Imagine if you could sit down to a perfect plate of cacio pepe pasta, eat gelato, drink the finest of Italian wine, and walk in the footsteps of gladiators, emperors, and fashionistas, all before taking your daily afternoon Italian espresso in a sunny piazza. This dream can now be yours as Italy has officially launched a digital nomad visa as of April 4, 2024!

Before we go any further, we have to bring up the bad news – getting your Italian visa is not going to be easy and there will be several hoops to jump through. Not only will you need to show an annual income of at least three times the minimum level required for exemption from participation in Italian healthcare, around €28,000, but you will also need to buy an international healthcare plan for the one year that the visa covers. In addition, you will need to prove that you have been a digital worker for at least six months previously and show that you have suitable accommodation for the entire year of your stay.

Before any visa is granted, you will also need to prove that you have not been convicted of a crime within the last five years and go to a valid Italian consulate and submit a declaration signed by their employer. The final hurdle? In order to obtain your visa, the Italian taxation office will need to speak to their equivalent in your country to ensure that you are tax-compliant.

Bottom line: in order to eat delicious Italian food on a daily basis, you are going to have to work for it! The great news is that Italy’s digital nomad visa is renewable and you can also bring your family, provided that you can get an all clear from Italy’s police headquarters.

Malta's Digital Nomad Visa Among the Best in Europe - Here's How To Apply

Not sure if you’ll be able to clear all of the bureaucratic hurdles and make Italy your new home? Have no fear—there are a number of other options in Europe that may be less of a headache.

While Spain also requires a lot of documents, they will let you apply directly from Spain and do not require proof of 12 months of accommodation, though requirements around proof of employment and payment of home country social security payments can be burdensome.

Greece offers another option. While it requires a higher monthly income of €3,200 per month and proof of accommodation, insurance, and a declaration letter from your employer, it also offers a 50% tax reduction program that you can apply for when you stay in Greece for a minimum of two years.

Malta just might be the easiest, with an income requirement of only €2,700 per month, an exemption from personal taxation for the one-year of visa validity, and English being one of Malta’s official languages. However, you will still need to show proof of accommodation, insurance, and provide a letter from your employer.

While there are now a number of countries in Europe for digital nomads to call home, if Italy has always been your dream, then you can now make it a reality! It might be best to just hire a lawyer to help you clear the bureaucratic hurdles! Trust us, that pasta is going to taste even better when you know you did your part to earn it! As the Italians say, In bocca al lupo – good luck!

Welcome to the digital nomad visa family, South Africa! As of March 28, 2024, South Africa officially became the fourth African country to offer a digital nomad visa.

This latest entrant into the digital nomad visa fold, however, does not come without controversy. Draft regulations to South African Immigration Regulations were submitted to the public for feedback in February, but the finalized amendments that went into effect ended up being identical to the draft regulations. This prompted criticism that the Minister of Home Affairs did not take any public commentary into consideration.

The new South African digital nomad visa, categorized as a visitor visa, may be issued for up to three years provided that the applicant works for a foreign employer and makes a minimum of ZAR 1 million ($53,600).

Critics of the new visa take issue with the fact that visa holders would not have to register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) if their visa is for a period of less than six months within one year. Because this tax exemption is not covered under the current Income Tax Act (ITA), the law would need to be updated, prompting even more legal headaches.

south africa

Other issues include the treatment of digital nomads’ software products. Under new amendments to the South African Copyright Bill, universities and other institutions could copy software without paying the creators of these products. Finally, it remains unclear whether freelancers can apply for the digital nomad visa and whether the minimum annual salary requirement of ZAR 1 million is a net or gross amount. These are all important concerns and it seems that none of them were taken into account between the draft and the final laws put into effect.

Other Countries in Africa Offering Digital Nomad Visa

If South Africa’s new digital nomad visa issues seem like a lot to unpack or the required salary sounds too high, digital nomad visas from three other African countries are also available.

Cape Verde is the easiest digital nomad visa gateway to Africa, only requiring proof of a $1500 bank balance for the last six months along with passport and insurance documentation.

Mauritius, on the other hand, requires that applicants earn $1500 per month and come from a list of 114 countries.

