With so many beautiful destinations to choose from, the Caribbean is famous for its relaxed atmosphere, tropical beaches, and abundant sea life. When planning a Caribbean vacation, safety is likely one of your top concerns, so here are some of the safest Caribbean destinations.

All of these islands are classified as Level 1 – Exercise Normal Precautions by the U.S. Department of State. White this is the lowest level advisory and travelers should still be aware of the normal risks of any international travel.

Dominica

Lying south of Guadeloupe and north of Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean, Dominica is the youngest Caribbean Island and the last to be colonized, ultimately earning its independence on November 3, 1978. Air travelers can connect to Dominica directly from Miami on American Airlines and make regional connections from surrounding Caribbean hubs.

An island without mega-resorts but full of some of the healthiest coral reefs, slumbering volcanoes, and verdant fauna, Dominica offers a range of hikes, waterfalls, and jungle adventures.

Grenada

Is Grenada Safe? Travel Advisory 2023

As the spice island of the Caribbean, Grenada is celebrating its 50th year of independence in 2024. The verdant island is home to tons of mona monkeys and is reliant on its agriculture and export crops like nutmeg, but is gaining traction amongst international travelers.

The small island is known for its lush forests and waterfalls and the world’s first underwater garden The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park.

Anguilla

Is Anguilla Safe To Visit? Travel Advisory 2024

Anguilla is known to have some of the most beautiful beaches, the island is ringed with 33 beaches, in the world. Lying just off-the-beaten-path, it can be still reached from three major gateways – Miami, FL (MIA), Puerto Rico (SJU), and St. Martin, (SXM), as well as private air transportation.

Boasting a great culinary scene, major festivals and luxury accommodations, this Level 1 island hosts tons of attractions to allure tourists.

Bermuda

The British island territory in the North Atlantic Ocean is made up of a string of islands in the Sargasso Sea. Famous for its picturesque beaches, like its pink-sand beaches, gorgeous reefs, and a complex cave network, it is also a global financial hub.

Just a couple hours’ flight from New York City, the luxury island is only 21 miles in length but there is much to do from St. George’s to Hamilton to the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Barbados

Rich in cultural, heritage, sporting, culinary, and eco experiences, Barbados has something for every kind of traveler. As the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean, the island is home to over 400 restaurants and eateries and is also known as the birthplace of rum.

Barbados is considered one of the safest countries in the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic and those traveling to this paradise in Summer will likely provide lower prices and less crowded beaches as it is the off-season in Barbados.

Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda

Positioned where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet, the sovereign island country presents a twin-island Caribbean paradise. From its superb coastline and pink and white-sandy beaches, and crystal clear waters to its protective reefs, it is also the largest nesting colony of frigate birds in the Caribbean.

The island has no mountains or forests and its British history is still evident through its architecture and 18th century Nelson’s Dockyard. Along with the beaches, the culinary delicacies are another reason visitors come to visit.

Once again, this Caribbean island is reporting a record number of air and cruise arrivals in 2024 despite the negative travel advisory emitted by the US government earlier this year.

As of today, the country has welcomed 1,016,185 air visitors and over 700,000 cruise passengers. This represents a 4.6 percent and 23 percent increase over last year, Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, told reporters this week.

Jamaica has been working non-stop on different fronts to achieve these extraordinary results.

“We will continue to aggressively market the destination and work assiduously with our partners to get there,”  Bartlett said.

For Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, the island’s laid-back environment is the key to its success among tourists from all over the world, especially from the United States.

“Whether it’s our food, music, or entertainment, there is a vibe that only comes alive in Jamaica,” said White.

Considering the country’s stats, Jamaica is on its way to achieving its five million annual visitor target over the next 4 years rather than the five initially forecasted by tourism authorities, said Bartlett.

Is JAMAICA Safe? Travel Advisory 2024

On January 23, the US government updated its Travel Advisory due to a spike in crime and the lack of proper medical services available for visitors and locals.

Ironically, American tourists are the ones pushing up tourism figures in Jamaica in recent times.

