Italy, Turkey and South Africa have embraced the digital nomad trend, offering visas tailored to this demographic.

According to these governments, digital nomads will bring entrepreneurial ideas to their countries, which will be valuable to technology and similar sectors.

Let’s review the specifics and requirements to get a digital nomad visa in these countries.

Italy

This Town In Italy Is Giving 3 Months Of Free Rent To Digital Nomads

Italy’s long-awaited digital nomad visa is finally available for non-EU citizens who carry out “a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy,” reads the decree.

Requirements:

  • Eligible candidates must earn €28,000 annually or more.
  • Robust health insurance that covers you for your entire stay.
  • Proof of accommodation for the time the visa is valid.
  • Proof that you have been a digital nomad or remote worker for longer than six months.
  • Criminal records.

The visa is valid for one year and it can be renewed if the applicant has the same conditions.

Digital nomads must be tax-compliant in Italy before applying for this visa. The Italian government will contact the taxation office in the applicant’s country of origin regarding taxes.

If interested, visit an Italian diplomatic-consular office to start the process.

Turkey

Turkey Joins The Hype And Launches Visa For Digital Nomads

The Republic of Türkiye is now offering a digital nomad visa for international remote workers.

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry gazetted the requirements for those who are interested.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be aged 21 to 55 years old.
  • A university degree.
  • Digital nomads must be employed, self-employed, or hold a business contract with an overseas company.
  • Eligible candidates must earn $36,000 or more per year.
  • A valid passport.

Successful applicants will obtain a Digital Nomad Identification Certificate. Then, they have to submit this certificate and the rest of the documents to a Turkey visa center or consulate to get the actual visa.

The following are the nationalities that can apply:

“France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Bulgaria, Romania, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, United Kingdom, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Belarus.”

South Africa

South Africa is the latest African country to offer a visa for “highly skilled workers” in the technology sector (some exceptions apply). Nomads will be allowed to live and work in this country for a set period.

Requirements:

  • Proof that you earn ZAR 1 million per year (around $53,000).
  • The foreign company you work for, may need to register and comply with South Africa’s PAYE tax system.
  • Proof of a rental contract, a lease or a hotel booking for the time you’ll be in the country.
  • Health insurance tailored for digital nomads working abroad.
  • An employment contract or any other document that proves you are self-employed.
  • A valid passport.

According to a decree released in February, visas may be issued for up to three years.

Applicants who will only stay in South Africa for less than six months won’t be subjected to income tax.

If you have ever dreamed of working for an international company without making a permanent move, now may be just the right time to consider searching for a new remote role with a company that is based outside the US.

Many workers across the United States became reluctant to head back to the office after experiencing the benefits of working from home in 2020, which has led to a drastic shift in what the typical American workforce looks like. More workers are becoming interested in seeking a permanent remote job at the same time that such positions are becoming more difficult to find, but opportunities to work for a company in another country from home are seeing very different trends.

The number of American citizens hired by companies that are based outside the US rose by approximately 62 percent in 2023, with the vast majority of these positions being remote. Companies that are based in the UK, France, Australia, Singapore, and Canada are particularly likely to be interested in hiring American remote team members, although savvy job hunters also have more opportunities than ever to connect with even more unique opportunities across the globe.

While approximately half of Americans working for international companies are under 35 years old and looking to bring the most innovative skills to their new employers, opportunities to explore something new in any stage of life are possible thanks to the increasing capabilities of technology.

If you are pondering whether working for an international company without leaving the United States might be a good fit for you, there are several logistical considerations to keep in mind before accepting a job offer. Significant time zone differences, correctly avoiding having to pay taxes in both countries, potential differences in what professionalism and typical employer policies might look like in certain regions, and other details are important to thoroughly understand before getting started to avoid unintentional missteps and get the most out of your new position.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed our work habits forever, ushering in an era where remote or hybrid working models are increasingly becoming the norm. This huge shift in where work is expected to occur prompts a pivotal question: where are the best places to work remotely?

The 2023 Global Remote Work Index, an extensive study conducted by cybersecurity firm Nordlayer, offers some insights.

Analyzing data from 108 countries, the report evaluates them across various parameters including healthcare, socio-economic factors, human rights protections, and internet stability.

The findings reveal an obvious trend, with Europe emerging as a leading destination for remote workers and taking all of the Top 10 positions.

Denmark stands out as the overall leader when considering factors such as social and economic security, digital and physical infrastructure, and cyber safety. This may not come as a surprise as Denmark also frequently tops the list of happiest countries on Earth in various indices over the last several years. Despite its high living costs and expensive internet, Denmark’s excellent internet quality, social inclusion, and healthcare services propel it to the top of the list.

Following closely are the Netherlands and Germany, each distinguished by their unique strengths. The Netherlands excels in personal rights, inclusivity, and social safety, while Germany boasts a robust legal system and the most affordable internet in addition to high economic security for remote workers.