Namibia is the third African country to offer a digital nomad visa, but you can only stay for six months and will need to earn $2,000 per month.

With 54 countries in Africa and only four that currently have digital nomad visas, the continent of Africa is just getting started on the digital nomad scene but is sure to offer much more in the future. No matter which African country you choose, as we have seen with the concerns raised with the South African visa, it is important to do your homework and check with a tax representative to ensure that you are complying with the requirements and prepared for the implications of moving to a new country! And finally, we wonder: which African country will be next to welcome digital nomads?

How much is a digital nomad visa worth to you? In South Korea, it will not only require you to be an employee with a contract but also earn roughly the equivalent of USD 5,333 per month. This high income requirement has doused the fire of initial excitement that many Koreaphiles felt for South Korea’s new F-1-D Workation Visa that launched in January. In the first months of 2024, only 31 people have officially applied.

So much for “If you build it, they will come.” Why even build it if you’re going to keep the doors locked? Japan, which just launched its digital nomad visa program, also has strict income requirements, asking applicants to earn about $5,530 per month. It is too early to gauge how popular Japan’s program will be, though it would not be surprising to see similar results to its East Asian neighbor.

Jeju Island – South Korea

Due to lower average incomes in other parts of the world, the required monthly salary to apply for a digital nomad visa is much lower.  According to Freelancermap, in Finland, you only need to make 25% of the Korean requirements – $1,315 per month. In Spain, you need roughly 2,500 per month, and in flashy Dubai, you only need to make $3,500 per month, all considerably cheaper than South Korea.

The high income requirements imposed by South Korea make one question the ultimate value of jumping through the hoops to get a workation visa. If the F-1-D only grants you one year in the country, with the option to extend for two, would it be better to stay for three 90-day stints in the country if you won’t receive any questions for doing so? Sure, you can’t register a phone number or buy tickets online without a resident card in South Korea, but is that really worth being required to work on an employment contract and maintain a certain salary to live there for the full year?

The UK may have a better solution for attracting remote workers: make them feel at home with only a stamp in their passport. In December 2023, they updated their immigration policy. Travelers to the UK can now work remotely, provided it’s not the main reason for their visit. The remote work includes taking business calls, participating in remote meetings, and email correspondence.

Busan – South Korea

In the end, South Korea may attract more tourist dollars by doing away with the workation visa altogether. Would it be better to extend the period of stay to six months for visitors and relax the rules around remote work? We will just have to wait and see what the South Korean government decides after it analyzes the data.

For the freelancers working online who dream of living there, the land of cosmetics, K-pop, and kimchi will have to wait…for now.

If you’ve been following recent trends in Portugal, you may have noticed a common theme: digital nomads being blamed for the increase in the cost of living across the country, particularly in Lisbon and Porto.

The impact of the digital nomads is seen as twofold: not only have they been welcomed in through various tax incentives including the Non-Habitual Residence (NHR) program, allowing them to pay lower tax rates than the locals, but they have also helped to drive up the rent prices in Lisbon by more than 37% in 2022 alone, according to the Portugal News. Add in the fact that high-wealth individuals, some of whom also continue to work remotely, were able to buy property in Portugal’s two largest cities in exchange for golden visas from 2011-2022, and it’s easy to point the finger at digital nomads for higher prices. But are they really to blame?

According to Politico, 16,000 digital nomads were living in Lisbon last year, a city with a population of 3 million in 2023. This is roughly .5% of total Lisbon residents. Digital nomads, according to Gonçalo Hall, comprise only .1% of the total tourism numbers in Portugal, which also reached record numbers in 2023 with 30 million visitors to the country, as reported by the European Travel Information and Authorization System.

Digital Nomad Hype In Portugal Causing Youth Exodus From The Country

In the meantime, open EU borders allow local Portuguese to become nomadic themselves and go where they can be paid best. They may get location-based work in other EU countries or find remote work and choose to work around the world. At the same time, EU citizens looking for better weather and the chance to live near the beach can move to Portugal with very little paperwork, and many could qualify for the reduced NHR tax rate before this tax benefit closed at the end of 2023.

