bean-to-bar chocolate, and mountains dotted with waterfalls.

Beaches on the Caribbean Side of Colombia

Best beaches in Colombia

The Caribbean coast of Colombia boasts some of the cleanest beaches, especially notable during the seaweed season, where such issues are minimal.

Beaches like Playa Blanca in Barú, the pristine sands of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, and the serene Isla de San Andrés are renowned for their clear waters and well-maintained shores.

These beach spots are ideal for travelers seeking tropical getaways without the common inconveniences of seaweed accumulation, offering perfect spots for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres Sees First Arrival Of Sargassum On its Most Popular Beach

If you really want to go to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, there are still some beaches there that do not have Sargassum algae. Sargassum tides are most likely to hit the exposed eastern coasts, but some beaches, like Playa Norte on the island of Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo, are usually free of seaweed. Much depends on the wind and ocean currents, however.

Secret Beach Belize

Belize is home to many beautiful beaches, but one that stands out from the rest is Secret Beach. As the name suggests, this beach is hidden away from the crowds and is a secluded spot that’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Also, seems this amazing place is a secret to Sargassum as you won’t find it there.

The Secret Beach is not only a perfect place to relax and unwind, but it’s also an ideal spot for water sports enthusiasts. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking are just a few of the activities you can enjoy on this beach.

Little Bay Beach, St. Maarten

Little Bay Beach is typically in pristine condition year-round.

This small island is divided between Dutch and French territories and has 37 beautiful beaches spread over its 34 square miles. Sargassum can occasionally be a problem, especially on the east coast.

Little Bay Beach on the south side of the island, just minutes from the capital city of Philipsburg, is an excellent choice if you are looking for a beach in St. Maarten without seaweed.

Due to its location on a secluded peninsula and the protection provided by rocky outcroppings on both sides, it is rarely affected by sargassum seaweed.

Southern Tip of Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

Although the opulent St. James Club on Antigua’s eastern windward side had to be closed for three months in 2019 because of an enormous surge of Sargassum seaweed, numerous other Antiguan beaches often have no sargassum seaweed.

Located on the southern tip of Antigua, Curtain Bluff Resort is situated on two beaches in a private setting where little seaweed arrives.

The 72-room boutique resort’s amenities include an all-inclusive gourmet restaurant, tennis, squash, sailing, guided snorkeling excursions, and sea kayaking.

Playa PortoMari, Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean

Renowned as a beloved summer getaway, Curacao entices travelers with its stunning beaches and remarkable amenities, and Playa PortoMari stands out among them.

This beach ranks high on the list of popular destinations in Curaçao, celebrated for its vibrant marine ecosystem, well-designed facilities, and captivating natural splendor. Divers are drawn to the awe-inspiring double reef, while snorkelers can trace trails that unveil an array of reef formations teeming with captivating oceanic creatures.

Bloody Bay and Long Bay Beaches in Negril, Jamaica

Hidden Gem of Negril boasts Bloody Bay and Long Bay which are havens of natural beauty, distinguished by its remarkable sargassum seaweed-free beaches.

They are idyllic escapes where beach lovers can revel in crystal-clear waters and powdery sands without the intrusion of the seaweed.

Other Caribbean beaches without sargassum all year round:

  • Bayahibe Beach, Dominican Republic
  • Crane Beach, Barbados
  • Trunk Bay, US Virgin Islands
  • Pigeon Point Beach, Tobago
  • Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda

There are plenty of untouched European destinations, but one country in the east has proven to be one of the hottest of the year: Albania

A country that used to be largely neglected by travelers, but has recently become one of the most promising destinations and real hidden gems of Europe.

Demand for travel to Europe increased between 2022, 2023 and 2024, especially after all health-related entry requirements were removed and normalcy was fully restored. But while tourism goliaths such as France, Italy and Spain have taken steps to reduce tourist numbers, other lesser-known countries are eager to welcome more visitors.