Visitors from the US have risen by 16 percent over 2023, said the tourism minister. Americans represent 74 percent of all international tourists visiting the island.

This “speaks to the confidence our tourism partners and visitors have in the destination,” Bartlett concluded.

As per the advisory, US citizens should “Reconsider Travel” to this destination for the reasons mentioned above.

As a “Level 3” country, Jamaica is being impacted by violent crimes such as armed robberies, homicides, and frequent sexual assaults taking place even in all-inclusive resorts, the advisory reads.

This Caribbean island possesses the highest homicide rate in the Western Hemisphere and crimes are not frequently solved. Americans who get into legal trouble may not find justice.

If you still decide to visit this island, the government urges you to purchase travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, as “the Department of State does not pay medical bills.”

Last but not least, it’s important to avoid bringing any types of firearms or objects related to them, avoid public transportation or physically resist any robbery attempts.

This country has a large number of places that should be avoided at all costs. Check them out here.

Almost for any Caribbean island you visit, the perfect vacation is guaranteed. However, choosing the right destination isn’t always easy, with so many getaways available.

One important factor to keep in mind that can ruin your vacation during summer in the Caribbean is sargassum seaweed! June, July, and August are the peak months of the seaweed season. Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered and we picked the islands that have statistically the least amount of seaweed on their shores.

Whether you’re an adventurous solo traveler, a couple on honeymoon, or a family of five, on this list, you will find the 8 best Caribbean islands to visit in summer 2024.

St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands)

Is St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands) Safe? Travel Advisory 2024

St. Crois is a great destination for an authentic Caribbean experience. Despite being the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and with easy access to the U.S. mainland (and no passport needed), it still goes unnoticed. But there are several reasons you might fall in love with it.

Apart from gorgeous beaches, it has plenty to offer to history buffs – from colonial architecture to sites like Estate Whim Plantation Museum or Fort Christiansvaern. You can also enjoy some outdoor activities, including hiking and diving, and top-class shopping and dining.

If you don’t like to stay in one place for too long, why not do a bit of island hopping? You can easily reach St. Thomas, St. John, and the British Virgin Islands for an overnight stay from St. Croix.

And in case you didn’t realize, Americans can visit the U.S. Virgin Islands without a passport!

Bonaire

bonaire beach

A part of the Dutch islands trio ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), Bonaire has its laid-back atmosphere and many secluded spots to unwind. It is an amazing choice for those who like spending their vacation unconventionally, without crowds.

Head to Washington Slagbaai National Park to find the most remote beaches and the iconic salt flats with flamingos. The colorful buildings and dive shops of the capital – Kralendijk – are also pretty impressive. From there, you can take a trip to the little islet Klein Bonaire.

Love exploring the underwater world? Bonaire is also home to the first and oldest marine park – the Bonaire National Marine Park. Other watersports you can engage in are windsurfing and kitesurfing. Lac Bay in particular is known to provide fantastic conditions for those.

Anguilla

Anguilla is a fairly unknown Caribbean Island that only became popular in the last few years during the post-pandemic travel boom! It’s a British Overseas Territory located in the Eastern part of the Caribbean Sea and most of its tourists come from the U.S. or UK.

Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) published statistics from the first quarter of 2024 and it shows that the country welcomed over 62,188 visitors which is a 22% increase compared to 2023. This small number tells you how much of a “kept secret” is this island.

The island boasts only 33 beaches in total and some of the best ones are Shoal Bay, Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Sandy Island.

If you’re an all-inclusive resort type of traveler, Anguilla Island isn’t for you! Due to its amazing food scene, the island only has about 5 all-inclusive resorts.

Aruba

With its varied landscape and plenty of activities to offer, Aruba appeals to all kinds of travelers. Beach lovers will appreciate the powdery white sands and turquoise waters inviting them with the perfect conditions to snorkel, dive, or windsurf.

Aruba is proud to have one of the world’s most beautiful beaches which is also one of the most wanted beaches without seaweed in the Caribbean.