For example, although German citizens are paid in the same currency, the fact that German wages are much higher allow Germans to afford higher rent in Lisbon, and landlords are happy to charge higher rents if there are no legal controls against it. In fact, it was only recently, in 2023, that the Portuguese government moved to put in rent increase controls, but this only applied to new lease contracts that succeeded contracts signed in the last five years. New housing going up for rent or those being leased for the first time can be set to any rent that the landlord chooses.

When you travel around Lisbon in 2024, what becomes immediately apparent is the number of abandoned buildings right next door to new construction. Seemingly half of central Lisbon is under construction, but often the sign under the new construction promises expensive new apartments or fancy hotels, not any place that a hard-working middle-class Portuguese family could afford.

It’s easy to blame digital nomads for a cost of living crisis that stems from a whole range of issues.

If you want to keep the Portuguese in Portugal, start with using a portion of the money coming from tourism to increase the local wages, cap more of the rents, and give landlords incentives to rent to people with Portugal-based employers. Only then can the tide truly start to turn.

Working remotely and dreaming of moving to another country? There’s a world of opportunity out there if you know where to look—and, depending on your citizenship, you may not even need to pay any taxes.

Digital nomad visas are now available in more than 60 countries around the world, and, for many remote workers, these visas are the easiest way to legally reside in a country if you meet the requirements. Most digital nomad visas offer the chance to stay for up to one year, with many offering the chance to extend your stay if you continue to meet income requirements and pay for your own private medical insurance.

When it comes to choosing the best digital nomad visa, the sweet spot is finding one that also exempts you from paying taxes. After comparing a wide range of digital nomad visas, we’ve identified five digital nomad visas in 2024 that stand out for their appealing combination of beautiful nature, cheap application fees, and, most importantly, zero taxes: Georgia, Anguilla, Bermuda, Croatia, and Costa Rica.

Anguilla

Have you always wanted to live the island life? Half a world away from Georgia, Anguilla, a British territory in the Caribbean, gives digital nomad visa holders the chance to start their day with a walk on the beach before…doing nothing at all. That’s right, Anguilla has no income requirements and won’t make you pay any taxes while you are on its 12-month digital nomad visa.

All you need to provide is your passport, birth certificate, and a description of the work you will be doing while you are in Anguilla. The one catch? You will need to pay a one-time $2000 entry fee and pay even more if you want to bring family members. The cost of living also isn’t so cheap. Despite the simple visa application requirements, the high fee may be a deal-breaker.

Bermuda

If the costs of applying for the digital nomad visa in Anguilla do not sound so enticing, Bermuda may be your island of choice – especially as it is known for its fast internet speeds.

Although it also has a high cost of living, it has one of the lowest visa application fees in the Caribbean – at only $263. You will need to pay this fee again if you decide to renew your visa after one year. Like Anguilla, Bermuda has no income requirements and won’t make you pay any taxes. You only need to show a clean criminal record, a passport, and proof of employment to enter an educational institution. Bermuda will also offer you a sweet bonus of a $200 customs allowance each time you enter the country.

Croatia

Croatia To Launch Digital Nomad Village With €520 Monthly Apartment Rentals

Moving back over to Europe, Croatia presents an intriguing mix of history and culture with a lower cost of living compared to many of its European neighbors. It also became part of the Schengen Zone at the beginning of 2023, making travel to other European countries much easier.

The income requirement is $2,500 per month or you can prove that you have $31,000 in savings. The digital nomad visa is good for 12 months and will not require to pay any taxes if you earn your income from a non-Croatian company. However, once the 12 months run out, you will need to leave the country and wait six months before you can reapply for the visa. In other words, stay for 12 months and then it may be time to apply for a new country’s digital nomad visa.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica Introduces Innovative Workstation Tailored For Digital Nomads

Similar to Croatia, Costa Rica will not require you to pay any taxes for 12 months on your income if you earn it from a company outside of the country. The income requirements, however, are higher at $3,000 per month, and this must be earned consistently.

This may require setting up a company from which you will be able to pay yourself. The visa application fee is only $100 and the cost of living is slightly lower than its neighbors in the Caribbean. For the incredible biodiversity, surfing opportunities, and security within the country, it might be well worth the effort!

Georgia

The word about Georgia is spreading amongst the digital nomad community, and it offers one of the most generous immigration policies in the world. Ninety-eight different countries can stay in Georgia for one year without a visa.

In order to meet the digital nomad requirements, you will need to prove that you make at least $2000 per month. Alternatively, you can show that you have $24,000 in your bank account. If you move to Georgia, you won’t be subject to any taxes for the first 180 days. After that, the top tax rate is 20% and if you receive “Small Business Status,” you will only be responsible for 1% tax for if you earn less than $184,000 per year. Georgia’s capital, Tbisili, is a dynamic, efficient place to do business and the surrounding wine country of Signagi and mountain towns such as Kazbegi provide great places to escape into nature.

With remote work opportunities surging, living as a digital nomad is becoming a popular lifestyle choice for many people but comes with its unique travel challenges.

The type of passport that you hold can have a big effect on your ease of travel. For example, some passports allow you to enter up to 194 countries visa-free, and some as low as 30. In this article, we’ll explore which passport is the best aka strongest for digital nomads.

To help determine the relative strength of a passport, different rating systems have been used.

Henley Passport Index

Since 2005, the Henley Passport Index has given the highest passport ratings to countries that allow their citizens to cross borders without requiring a visa. Points are also granted if passport holders receive a visa on arrival, electronic travel authority, or a visitor’s permit.

After checking the most recent data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), six countries with visa-free access to 194 countries were awarded 1st place in 2024: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain. But is visa-free access to countries the only thing to compare when ranking the best passports?

Nomad Passport Index

The Nomad Capitalist created the Nomad Passport Index in 2017, and five components make up the total index score. Visa-free travel comprises 50%, taxation (20%), personal freedom (10%), global perception (10%), and the ability to hold dual citizenship receives 10%. After these additional factors were considered, one country emerged as the winner: Switzerland.

“With Switzerland standing out as the world’s best passport in 2024, our Nomad Passport Index shows global citizens how to open their lives to new opportunities, enhancing their freedom to travel, work, and do business with peace of mind in a volatile world,” says Natalia Rincón, Nomad Capitalist researches

Europe fared well overall, taking 8 of the top 10 spots on the Nomad Passport Index. Ireland and Portugal came in second and third, respectively, followed by Luxembourg and Finland. The UAE, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, and New Zealand rounded up the Top 10, with all of these countries providing excellent options for both visa-free travel and a good reputation on the global scene.

Not only is Switzerland in the heart of Europe and considered one of the safest countries in the world, according to the Berkshire Hathaway State of Travel Insurance report but it is also blessed with beautiful nature and a high standard of living—all fantastic things to take into consideration when considering citizenship. The U.S. News and World Report also placed Switzerland atop its rankings of best countries in the world in 2023, citing its low corruption, safety, and economic stability.

Consider Obtaining A Stronger Passport

If you don’t yet hold a strong passport, it may be worth considering how to obtain one through a digital nomad visa route, such as those offered by Spain and Portugal, or a golden visa, which, in Portugal’s case, requires a financial investment in the arts or Portugal’s cultural heritage starting at around 200,000 €.

Whether we like it or not, the passport we hold matters when it comes to feeling a sense of global freedom and opportunity. For 2024, Switzerland, with its blend of stunning vistas, security, strong currency, and visa-free opportunities, is the best passport to hold for digital nomads.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed our work habits forever, ushering in an era where remote or hybrid working models are increasingly becoming the norm. This huge shift in where work is expected to occur prompts a pivotal question: where are the best places to work remotely?

The 2023 Global Remote Work Index, an extensive study conducted by cybersecurity firm Nordlayer, offers some insights.

Analyzing data from 108 countries, the report evaluates them across various parameters including healthcare, socio-economic factors, human rights protections, and internet stability.

The findings reveal an obvious trend, with Europe emerging as a leading destination for remote workers and taking all of the Top 10 positions.

Denmark stands out as the overall leader when considering factors such as social and economic security, digital and physical infrastructure, and cyber safety. This may not come as a surprise as Denmark also frequently tops the list of happiest countries on Earth in various indices over the last several years. Despite its high living costs and expensive internet, Denmark’s excellent internet quality, social inclusion, and healthcare services propel it to the top of the list.

Following closely are the Netherlands and Germany, each distinguished by their unique strengths. The Netherlands excels in personal rights, inclusivity, and social safety, while Germany boasts a robust legal system and the most affordable internet in addition to high economic security for remote workers.

Portugal presents a unique case. Ranking sixth overall, it offers a more affordable cost of living compared to its European counterparts. This positions Portugal as an attractive option for remote workers seeking value for money.

Related: 34 Best DIGITAL NOMAD VISAS Offered by Countries

Interestingly, the study notes that while European nations dominate the top ranks, they often lag in digital infrastructure compared to Asian countries. Singapore, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates lead in this category, although their overall positions in the index are lower. This discrepancy highlights the diverse priorities and values across different regions.

The report also sheds light on countries that excel in economic security for remote workers. Nations like the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and Spain lead in this aspect, along with other countries like Malta. This also points to the reason why many digital nomads hail from these countries.

The European dominance in the index is notable, but it’s important to recognize the varying priorities of individuals when choosing a remote work location. Factors such as cost of living, internet affordability, and social benefits play significant roles in these decisions. One factor not mentioned in the index but also important for remote workers looking to save on transportation costs is the walkability of a city. Getting from one place to another quickly and cheaply often results in increased satisfaction among residents.

Overall, the 2023 Global Remote Work Index provides a comprehensive overview of the best places for remote work, considering a multitude of factors. It underscores the impact of the pandemic on our work habits and highlights the evolving nature of the global workforce. As remote work continues to be a significant aspect of our professional lives, understanding these dynamics becomes crucial for both individuals and organizations navigating this new normal.

“Nothing is certain except death and taxes” – even for digital nomads. Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote is, unfortunately, true no matter which country you live in, but it’s another level of reality if you are from the United States. Navigating the ever-changing world of taxes as a digital nomad can get tricky, especially for business owners, but there can also be benefits and tax breaks when you move abroad.

Moving across states in the U.S. usually means immediate residency establishment for business owners. This process involves transferring your business to the new state. Relocating to another country, however, doesn’t necessarily complicate your U.S. business affairs. Many countries are indifferent to you running a U.S. business while residing overseas. They might even offer enticing digital nomad visas. However, living abroad doesn’t free you from filing and paying U.S. taxes. Here are key tax implications for U.S. business owners moving abroad:

Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE)

If you become a resident of another country or spend over 330 days outside the U.S., you could qualify for FEIE. This benefit can make up to $120,000 of your 2023 income non-taxable abroad. It applies to “earned income,” which includes W2 wages but not S-corp income or dividends. Note that the FEIE doesn’t cover self-employment taxes, so you might still owe taxes if your income is below the exclusion threshold. In some cases, the requirement to pay self-employment tax may be excludable, but this usually requires proof that you are paying for medical insurance and social security in your new country of residence. Please check with an accountant to be sure.

Foreign Housing Allowance

Besides FEIE, you might also qualify for this, which allows an additional 30% exclusion. Note that this exclusion is usually only applicable if you are earning W-2 wages and are paying for your own housing. In 2023, this could mean around $156,000 of tax-free income. This amount can increase if you live in a city with a higher living cost than the U.S. average.

Foreign Business Considerations

Starting a business abroad involves complex tax implications for U.S. citizens. It requires multiple forms with your tax return, and failing to file them can lead to significant penalties. Engaging with international tax strategists and accountants is vital in this scenario, especially if your earnings exceed $500,000 annually.

FinCEN Requirements

Opening a local bank account abroad necessitates filing Form 114 with the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). This is only required if the balances of all of your foreign bank or investment accounts add up to $10,000 at any point in the year. This form is straightforward and available online. FinCEN threatens large penalties for those who fail to file this form but exceed the $10,000 limit.

Foreign Tax Credits

Tax residency in a foreign country often leads to local tax obligations. The IRS offers credits for taxes paid abroad. For instance, if the local tax rate is 20% and the U.S. rate is 40%, you’ll owe the 20% difference to the IRS. Conversely, if the local rate is higher than the U.S. rate, you won’t owe the IRS but also won’t get a refund on the difference. Hence, avoiding local taxation can be beneficial.

Residency in Country With 0% Tax From Foreign Income

In countries like Panama, Paraguay, and Georgia, digital nomads often benefit from favorable tax rates on foreign income.

For instance, Panama offers a territorial tax system, meaning income earned outside of Panama is not taxed.

Paraguay attracts digital nomads due to its low taxes on foreign-sourced income. Non-residents pay 0% while Paraguayan residents are subject to 10% on your worldwide income.

Georgia also provides attractive tax regimes for foreign entrepreneurs, with Georgia having a flat tax rate of 1% for revenues up to 500,000 Georgian Lari (GEL) (about $187,000) and 3% above this amount. For micro-businesses with income up to 30,000 GEL (just over $11,000), the rate is 0%.

Moving abroad as a U.S. citizen can yield significant tax advantages, like the FEIE and Foreign Housing Allowance, which can result in over $156,000 of tax-free income. However, it’s essential to understand the filing requirements, such as the Form 114 for foreign bank accounts, and the tax treaties in place in your resident country. Please have a consultation with your accountant to navigate these tax benefits effectively before moving abroad.

As the way we work in the 21st century continues to evolve, the rise of digital nomads is becoming increasingly evident. According to the WYSE Travel Confederation, the number of digital nomads on a global scale is expected to exceed 40 million by the end of 2023, with projections indicating a potential rise to around 60 million by 2030. This transformative shift in the workforce landscape opens up new investment opportunities, particularly in companies that support the digital nomad lifestyle.

The media, insights, and marketing platform Skift reported that the year 2023 witnessed a remarkable influx of investment in the travel sector, with startups raising at least $3.7 billion. More than 200 travel startups received funding, reflecting the sector’s dynamic growth. Particularly noteworthy is the short-term rental sector, which emerged as the most well-funded in 2023. This surge is closely tied to the growth of remote work post-pandemic and a focus on the digital nomad sector. Startups like Berlin-based Habyt are carving out a niche in this market. Habyt, which successfully raised $42.4 million, offers a booking platform catering to the unique needs of digital nomads. This platform includes an array of options such as rentals in hotels, homes, and co-living spaces designed to serve both locals and travelers. The success of such startups underlines the evolving demands of the digital nomad lifestyle and the market’s potential for further expansion.

The rise in digital nomads could also boost certain stocks in the next few years, and we explore three stocks below that could potentially benefit from this trend.

The Millionaire Market Of The Digital Nomads

PayPal (PYPL)

PayPal plays an instrumental role in the digital nomad movement, particularly among small businesses and freelancers. As more services and products move online, the need for digital payment solutions will only intensify. PayPal, with its innovative unbranded payment processing service, is well-positioned to capitalize on this shift. The company’s focus on improving margins in this segment and the fresh perspective brought in by new CEO Alex Chriss add to its appeal as an investment option.

Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL)

Alphabet, primarily known for its advertising prowess, has become indispensable in the remote work ecosystem. Services like Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Drive are integral to the digital nomad lifestyle. The more time individuals spend online, the more Alphabet benefits from ad revenue. Despite facing stiff competition and regulatory challenges, Alphabet’s substantial financial reserves offer the flexibility to adapt and grow in a changing market, making it an attractive investment for the long term.

Microsoft (MSFT)

As a leading player in facilitating remote work, Microsoft is at the forefront of empowering digital nomads. The company’s diverse range of services, including the widely used Teams messaging platform, provides a seamless bridge for remote and in-office collaboration. Beyond just remote work, Microsoft’s advancements in cloud technology and artificial intelligence further cement its position as a robust investment choice. Its strong financial foundation and strategic acquisitions make Microsoft a compelling option for those looking to invest in the digital nomad trend.

In conclusion, the emergence of digital nomads, as underscored by the WYSE Travel Confederation’s report and the surge in related startup investments, is not just a fleeting trend but a fundamental shift in the global workforce and travel sector. This change provides significant opportunities for investors, especially in companies like PayPal, Alphabet, and Microsoft, which are strategically positioned to thrive in this evolving landscape. As the number of digital nomads surges worldwide, these stocks, along with the burgeoning travel startup scene, offer a promising way for investors to tap into the potential of this growing market segment.