Albania is a small country in southeastern Europe, bordering Greece to the south, northern Macedonia and Kosovo to the east, and beautiful Montenegro to the north. But unlike many of its contemporaries, it was introduced to the public only 30 years ago.

Fastest Growing Tourism in Europe in 2023

According to Eurostat, Europe had 2.6 billion tourist stays in 2023 and compared to previous 2022 Albania had record breaking 55.6% growth.

Financial Outlook for Albania in 2024

Albania’s tourism outlook for 2024 is looking very positive. According to Statista.com, the expected revenue from tourism is US$75.49m with annual growth rate 4.56% in 2024 until 2028 resulting in revenue of US$90.23m by 2028.

Pandemic Helped Albania’s Tourism

The fact that Albania continues to expand so rapidly in the face of the return to normalcy of its fiercest competitors is further evidence that it has maintained the momentum it gained at the beginning of the pandemic.

While most of Europe was closed because of COVID, Albania remained accessible without restrictions, which probably contributed to its unexpected popularity.

Many tourists are unaware that Albania is a summer paradise

Albania: The Best Kept Secret For American Digital Nomads In 2023

Albania, like Croatia and Montenegro, is located on the Adriatic Sea, one of the arms of the great Mediterranean, but the cost of living is much lower in comparison. You will find the same turquoise waters, white sandy or pebble beaches, and medieval towns with stone houses, but without expensive hotels and typical tourist traps.

Large parts of the southernmost coast of Albania, known as the Albanian Riviera, have remained undeveloped so that nature is intact, the beaches are undisturbed, and the traditional cobblestone towns, where generations of families have lived for centuries, untainted by outside influences.

Theth

Theth National Park is a real hidden gem of Europe when it comes to hiking. Often referred to as Albanian Alps, this mountain range is a truly beautiful clenot of the country. With peaks from 1,200 meters to 2,567 meters, Mt Radohima is the the highest point.

Prices in Albania

Albania has become an increasingly popular destination for holidaymakers in recent years, offering a wide range of attractions and activities at affordable prices compared to other European destinations. The cost of a holiday in Albania will depend on several factors, including the time of year, type of accommodation, and the activities you plan to do.

Accommodation in Albania ranges from budget hostels and guesthouses to luxurious hotels and resorts. Prices can vary depending on the location and season, but generally, budget accommodation can be found for as low as €10-€20 per night, while more upscale options can range from €50-€200 per night.

Food and drink in Albania are also reasonably priced, with traditional Albanian dishes costing around €5-€10 in local restaurants. International cuisine options are available in larger cities, and prices may vary accordingly.

Transportation costs in Albania are relatively low. Taxis are widely available, and the fares are reasonable, with an average cost of €5-€10 for a short ride. Buses are also a popular and cheap way to travel around the country, with tickets ranging from €1-€5 depending on the distance.

More and more travelers are searching for off-the-beaten-track destinations, even when it comes to national parks. And we’re not surprised. First of all, they are often less busy, and you can immerse fully in the peaceful outdoor experience. Also, they tend to be more budget-friendly.

Are you one of those who prefer a remote setting? We have a tip for your next trip. The Olympic National Park in Washington is one of the lesser-known, yet the best ones to visit.

Why should you get hyped up about this park in particular? The answer is simple. With an area of more than a million acres, it’s home to mountain peaks, rainforests, and stunning sandy beaches, providing activities from which even the pickiest traveler will choose.

How to get there

The park is set on the Olympic Peninsula in the northwestern corner of Washington State and is easily reachable from various locations. It’s less than three hours of drive from Seattle, and about four hours from Portland, Oregon. You can also take a ferry from the Seattle area and even Canada.

Top activities at Olympic National Park

There is a plethora of things to see and do at Olympic National Park, with hiking being one of the most popular activities. In Hoh Rainforest, one of the largest temperate rainforests in the States, you will find the Hall of Mosses Trail. It’s not even one mile long but will take you through a fairy-like canopy of mosses and ferns.