On the other hand, those looking to reconnect with nature can set off to Arikok National Park. Not only is it a fantastic spot to hike but also to learn something about the area’s history, flora, and fauna.

On top of that, as Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt, it’s safe to visit all year round. Plus the weather is always a blast.

Dominica

For the ultimate diving opportunities, you simply must visit Dominica. Its shores are full of extraordinary underwater landscapes, such as the streams of volcanic bubbles at Champagne Reef or the submerged volcanic crater of Scott’s Head.

Often nicknamed the Nature Island, Dominica also boasts tropical lush greenery, and the best way to explore it is through one of its countless hiking trails. One of the most popular hikes includes Boiling Lake, the second-largest hot spring of its kind in the world. For the daring ones, there is the Waitukubuli National Trail – the Caribbean’s longest trail that stretches over 115 miles.

Alternatively, you can immerse in Dominica’s unspoiled beauty by river tubing or on a guided eco-tour. No matter your preferences, this island will enchant you.

Long Island, Bahamas

With its lovely beaches and high-end resorts, the Bahamas is a well-known vacation destination. However, as it’s less developed than other Bahamian islands, Long Island is still off the mainstream tourist path and offers a genuine Bahamian experience.

Relax on secluded beaches and hidden coves, dive to see untouched coral reefs, sharks, and even sea turtles, or let traditional Bahamian cuisine seduce your taste buds. Fishing and boating opportunities are also excellent there.

Wait. That’s not all. When in Long Island, checking out Dean’s Blue Hole is simply a must. The world’s second-deepest underwater sinkhole attracts freedivers from around the planet. Now it’s your turn to swim, dive, or snorkel over it (note that you gotta be a good swimmer, as it’s rather dangerous).

Virgin Gorda, BVI

Virgin Gorda, BVI

You’ve surely heard of the British Virgin Islands, but have you heard of Virgin Gorda? We’re not surprised. The third-largest of the archipelago is one of the Caribbean best-kept secrets. Even though it boasts stunning nature and beaches, it has managed to stay without intrusive commercialism, and its unique atmosphere is just waiting for you to discover.

Hike the trails of the scenic landscapes, take the best views from Gorda Peak, or explore the island’s coastline on a yacht or sailboat. You can also properly unwind at one of its luxurious resorts, and indulge yourself with fine dining and spa treatments. All that makes it a popular destination among celebrities, and you can feel like one too. At least for a week.

Jamaica

Located in the Eastern Caribbean Sea lies a British Overseas Territory filled with expansive sun-kissed beaches: the Island of Anguilla.

Unknown to many, its popularity has been steadily increasing over the last few years. According to the Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB), the island is breaking tourism records this year, the same way it did in 2023.

In the first quarter, the country welcomed 62,188 travelers accounting for a 22.2 percent increase when compared to 2023 totals, said ATB officials.

Also, tourists spending at least one night in the destination increased by 15 percent compared to 2023.

These rather positive results have been possible thanks to visitors from key tourism markets such as the United States and Canada.

So far in 2024, 41,399 American tourists have touched down in Anguilla, an increase of 32.7 percent over the same period in 2023.

For its part, 4,689 Canadians, an increase of  22.4 percent from 2023, have also visited the country this year.

In December 2023, the country broke another record with 19,178 arrivals, an increase of 27.9 percent compared to 14,992 in the same timeframe in 2022.

But the ambitious government of Anguilla is not fully satisfied with these numbers and wants to scale operations to a whole new level.

To accomplish this, the island’s Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (AXA) is undergoing massive renovations, scheduled to be completed in 2025.

“This administration made a commitment to significantly modernize Anguilla’s infrastructure, for the benefit of both our visitors and importantly, our on-island community,” said Haydn Hughes, Anguilla’s Minister of Infrastructure, Communications, Housing, Utilities and Tourism.

Earlier this year, the country also opened a new ferry terminal at Blowing Point as part of its new marketing strategy.