Portugal presents a unique case. Ranking sixth overall, it offers a more affordable cost of living compared to its European counterparts. This positions Portugal as an attractive option for remote workers seeking value for money.

Related: 34 Best DIGITAL NOMAD VISAS Offered by Countries

Interestingly, the study notes that while European nations dominate the top ranks, they often lag in digital infrastructure compared to Asian countries. Singapore, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates lead in this category, although their overall positions in the index are lower. This discrepancy highlights the diverse priorities and values across different regions.

The report also sheds light on countries that excel in economic security for remote workers. Nations like the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and Spain lead in this aspect, along with other countries like Malta. This also points to the reason why many digital nomads hail from these countries.

The European dominance in the index is notable, but it’s important to recognize the varying priorities of individuals when choosing a remote work location. Factors such as cost of living, internet affordability, and social benefits play significant roles in these decisions. One factor not mentioned in the index but also important for remote workers looking to save on transportation costs is the walkability of a city. Getting from one place to another quickly and cheaply often results in increased satisfaction among residents.

Overall, the 2023 Global Remote Work Index provides a comprehensive overview of the best places for remote work, considering a multitude of factors. It underscores the impact of the pandemic on our work habits and highlights the evolving nature of the global workforce. As remote work continues to be a significant aspect of our professional lives, understanding these dynamics becomes crucial for both individuals and organizations navigating this new normal.

According to a recent survey conducted by a Volvo car dealership close to Fort Lauderdale, the average American is ready to give up over $13,000 in annual salary to be able to work from home.

3,000 employees who were asked to return to the office either full-time or in a hybrid model were included in the survey. Participants were asked by the car dealership how much of their salary they would give up in 2024 to avoid having to commute.

The exact amount that Americans said they would be willing to pay to work from home is displayed here, along with the states that are ready to pay the highest amount to do so.

How much does working from home cost?

Employees would sacrifice about 8% of their yearly pay to work remotely, according to a USA Today article about the cost of remote work.

As per a study conducted by Gunther Volvo Cars in Coconut Creek, Californians were the most willing to lose the largest amount of money to work remotely, while Montanans were the least likely to do so.

Respondents from Montana indicated they would be willing to give up $429 annually, while those from California indicated they would give up $13,759 a year.

Which state offers the highest compensation for remote work?

These are the top 10 states where employees would sacrifice the most money to avoid commuting:

  • California: $13,759
  • Washington: $13,017
  • Utah: $12,843
  • New York: $12,693
  • Colorado: $12,631
  • Maryland: $12,157
  • Massachusetts: $11,951
  • New Jersey: $11,414
  • Louisiana: $11,189
  • Rhode Island: $11,107

“The results of our survey highlight a shift in priorities. Employees have had a taste of what a commute-free life can be like, and they’re placing a substantial value on that flexibility and time saved,” Joseph Gunther from Gunther Volvo Coconut Creek told reporters.

How many people worked from home in the U.S. in 2023?

The landscape of remote work has undergone substantial changes, significantly impacting corporate cultures, workspace configurations, and employee preferences. A comprehensive analysis of remote work statistics reveals key trends and shifts in the remote employment sector:

  • As of September 2023, remote work constituted 28% of all workdays, marking a notable rise from the 7% recorded in 2019, according to WFH Research.
  • A considerable segment of the workforce, nearly 30%, expressed a preference for working from home five days a week in 2023, as per WFH Research findings.
  • Trust levels between remote workers and their managers remained high, with 70% of U.S. adults working remotely reporting a high level of managerial trust, based on a 2023 Pew Research study.
  • The principal advantage of remote work in 2023 was the flexibility it afforded individuals in managing their time, as reported by 22% of respondents in a Buffer survey. Conversely, the most significant challenge faced by remote workers was the tendency to stay home excessively, cited by 33% of participants.
  • Despite the popularity of remote work, office occupancy in the U.S. saw an uptick, surpassing 50% in September 2023, with peak occupancy reaching 60%, as indicated by data from Kastle.

Accounting is the perfect job for digital nomads. According to FlexJobs, this is the number one ranked profession that is sought after by many businesses and industries. The main jobs of maintaining financial records and analyzing data can be accomplished through online communications. This includes preparing tax documents. As a result, accountants can work anywhere from their own homes to exotic locations such as Bali or Brazil.

There is a shortage of professional accountants with degrees throughout the US. This is the result of Baby Boomers retiring from the profession. Many of them now travel, and they learn to do their job from remote locations. Traveling seniors may work only part-time as accountants for their former employers or as freelancers during tax season. Many countries, including Costa Rica and Mexico, offer special programs for retired people who want to live and work remotely.

The accounting industry wants to attract a newer, younger group of people to this profession. Many young people studied and completed the educational requirements for degrees in business and accounting remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21. Educational requirements include a bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or business administration. Advanced degrees are necessary for high-paying jobs. This includes the certification necessary to be a Certified Public Accountant.

According to ZipRecruiter, the average salary is about $68,000 annually for a basic accounting job. Experienced accounts, including those with a CPA, can earn $100,000 or more a year. The average senior accountant makes about $84,000 a year.