Hall of Mosses

To enjoy some views, head to the Hurricane Hill Trail. It’s a pretty long hike, about 6 miles roundtrip, but the panoramic vistas from the top are amazing. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of Vancouver Island or San Juan Islands.

Another must-see attraction is the Marymere Falls. They are at their best in spring when melting snow from the mountains feeds them. A short hike through a virgin forest, log bridges, and lush streams will take you there.

Last but not least, Olympic National Park boasts some incredible beaches, such as Ruby Beach, Shi Shi Beach, and Rialto Beach. From Rialto Beach, you can hike to the iconic Hole-In-The-Wall and snap a dramatic pic of the iconic rock archway. Watersports enthusiasts can engage in paddling and boating at Lake Crescent.

Where to stay

Looking to sleep under the stars? There are plenty of campsites to choose from at Olympic National Park, both from secluded hike-in and boat-in sites to vehicle-friendly sites. You can also get a backcountry permit and camp at the beach. The whole list of campgrounds can be found here.

If you don’t want to rough it, don’t worry. Plenty of lodges and cabin rentals are also available in the park and the surroundings. Some of the most beloved options include Lake Crescent Lodge or Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort.

Best time to visit it

The Pacific Northwest is notoriously known for its rainfall. If you want to stay dry, summer is the season. The blooming of the meadows is at its peak and offers a truly magnificent scenery. The downside is that summer also brings the most tourists. On the other hand, in spring and fall, there will be fewer crowds, but be prepared for unpredictable weather.

In winter, the temperatures drop down and camping and other accommodation facilities might be closed, so we wouldn’t recommend it.

Due to the popularity of Cancun, Tulum, and other Riviera Maya attractions, Los Cabos had played only a minor role in the Mexican tourism industry for many years. Sun-seekers who had been south of the border in the past, who were utterly fascinated with the Caribbean Sea’s crystal clarity and expanding resort industry, passed the place by despite its enormous potential.

As time passed, however, the Riviera Maya started to lose some of its appeals due to mass tourism and continued price increases, while “The Capes,” which include both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, gained popularity as a much more laid-back alternative not yet overtaken by the masses.

As a result, it climbed up the rankings to become Mexico’s second most popular and fastest-growing seaside destination in 2022 and 2023, just behind Cancun.

From January to December 2022, 4.1 million passengers arrived at Los Cabos International, Baja California Sur’s main airport. That’s still far below Cancun’s total of 9.5 million, but this is when things get exciting.

Los Cabos in Mexico

Once again, it is evident that the 4.1 million mark is already 20% higher than the number registered in 2021. In terms of growth, the Capes are still on the rise. In other words, they have overtaken Cancun, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta as the Mexican destinations with the fastest growth.

In 2023, the number of tourists that arrived in Los Cabos was 4.5 million, which is a 12.50% increase compared to 2022. In Cancun, the number of tourist arrivals was 9.5 million in 2022 and 10.4 million in 2023, which is a 9.5% increase.

With a 32.6 percent increase in visitors during the Northern Hemisphere summer compared to the Caribbean hub’s far more modest 26.6 percent, Los Cabos was already showing signs that it was on track to surpass Cancun in terms of growth as of September 2022.

The abundance of opulent lodging options and distinctive experiences that Los Cabos has to offer-often combined with breathtaking natural beauty and close proximity to the beaches-helps to contribute to the city’s unique feeling. The twin cities, which have the “greatest presence” of healing resorts in the Americas, were recently crowned Mexico’s top wellness destination.

There’s no denying that Cabo has carved out a niche for itself in the high-end tourism industry, appealing to those who are not only willing to spend money on an all-inclusive vacation, but also expect some exclusivity and true relaxation. It may not be cheap, but there’s no denying that the high-quality service and relaxed atmosphere, as opposed to the chaotic party scene of the Riviera Maya, have helped the Capes.

How is the safety in Los Cabos?