“The opening of the Blowing Point Ferry Terminal is yet another commitment fulfilled, along with the redesign of the Valley Main Road, the recent upgrades at the airport, and the development of the 20-year airport master plan,” Hughes said.

Anguilla’s economy heavily relies on luxury tourism, offshore banking and lobster fishing.

According to experts, the island’s economic growth heavily depends on foreign investment from countries like the United States, Canada, and some European nations.

Reasons Behind Anguilla’s Tourism Growth

5 Reasons Why Travelers Are Flocking To Anguilla In Record Numbers

Stacey Liburd, Director of Tourism for Anguilla, believes that these optimistic statistics are possible thanks to the support they receive from their stakeholders.

“Tourism thrives on collaboration, and this remarkable achievement underscores the immense cooperation and backing we receive from our valued stakeholders,” she said.

According to Anguilla’s Tourist Board, the main reason behind its current success lies in the expansion of its marketing efforts in 2024, by introducing “new destination pillars and developing new markets to increase arrivals and occupancy rates while growing Anguilla’s tourism industry.”

Following positive results in 2023, the cruise industry in the Caribbean has been seeing a resurgence in visitors in 2024. Close to 32 million travelers cruised in 2023, a seven percent increase over 2019, with more expected to travel in 2024.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)’s 2024 State of the Cruise Industry report, over 44% of those travelers were to the Caribbean. This number is more than double the 18.5% who sailed to the next-highest region, the Mediterranean.

The 12.9 million cruise travelers to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda in 2023 grew by one million visitors when comparing 2023 to 2019.

The Bahamas saw almost 40% higher than 2019 levels, while in Barbados, 2024 visitors are expected to exceed its 2023 numbers by almost 200,000. Curacao is also expected to deliver a 13% uptick in cruise travelers compared to 2023 totals.

Following a near 30% increase in 2023 compared with 2022, Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s tourism minister reaffirmed visitors at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach, that the country is setting a target of over 400,000 annual cruise visitors.

While there has been significant increases in multiple destinations in the region, there is room for growth in other island countries hoping to attract tourists.

One such city which has seen an increase of 22 percent over the January and February months compared to 2023 has been Cozumel. Cozumel recorded the arrival of 900,000 cruise passengers in this time frame with 75 ships docking in the initial 14 days of 2024.

Nearly 1 Million Cruise Passengers Arrived In Cozumel In Just 60 Days In 2024

The Port of Cozumel is the fourth most visited port in the world welcoming more than two million cruise passengers each year. The island in the Caribbean Sea welcomes cruise ships and passengers from around the world with all the major cruise lines stopping at the Punta Maya, Punta Langosta and SSA México shipping terminals on the island of Cozumel.

The once-secluded hideaway is one of Mexico’s most-visited locations in the Caribbean region. Home to clear turquoise waters, this relatively small island off the coast of Playa del Carmen is known for its pristine beaches and being a premier diving destination.

With countless activities on land and in the water, it is an island paradise in every sense of the term. The glistening tropical paradise is home to luxury resorts, Mayan history and modern amenities.

Compared to other regions in Mexico, Cozumel has a very low crime rate and is considered a very safe area to travel to.

A new awe-inspiring underwater sculpture park has opened to water-sport lovers under the sea of Divi Little Bay, Sint Maarten.

Go down deep in the ocean to visit the 300 captivating sculptures placed along a trail that forms the spirit of Under SXM Sculpture Park, a breathtaking art gallery that highlights Sint Maarten’s history and culture.

Deep Blue Sea, a UK-based company, was in charge of building this underwater exhibition with an investment of over $1.2 million.

Under SXM Sculpture Park

Talented local artists also contributed to the creation of this exhibit. Visitors will be taken through four distinct galleries, each paying homage to the country’s memorable past and promising future.

This mesmerizing aquatic gallery not only serves as a tourist hotspot but also as an artificial reef to boost the island’s aquatic ecosystems, offering adventure enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe diverse marine life.

Created with environmentally responsible materials, these sculptures also provide shelter for schools of fish and promote coral growth.