The Remote Experience

Many experienced accountants moved into their own homes during the Covid pandemic. They realized that they enjoyed the remote work in the comfort of their own surroundings. They also understood how easy it is to practice their profession from any location, as long as they had internet and phone communications. Many people, including accounting personnel, took advantage of the opportunity to travel when it became safe to leave home.

Travelers, including accountants, discovered that the cost of living was much less in other countries. They could live well on their current pay, or even less, in some countries.  Many companies are content to keep remote workers in any location on the payroll as long as they do the job.

Where do You Want to Live?

At least 34 countries offer special Digital Nomad visas. These special visas are generally good for a year, and they can be extended. Germany, Norway, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal are a few of the European countries offering these special visas. Extended visas can be applied for in most European Union or Schengen countries if you wish to stay for more than 90 days, or if you want to travel while you work.

Try Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua, and Dominica among other beautiful Caribbean islands for remote living and work. Mexico, Panama, and Belize are only three of the many Latin American countries that will welcome digital nomads. Thailand, Indonesia including Bali, Malaysia, and other Asian and Middle East countries also welcome digital nomads.

All countries have some restrictions, and you do have to show proof of income. Mexico has a temporary residence visa for $190 that can be extended for more than one year. The income requirement is only $1,620 a month, making this one of the lowest monthly requirements. Mexico is also home to more than 1.5 million retired US and Canadian citizens, some of whom work remotely.

Panama requires an income of only $36,000 a year. The visa costs $300, and it is good for nine to 18 months. Greece offers a visa for 75 Euros that can be extended for three years to people who can show they earn 3,500 Euros a month.

Abu Dhabi requires a monthly income of $3,500 a month with an annual visa that costs $287.  Malaysia requires an annual income of  $24,000 with a visa that costs $220 for a year.

All of these countries and more offer a cost of living that is less than the US, along with a rich cultural experience. This is an opportunity for accountants to live aboard and explore the world!

As the way we work in the 21st century continues to evolve, the rise of digital nomads is becoming increasingly evident. According to the WYSE Travel Confederation, the number of digital nomads on a global scale is expected to exceed 40 million by the end of 2023, with projections indicating a potential rise to around 60 million by 2030. This transformative shift in the workforce landscape opens up new investment opportunities, particularly in companies that support the digital nomad lifestyle.

The media, insights, and marketing platform Skift reported that the year 2023 witnessed a remarkable influx of investment in the travel sector, with startups raising at least $3.7 billion. More than 200 travel startups received funding, reflecting the sector’s dynamic growth. Particularly noteworthy is the short-term rental sector, which emerged as the most well-funded in 2023. This surge is closely tied to the growth of remote work post-pandemic and a focus on the digital nomad sector. Startups like Berlin-based Habyt are carving out a niche in this market. Habyt, which successfully raised $42.4 million, offers a booking platform catering to the unique needs of digital nomads. This platform includes an array of options such as rentals in hotels, homes, and co-living spaces designed to serve both locals and travelers. The success of such startups underlines the evolving demands of the digital nomad lifestyle and the market’s potential for further expansion.

The rise in digital nomads could also boost certain stocks in the next few years, and we explore three stocks below that could potentially benefit from this trend.

PayPal plays an instrumental role in the digital nomad movement, particularly among small businesses and freelancers. As more services and products move online, the need for digital payment solutions will only intensify. PayPal, with its innovative unbranded payment processing service, is well-positioned to capitalize on this shift. The company’s focus on improving margins in this segment and the fresh perspective brought in by new CEO Alex Chriss add to its appeal as an investment option.

Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL)

Alphabet, primarily known for its advertising prowess, has become indispensable in the remote work ecosystem. Services like Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Drive are integral to the digital nomad lifestyle. The more time individuals spend online, the more Alphabet benefits from ad revenue. Despite facing stiff competition and regulatory challenges, Alphabet’s substantial financial reserves offer the flexibility to adapt and grow in a changing market, making it an attractive investment for the long term.

Microsoft (MSFT)

As a leading player in facilitating remote work, Microsoft is at the forefront of empowering digital nomads. The company’s diverse range of services, including the widely used Teams messaging platform, provides a seamless bridge for remote and in-office collaboration. Beyond just remote work, Microsoft’s advancements in cloud technology and artificial intelligence further cement its position as a robust investment choice. Its strong financial foundation and strategic acquisitions make Microsoft a compelling option for those looking to invest in the digital nomad trend.

In conclusion, the emergence of digital nomads, as underscored by the WYSE Travel Confederation’s report and the surge in related startup investments, is not just a fleeting trend but a fundamental shift in the global workforce and travel sector. This change provides significant opportunities for investors, especially in companies like PayPal, Alphabet, and Microsoft, which are strategically positioned to thrive in this evolving landscape. As the number of digital nomads surges worldwide, these stocks, along with the burgeoning travel startup scene, offer a promising way for investors to tap into the potential of this growing market segment.