Los Cabos is generally considered to be a safe destination for tourists. However, like any popular tourist destination, it is important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. The local government and tourist industry have implemented various safety measures to ensure the safety of visitors, such as increased police presence and security at popular tourist spots.

It is important to take precautions such as not leaving valuables unattended, using reputable transportation services, and avoiding walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. It is also recommended to stay informed about current safety issues by checking with your hotel or local authorities.

Overall, by taking common-sense precautions, visitors can enjoy a safe and enjoyable experience in Los Cabos.

The U.S. Department of State continually updates its travel advisories for more than 200 countries around the world based on a range of risk indicators, including health, terrorism, and civil instability. Level 1 travel advisories recommend taking ordinary precautions, while Level 4 advisories discourage travel.

These are the countries the U.S. State Department advises not to go to in 2024:

Haiti

Kidnappings, crime, and civil unrest are the greatest risk factors in Haiti, a country bordering the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Sea. Due to natural disasters, and economic and social instability, the country is experiencing chronic poverty.

In October 2022, the prime minister requested international security forces to crack down on gang violence, suggesting that the entire country is under threat. Travel advisories say U.S. citizens to leave Haiti immediately because of existing security, health, and infrastructure problems.

Some areas of Ecuador

The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory for Ecuador, updated on February 2, 2024, advises increased caution due to civil unrest, crime, and kidnapping. Specific areas with heightened risk include:

Do Not Travel areas:

  • Guayaquil, south of Portete de Tarquí Avenue
  • Cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in El Oro
  • Cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo in Los Rios
  • Canton of Duran in Guayas
  • Esmeraldas city and areas north in Esmeraldas province

Some areas of Jamaica

Is JAMAICA Safe? Travel Advisory 2024

The U.S. State Department issued a Level 3 travel advisory for Jamaica due to crime, advising travelers to reconsider travel.

The advisory highlights concerns about violent crimes like home invasions, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, even at all-inclusive resorts.

Specific areas prohibited for U.S. government personnel and advised against for travelers include parts of:

  • Kingston, St. Andrew
  • St. Catherine,
  • Clarendon,
  • St. James (Montego Bay),
  • Hanover,
  • Westmoreland,
  • St. Ann,
  • St. Elizabeth,
  • Manchester,
  • St. Thomas, and Trelawny.

Some areas of Mexico

The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory for Mexico, updated on August 22, 2023, highlights widespread violent crimes like homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery. Travel restrictions for U.S. government employees reflect the severity of risks in certain areas.

Do Not Travel to:

  • Colima
  • Guerrero
  • Michoacán
  • Sinaloa
  • Tamaulipas
  • Zacatecas

Myanmar (Formerly Burma)

The main reasons for avoiding travel to this Southeast Asian country are armed conflict and civil unrest triggered by a military coup in early 2021. Other risk factors include COVID-19 restrictions, limited medical care, unlawful detentions, and areas with land mines and unexploded ordnance.

Gaza

The Gaza Strip, which shares borders with Israel and Egypt, is largely under the control of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization designated as such by the State Department. Terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflict are the main risk factors, and there is always the possibility of sporadic mortar or rocket fire and corresponding Israeli military responses, as per the advisory.

Burkina Faso

This West African nation is facing issues such as terrorism, and kidnapping. A state of Emergency is in place in the East and Sahel regions, and terrorist attacks might strike hotels, restaurants, and schools with little warning.

Central African Republic

Although there have been no reports of targeted violence or crimes against U.S. citizens, violent crimes and unexpected road and border closures are commonplace. The embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is limited due to factors such as crime, civil unrest, and kidnappings, as stated in the advisory.

Iran

All travelers face the risk of kidnapping and unlawful detention, but U.S. citizens are particularly vulnerable to arbitrary arrest and detention. Iranian-Americans, including students, journalists, and business travelers, have been arrested on charges of espionage and endangering national security.

Afghanistan

According to the State Department, a Central Asian country is dealing with various issues, including armed conflict, civil unrest, crime, terrorism, and kidnapping, which put U.S. citizens at risk of violence or abduction. Additionally, the Taliban’s control is leading to the disappearance of women’s rights. The government has also reinstated public floggings and executions. In August 2021, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul stopped operating.

Belarus

Belarus, which shares a border with Russia, is known for its arbitrary law enforcement, risk of detention, and presence of Russian military forces. This and Russia’s military activities in Ukraine have raised concerns. In February 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Minsk ceased operations.

Mali

Crime, terrorism, and kidnappings are commonplace in this landlocked West African nation after the military takeover in 2020. U.S. government non-emergency personnel and their families were told to leave the country in July 2022 because of an increased risk of terrorist activity.

Libya

Since the end of its regime more than a decade ago, Libya has been torn by internal strife between armed groups in the East and West. Risk factors include crime, terrorism, kidnappings, civil instability, and armed warfare. American citizens have been kidnapped for ransom, and terrorists have targeted Westerners’ most popular hotels and airports. In 2014, the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli ceased operations.

These dangerous countries in the Caribbean Islands rank low on the current Global Peace Index, or GPI, and other lists.

The GPI measures the relative level of peace in different countries, taking into account factors like safety, security, and political stability.

For those who plan on traveling in 2024, it’s vital to be aware of the places that come with a higher risk for tourists and locals alike.

7. The Bahamas

The Bahamas, a sought-after tropical paradise, has recently seen a concerning rise in crime, including 18 murders in Nassau since the start of 2024, prompting the US Embassy to issue a security warning.

The US State Department has escalated its travel advisory to “Exercise Increased Caution” for the Bahamas, citing violent crime, including burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults. Tourists are advised to be vigilant, especially at night and in both tourist and non-tourist areas.

Despite these warnings and incidents, including shark attacks and concerns over watercraft safety, the overall islands of the Bahamas remain generally safe for travelers. Authorities, including Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis, have pledged increased police action to improve security.

6. Puerto Rico

puerto rico flag

Some parts of this American territory are safe to visit, especially parts like San Juan Viejo. Puerto Rico is a safe destination, although it is not completely free of crime.

You should be wary of pickpockets and robbers, although most drug trafficking and gang crime hardly affect travelers. Most criminals are looking for small items like cash, flashy jewelry, phones and cameras that’s why the need to keep them in a safe place.

Dress casually when you go out, and hide your valuables when you travel by car. Otherwise, you could find a smashed window and stolen valuables when you return.

5. Dominican Republic

Is Dominican Republic Safe

The Dominican Republic is known for its beautiful beaches and wealth of nightclubs, making it a popular destination for tourists looking to escape the cold winters of the North or enjoy an island getaway.

However, the DR is also listed as low at 81 on the GPI. Reports of violent crimes like armed robbery, assault, and murder are increasingly common in the country.

The U.S. Department of State has placed the Dominican Republic as a threat level 2, meaning tourists should exercise increased caution and vigilance. In addition, it’s recommended tourists avoid flashing expensive items or wealth. It’s better to stay in tourist areas instead of in urban areas such as Santo Domingo.

4. Jamaica

Jamaica is also tied with the Dominican Republic in the GPI rankings, scoring 81. While it is well known for its tourist spots such as Negril and Montego Bay, visitors should be aware of the increasing crime rate. Tourists are often targeted in areas such as mob attacks and robberies, so caution must be taken when traveling.

Unfortunately, while Jamaica was once a popular tourist destination and considered safe, the U.S. Department of State now lists Jamaica as a threat level three, which means “reconsider travel“.

Cities such as Kingston, St. Andrew Parish, and Montego Bay have been especially listed as high-risk areas due to rising levels of crime and violence. The U.S. Department of State recommends reconsidering travel here.

January 23: U.S. State Department updates travel warning for Jamaica due to surge in crime

In a recent development, the U.S. Department of State has issued a noteworthy advisory titled “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” specifically aimed at U.S. citizens intending to visit Jamaica.

3. Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago are located at the southern tip of the Caribbean and are often overlooked when it comes to tourist destinations. Unfortunately, Trinidad and Tobago also rank low on the GPI with a score of 88, putting them just behind Jamaica and the Dominican Republic in terms of safety.

Reports of crime, including homicide, sexual assault, robbery, and even terrorist attacks are commonplace. Like Jamaica, it is also listed at a threat level 3 by the U.S. Department of State and travelers are urged to reconsider visiting the area. In particular, the areas of Port of Spain, Fort George Overlook, and all beaches are extremely dangerous and should be avoided at night time.

2. Cuba

U.S. Approves New American Airlines, JetBlue Flights To Cuba

Cuba is also incredibly popular among tourists, known for its array of clubs, beautiful resorts, delicious food, and rich culture. However, Cuba is also a dangerous place to visit with a GPI score of 98.

Violent crimes such as assault, theft, and even sexual assaults are common in the country. In addition, the U.S. Department of State lists Cuba at a threat level 2 due to the increased risk of petty crime and violent crimes.

While Cuba has a rich culture and vibrant cities, it is important to be aware of the dangers that can come with traveling there. Visitors should avoid walking alone at night and have a safety plan in place.

1. Haiti

Listed at number 129 on the GPI, Haiti is the most dangerous country in the Caribbean Islands as of 2024.

By far the most dangerous threat to U.S. tourists is kidnapping for ransom. Reports of convoys being attacked, protests, and other violent events are also common in Haiti, as well as armed robberies.

Families have had to pay thousands to help rescue their family members. The U.S. Department of State has listed Haiti at a level four, recommending no tourism to Haiti. In addition, government personnel on the island should be aware of the potential threat of kidnapping and robbery leaving the Port-au-Prince International Airport.

According to a recent survey conducted by a Volvo car dealership close to Fort Lauderdale, the average American is ready to give up over $13,000 in annual salary to be able to work from home.

3,000 employees who were asked to return to the office either full-time or in a hybrid model were included in the survey. Participants were asked by the car dealership how much of their salary they would give up in 2024 to avoid having to commute.

The exact amount that Americans said they would be willing to pay to work from home is displayed here, along with the states that are ready to pay the highest amount to do so.

How much does working from home cost?

Employees would sacrifice about 8% of their yearly pay to work remotely, according to a USA Today article about the cost of remote work.

As per a study conducted by Gunther Volvo Cars in Coconut Creek, Californians were the most willing to lose the largest amount of money to work remotely, while Montanans were the least likely to do so.

Respondents from Montana indicated they would be willing to give up $429 annually, while those from California indicated they would give up $13,759 a year.

Which state offers the highest compensation for remote work?

These are the top 10 states where employees would sacrifice the most money to avoid commuting:

  • California: $13,759
  • Washington: $13,017
  • Utah: $12,843
  • New York: $12,693
  • Colorado: $12,631
  • Maryland: $12,157
  • Massachusetts: $11,951
  • New Jersey: $11,414
  • Louisiana: $11,189
  • Rhode Island: $11,107

“The results of our survey highlight a shift in priorities. Employees have had a taste of what a commute-free life can be like, and they’re placing a substantial value on that flexibility and time saved,” Joseph Gunther from Gunther Volvo Coconut Creek told reporters.

How many people worked from home in the U.S. in 2023?

The landscape of remote work has undergone substantial changes, significantly impacting corporate cultures, workspace configurations, and employee preferences. A comprehensive analysis of remote work statistics reveals key trends and shifts in the remote employment sector:

  • As of September 2023, remote work constituted 28% of all workdays, marking a notable rise from the 7% recorded in 2019, according to WFH Research.
  • A considerable segment of the workforce, nearly 30%, expressed a preference for working from home five days a week in 2023, as per WFH Research findings.
  • Trust levels between remote workers and their managers remained high, with 70% of U.S. adults working remotely reporting a high level of managerial trust, based on a 2023 Pew Research study.
  • The principal advantage of remote work in 2023 was the flexibility it afforded individuals in managing their time, as reported by 22% of respondents in a Buffer survey. Conversely, the most significant challenge faced by remote workers was the tendency to stay home excessively, cited by 33% of participants.
  • Despite the popularity of remote work, office occupancy in the U.S. saw an uptick, surpassing 50% in September 2023, with peak occupancy reaching 60%, as indicated by data from Kastle.

Asia is a beautiful continent with a rich history and gorgeous scenery. While there are plenty of amazing countries that people like to visit, Asia also has its fair share of dangerous countries.

Some countries in Asia rise above the rest when it comes to crime, and these countries are the most dangerous, according to the Global Peace Index.

Global Peace Index World Map

Global Peace Index World Map

Suggested: Most dangerous countries in the World

8. Myanmar – 145

For the past decade, Myanmar has been a relatively safe destination, but the democratically elected government was deposed in a military coup in 2021.

Myanmar is still under military rule in 2023, and the political situation is volatile and violent. Tourists are now urged to avoid all non-essential travel. Foreign embassies remain in the country, but cannot promise security or assistance if the current stability fails.

According to the UK government, “if you decide your presence in Myanmar is essential, you should maintain a low profile and keep up to date with developments. This will involve being aware of and abiding by any curfews and restrictions around local customs. Breaching any rules will be met with consequences under Martial Law, and it is likely you won’t be able to contact an embassy or next of kin.”

The general hazards to Myanmar are thievery, unmarked landmines, monsoons, dangerous road trips, and piracy. Overall, the country is certainly one of the most dangerous in Asia.

7. Pakistan – 146

Pakistan shares a long border with India, and it is known for its incredible salt mines. Much of the famous pink Himalayan salt comes from Pakistan, but Pakistan is also known for its high crime rate.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Pakistan had a murder rate of 3.8 last year, meaning that 3.8 people in Pakistan were murdered out of every 100,000 people. The high rate of violent crime, presence of terrorist groups, and high poverty rate make Pakistan one of the most dangerous countries in Asia.

6. Iran – 147

The US State Department advised citizens to avoid travel to Iran due to the risk of kidnapping and arbitrary arrest and detention and also exercise increased caution due to wrongful detentions. Other countries such as Australia and Canada do the same.

This is especially true and risky for those who hold dual citizenship with Iran and the United States, and has a disproportionate impact on various professions such as journalism.

It is also more difficult to obtain consular services and assistance in Iran because there is no functioning U.S. Embassy there.

If you must travel to Iran, consider signing up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (or STEP) so that you can stay informed about events there and, if necessary, leave quickly and safely.

5. North Korea – 149

Since the split between North Korea and South Korea at the start of the Cold War, the two countries have gone in completely opposite directions. South Korea is one of the most developed countries in the world, while North Korea is one of the most impoverished.

North Korea is also one of the most dangerous countries in Asia. The opaque country is known for its oppressive regime, unparalleled human rights violations, and lack of social support. Because North Korea does not share a lot of information with the external world, the murder rate is not available from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

4. Iraq – 154

Situated between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, Iraq and Mesopotamia was once the cradle of civilization. Now, Iraq is a country that has become synonymous with terrorism, war, and poverty.

The United States has fought two wars in Iraq during the last 40 years, but the country remains a hotbed for terrorism and violent crime. The most recent set of statistics from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2014, give Iraq an intentional homicide rate of more than 10 per 100,000 people.

3. Russia – 158

russia protest

Currently waging the largest land war in Europe since World War II, Russia is another incredibly dangerous country in Asia. Russia is a country with a tremendous amount of history, but it is also known for the arbitrary detention of tourists and citizens alike.

In 2020, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated that Russia had a murder rate of 7.3 per 100,000 people, making it one of the most dangerous countries in Asia.

2. Yemen – 162

Situated on the coast of the Middle East, Yemen is one of the most dangerous countries in Asia. The country is known for its widespread disease, hunger, and terrorism. The humanitarian crisis is one of the worst in the world, and that makes Yemen a dangerous place to live and visit.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that Yemen has a murder rate of approximately 6.8. Given the terrorism, drug trafficking, and human trafficking in Yemen, it is one of the most dangerous countries in Asia.

LATEST NEWS FROM YEMEN:

January 24, 2024: US Navy escorts cargo ships to safety after Houthi missile attack from Yemen.

1. Afghanistan – 163

Afghanistan has been in a state of almost continuous war for the past 40 years. Fighting wars with Russia and the United States, in addition to multiple periods of civil war, Afghanistan remains the most dangerous country in Asia, and one of the most dangerous in the entire world.

A hotbed for terrorism and violent crime, Afghanistan is not a country that is safe for anyone. Afghanistan was estimated to have an intentional homicide rate of 6.7 in 2018 by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, but the actual death toll is likely far higher.

After reviewing its recommendations, the U.S. State Department still advises against traveling to Myanmar/Burma (Level 4: Do Not Travel). Explosions and other violent acts can happen anywhere, at any time, even in Yangon. Attacks against foreign-favorite locations, such as public areas and civilian infrastructure, can happen. The attack’s location and intensity are unpredictable.

During a coup d’état in February 2021, elected government officials were detained and overthrown by the military regime in Myanmar. Protests and rallies against military rule are still held, frequently on important occasions. In response to these protests, the military has detained people without cause and used lethal force against both protestors and viewers.

The Department of State has concluded that there is a chance that the military regime will wrongfully detain American citizens.

Because U.S. government employees need special permission to travel outside of Rangoon, the U.S. government’s ability to provide emergency services in Myanmar is limited.

Tips On Keeping Safe While Traveling in Myanmar

  • Maintain a high level of vigilance at all times.
  • Minimize unnecessary movements, particularly during events of national importance.
  • Periodically assess and enhance your security practices.
  • Stay abreast of political and social developments by closely following the news.
  • Monitor media updates to stay informed about the evolving situation.
  • Prepare by stocking up on sufficient water and food supplies for a minimum of 4 days.
  • Charge your mobile phone in anticipation of potential internet, communication, and power disruptions.
  • Steer clear of participating in demonstrations and gatherings.
  • Be prepared for roadblocks, searches, and an increased military presence.

What’s the current situation in Myanmar in 2024?

As of 2024, Myanmar continues to face intense internal conflict and humanitarian crises. The ongoing resistance against the military junta, which began after the February 2021 coup, has intensified. Several resistance groups, including the Brotherhood Alliance and the National Unity Government, have coordinated widespread attacks against the military, leading to significant territorial gains and momentum for the resistance movement. Despite these developments, the conflict has had severe consequences, including increased military attacks on civilian populations and notable human rights violations.

The situation has led to a staggering number of civilian casualties, with Human Rights Watch reporting the arrest of over 24,000 anti-coup protesters and the death of 4,000 since the coup. The Myanmar military’s actions have been characterized by targeted attacks on civilians, including the use of thermobaric bombs and airstrikes, resulting in numerous deaths and violations of international humanitarian law.

The humanitarian situation in Myanmar is dire, with nearly 2 million people internally displaced and 94,000 refugees fleeing to neighboring countries. The United Nations’ Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for 2024 highlights the escalating fighting, displacement, and protection threats affecting large parts of the country. Approximately 18.6 million people, including 6 million children, need humanitarian assistance due to disrupted healthcare, education, food insecurity, and other crises.

These developments in Myanmar indicate a prolonged and complex conflict, with significant implications for the region’s stability and the well-being of its citizens. For more detailed information about the current situation in Myanmar, you can refer to sources like ACLED (Conflict Watchlist 2024), Human Rights Watch (World Report 2024: Myanmar), and the United Nations in Myanmar (Myanmar Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan 2024).