These sculptures “play a crucial role in creating a protected habitat for marine species to thrive,” said a local tour operator.

Over 2.28 million passengers went through Cancun International Airport (CUN) in March 2024, an increase of 10.8 percent, breaking the record set in the same timeframe in 2023, according to data retrieved from ASUR.

This achievement places Cancun as the most sought-after hotspot in Mexico. Authorities forecast that this city will welcome over 6 million travelers this year if the trend continues.

These figures are particularly impressive considering that with the opening of the new Tulum International Airport (TQO), some Cancun air traffic was expected to be rerouted to Tulum.

As of today, Tulum boasts more than 60 international flights per week and counting. In December 2024, Felipe Carrillo Puerto is scheduled to receive its first non-stop flight from Europe.

(TQO) is also expected to surpass 32 thousand operations, carrying over 5.5 million local and international travelers in its first year of operation.

Other international airports receiving massive numbers of passengers include Cozumel, Huatulco, Merida, Minatitlan, Oaxaca, Tapachula, Veracruz and Villahermosa.

The second destination international visitors choose to visit is Cozumel, for its laid-back atmosphere and friendly locals.

This time around, the Pueblo Magico of Cozumel registered 73,439 passengers in only March, representing an increase of 19 percent compared to March 2023.

Data spanning January to March reveals the island saw 30 percent more passengers than the numbers registered in the same period in 2023.

This destination features nine direct flights from the US, two from Canada and many others from Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Along with these impressive airport figures, January to March registered a hotel occupancy rate of over 85 percent.

The destination also welcomed 452 cruise ships carrying 1.4 million visitors. Authorities are confident of being able to house over 9.3 million cruise passengers by the end of 2024.

Merida is another destination that experienced an increase of over 10.8 percent in international tourist numbers compared to the same month last year.

On the other side, domestic travel only saw a minor rise in tourism of 3 percent.

Everything suggests that the skyrocketing fares offered during Easter holidays motivated Mexicans to stay home.

The hard truth is that traveling to Mexico is becoming more expensive year after year. Last Easter season, visitors to Los Cabos had to spend over $550 per person, per night, with no airfare included.

Thus, if planning a winter getaway to this tropical paradise, make sure to book your accommodation and airline tickets in advance to avoid overcharges.

Sargassum seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean has been invading the beaches and ruining holiday plans for many travelers in the last few years and it’s not getting and better in 2024.

We have compiled a list of Caribbean beaches that have historically not been affected by the seasonal bloom of sargassum to help you with your travel plans.

Current seaweed situation in the Caribbean in 2024

The 2024 seaweed season has been mild in the Caribbean so far. Most of the places that get invaded every year report less sargassum this season. The reason behind it is most likely the lower sea temperatures this time of the year than usual but that is currently changing and more seaweed arrival is expected.

Seaweed reporting, stay updated

If you still considering vacationing in the area with seaweed and would like to stay up to date with the sargassum situation in those areas, we recommend joining our reporting groups on Facebook:

Eagle, Palm, and Baby Beaches in Aruba

Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island, is known for its fine white sand beaches, opulent resorts, and refreshing breezes. Its well-known beaches, including Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Baby Beach, are fortunate to lie outside the hurricane belt and the sargassum seaweed belt.

Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay Beach, another of the most beautiful beaches in the world, offers crystal clear sea waters and incredibly soft sand. This long coastline is especially calm because it is protected by a barrier reef. At Grace Bay Beach, the water bottom is pristine and smooth.

If you are looking for a Caribbean beach without seaweed for a family, couple or group vacation, Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, is unquestionably a place to take into consideration.

Playa Porto Mari on Curacao, Dutch Caribbean

One of Curacao’s most stunning beaches is also one of the most beautiful algae-free beaches in the Caribbean. Playa Porto Mari, a private beach on Curacao’s west coast, charges an entrance fee (visit the Porto Mari website for hours and prices), but the cost also includes access to several amenities.

Morne Rouge Beach on Grenada

On the island of Grenada, there is a stunning, seaweed-free coastline with crystal-clear waters. Although it is less known than Grand Anse Beach and also known as BBC Beach, Morne Rouge is hardly affected by Sargassum algae.

Especially families enjoy swimming here because of the calm sea. If you are looking for a family-friendly Caribbean beach without seaweed, Morne Rouge is an excellent choice.

Grand Anse in St. Georges, Grenada

Sargassum seaweed has not yet invaded Grenada’s beautiful Grande Anse coast. Quite apart from its gorgeous beaches, Grenada is a popular Caribbean destination thanks to its artisanal rum farms, organic bean-to-bar chocolate, and mountains dotted with waterfalls.

Beaches on the Caribbean Side of Colombia

Best beaches in Colombia

The Caribbean coast of Colombia boasts some of the cleanest beaches, especially notable during the seaweed season, where such issues are minimal.

Beaches like Playa Blanca in Barú, the pristine sands of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, and the serene Isla de San Andrés are renowned for their clear waters and well-maintained shores.

These beach spots are ideal for travelers seeking tropical getaways without the common inconveniences of seaweed accumulation, offering perfect spots for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres Sees First Arrival Of Sargassum On its Most Popular Beach

If you really want to go to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, there are still some beaches there that do not have Sargassum algae. Sargassum tides are most likely to hit the exposed eastern coasts, but some beaches, like Playa Norte on the island of Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo, are usually free of seaweed. Much depends on the wind and ocean currents, however.

Secret Beach Belize

Belize is home to many beautiful beaches, but one that stands out from the rest is Secret Beach. As the name suggests, this beach is hidden away from the crowds and is a secluded spot that’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Also, seems this amazing place is a secret to Sargassum as you won’t find it there.

The Secret Beach is not only a perfect place to relax and unwind, but it’s also an ideal spot for water sports enthusiasts. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking are just a few of the activities you can enjoy on this beach.

Little Bay Beach, St. Maarten

Little Bay Beach is typically in pristine condition year-round.

This small island is divided between Dutch and French territories and has 37 beautiful beaches spread over its 34 square miles. Sargassum can occasionally be a problem, especially on the east coast.

Little Bay Beach on the south side of the island, just minutes from the capital city of Philipsburg, is an excellent choice if you are looking for a beach in St. Maarten without seaweed.

Due to its location on a secluded peninsula and the protection provided by rocky outcroppings on both sides, it is rarely affected by sargassum seaweed.

Southern Tip of Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

Although the opulent St. James Club on Antigua’s eastern windward side had to be closed for three months in 2019 because of an enormous surge of Sargassum seaweed, numerous other Antiguan beaches often have no sargassum seaweed.

Located on the southern tip of Antigua, Curtain Bluff Resort is situated on two beaches in a private setting where little seaweed arrives.

The 72-room boutique resort’s amenities include an all-inclusive gourmet restaurant, tennis, squash, sailing, guided snorkeling excursions, and sea kayaking.

Playa PortoMari, Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean

Renowned as a beloved summer getaway, Curacao entices travelers with its stunning beaches and remarkable amenities, and Playa PortoMari stands out among them.

This beach ranks high on the list of popular destinations in Curaçao, celebrated for its vibrant marine ecosystem, well-designed facilities, and captivating natural splendor. Divers are drawn to the awe-inspiring double reef, while snorkelers can trace trails that unveil an array of reef formations teeming with captivating oceanic creatures.

Bloody Bay and Long Bay Beaches in Negril, Jamaica

Hidden Gem of Negril boasts Bloody Bay and Long Bay which are havens of natural beauty, distinguished by its remarkable sargassum seaweed-free beaches.

They are idyllic escapes where beach lovers can revel in crystal-clear waters and powdery sands without the intrusion of the seaweed.

Other Caribbean beaches without sargassum all year round:

  • Bayahibe Beach, Dominican Republic
  • Crane Beach, Barbados
  • Trunk Bay, US Virgin Islands
  • Pigeon Point Beach, Tobago
  • Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda
