For years, tourists around the world have taken to social media to denounce the rather awful treatment they receive at Mexican airports. But now things have worsened.

With more than 500 operations between arrivals and departures, Cancun International Airport is receiving over 20 daily complaints regarding mistreatment and delays, according to REPORTUR.mx.

Common complaints include extreme wait times at immigration checkpoints (more than 2 hours), a lack of officials to process documents, missing connections and shuttle services, low-quality internet, and even extorsions perpetrated by immigration officers, according to local news outlet El Economista.

Fed up with the mistreatment of their customers, The Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres sent a letter to Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco, expressing “great concerns from the Quintana Roo hotel sector” regarding “situations” experienced by a rising number of travelers at Cancun International Airport, said President Jesús Almaguer in February.

“We continue to have an increase in complaints from United States and Latin American tourists upon entering the Cancun International Airport migration area. They’ve informed us about the lack of migration officials, exaggerated times to cross the filters, and even more worrisome, the mistreatment of the Colombian market by immigration agents, reads the letter

Cancun International Airport Set For Major $24.4B Expansion And Renovation

Juan Enrique Suárez Del Real Tostado, President of the Union of Tourism Secretaries (Asetur), stated they are closely monitoring the mistreatment tourists have suffered at the hands of immigration officials. He said he’d escalate matters to the Ministry of Interior to expose these facts.

“We have to give [tourists] adequate treatment. We understand that sometimes the work is so routine that it can generate a situation where we forget to provide that attention, but we are going to propose a precise system of immigration training.”

According to Suárez, airport officials have to “understand how much tourism means, but above all, the image they can generate,” he said.

But that can be a little bit late. 73 out of 115 reviews on TripAdvisor, rank Cancun International Airport as “Terrible.

A family traveling on March 2024 said: “unorganised and long queue, not the best start to the holiday, luckily the rest of the trip made up for it…”

A group of friends also traveling in March 2024, said there were no parking slots available so they had to wait almost one hour to get off the plane: “Fourty five minute wait on the tarmac to get a gate, then 1hr to get through immigration. Emerge from baggage pick up to find a place to wait for friends arriving on a different flight. No place to sit down for however long it takes for our friends to emerge. No regard whatever for the comfort of travellers by the airport authority.”

Another family also complained about the excessive wait times at immigration: “Took us 2 hours to get through passport control, taking them initially 45 minutes to even bother putting people on the gates! A near further hour to then get through customs. Complete mayhem from start to finish, the worst airport I’ve ever passed through.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama has reportedly met with federal and state authorities, hotel associations and the Southeast Airport Group (ASUR) to define steps that allow them to control security and streamline the entrance of tourists at immigration checkpoints, REPORTUR.mx revealed.

Barcelona is the latest European city to increase its tourist tax in 2024, in an attempt to reduce and control overtourism, at least that’s what authorities say.

This Spanish city is a highly sought-after tourist destination due to its, renowned architecture, outstanding nightlife, and sunny beaches.

But now, depending on your accommodation type, you may end up paying some $50 extra per week’s stay, as the city raised the fee for its two tourist taxes. The city and the regional one.

Starting April 1, the city tax will set you back €3,25 per night for a maximum of 7 days. This applies to all types of accommodations.

For its part, the regional tax price is accommodation-dependent.

This way, those staying at Airbnb-type accommodations will have to fork out “€2.75 per night; €1.70 for four-star hotels, and €3.50 for five-star hotels.”

On the other hand, cruise travelers are compelled to pay €3 if visiting for less than 12 hours or €2 if staying longer.

As a result, those booking five-star hotels or glamping will have to pay a total of €47.25 per 7-day stay.

Authorities expect to collect over €100 million in tourist taxes to invest them in infrastructure and other needs.

These European cities/countries are charging tourists to visit their territories. Keep in mind that these fees may change depending on the season or the city you are visiting.

  • Brussels: $5, but it may be different in other cities.
  • Prague: $2.
  • France: Depending on your hotel, you should pay from $3 to $17.
  • Berlin: 5% of your accommodation price.
  • Greece:  Up to $5, depending on your accommodation price.
  • Iceland: $4 for hotels, $2 for campsites, and $7 for cruises.
  • Venice: $5.50.
  • Italy: Between $1 and $8, depending on the municipality you stay in.
  • Portugal: Around $2 per night in most of the country.
  • Amsterdam: 7% of your accommodation price plus €3 more per night.
  • Switzerland: Between $2.30 and $8, depending on the city you’re visiting.

South Africa is open to tourists from all countries but foreign visitors need to bring a certificate of a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours prior to their arrival, otherwise, they have to pay to get tested on-site and wait for a negative result.

Travelers found positive after screenings or testing at the airport will need to go into quarantine for 10 days.

Many countries have suspended travel operations with South Africa and/or travelers who have been to South Africa recently so it can be difficult for foreigners to find a flight back home. Within the country restrictions are being lifted following a descent in the number of cases.

July 5 – South Africa likely to extend travel restrictions on July 11 due to a “significant rise in Covid-19 cases”

Due to a new rise in coronavirus infection rate, South Africa might extend its adjusted level 4 regulations on July 11, warned Economists at the Bureau for Economic Research (BER), earlier today.

According to data collected by the group, South Africa saw more than 24,000 new infections only on Friday and Saturday, reads a research note issued on July 5.

“Unfortunately, given the progression of the third wave since the measures were announced, we think it is likely that most, if not all, of the current restrictions will be extended.”

The country was moved to a level 4 lockdown at the end of June and it might remain like this until the end of July.

June 12 – South Africa extended the State of Disaster through July 15

South Africa approved the extension of the national state of disaster through July 15 2021, said acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni at a press conference on Thursday.

The government has utilized the State of Disaster Act to enforce a variety of lockdown restrictions to contain the spread of the Covid-19 infections.

The latest extension follows an increase in positive patients nationwide. Only on Wednesday, the country reported 8,881 new cases.

“The extension enables SA to continue with the non-pharmaceutical interventions against Covid-19, whilst also vaccinating the population”.

May 30 – South Africans will be welcome back to the Seychelles from June 1

Most countries worldwide have banned tourists from South Africa due to concerns linked to the so-called South African COVID-19 variant that appears to spread more easily than the others. Also, because vaccines might be somewhat less effective against the virus.

But after a 5-month ban, the Seychelles is ready to accept South African travelers back as part of their economic recovery plan. Visitors are not required to be vaccinated or undergo mandatory quarantine.

On the other hand, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic will not resume flights with South Africa at the beginning of June as it was scheduled. Virgin Atlantic now plans to start flights on 10 June and British Airways on 23 June.

April 4

As of today, South Africa is the most isolated country in the world. Travel from more than 120 countries has been from partially to totally forbidden. Multiple airlines have reportedly refused to accept South African passport holders.

These massive travel bans have had a devastating impact on the country’s tourism and other industries. And while the world expects to see a country implementing severe restrictions to try to contain the spread of the so called South African variant, the country has instead started to ease restrictions.

For the current holidays, South Africa has decided to ease restrictions on indoor religious gatherings. As of yet, up to 250 people can get together for indoor religious services and up to 500 outdoors.

March 13

While restrictions tighten outside its borders, South Africa has decided to ease some of the harsher measures imposed to contain the virus. Curfews have been reduced, businesses are reopening and public and private gatherings are allowed again.

Foreign governments will likely continue to extend their travel bans on flights originating in the African country until the variant B.1.351 is no longer a case of concern.

The Government of South Africa is confident that an aggressive vaccination plan and basic biosafety measures will help the nation out of this crisis.

After a setback in their early vaccination rollouts the country is finally catching up. So far they have reported 138,014 administered doses among their healthcare professionals. Next in line are elderly residents and at-risk individuals. (Source)

Yes. All visitors are currently welcomed, including American tourists.

Tourism in South Africa

The country implemented strong lockdown measures, only to lift them in July 2020, which is believed to be responsible for the country’s surge in COVID-19 cases.

Indeed, many tourism attractions opened immediately after the country’s lockdown was lifted. This includes common outdoor attractions like parks and beaches.

Many tourism-related industries have shifted their focus from international to internal tourism. This has proven to be a somewhat successful effort in some countries, and South Africa is looking to duplicate the success of these nations.

This is being done via the creation of a formal marketing campaign, “It Is Your Country, Enjoy It,” which is geared explicitly towards improving domestic tourism. This is particularly the case for Cape Town, one of the largest international tourist places in the country.

Belize Reopening to Tourism – Latest Update

Belize

July 4 – Belize to enforce new restrictions from July 4 as COVID-19 cases surge continues

The Ministry of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat, is confident that with the adjusted COVID-19 regulations the surge in COVID-19 cases can improve.

“Well again some of the measures we’re gonna be implementing on Sunday we hope will help to ameliorate those situations,” said Chebat in an interview on Wednesday.

The new restrictions will include adjustments to curfew hours, restrictions on church services, restaurants and others.

“I believe we’ll be putting it in the protocols to ensure that we get the 50% capacity. In terms of restaurants we will continue with the 75% capacity for outdoor and 50% for indoor dining but, and here is the change, we will not be allowing dining inside a restaurant that does not have a free flow of air that is not properly ventilated” he added.

June 16 – Belize to welcome back its first fully-vaccinated cruise ship on July 7

As part of its reopening plan, the country will welcome back its first cruise ship in more than a year.

Belize has been praised for its efficient COVID-19 pandemic management which has allowed the country to safely reopen for tourism under a number of requirements.

In order to ensure the safety of these visitors, Belize has demanded that every single one of the passengers and the crew are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Belize has also released a series of protocols that this and future cruise ships should follow from home port to destination and return.

“This is encouraging news for thousands of Belizeans that work in the tourism sector who are looking forward to welcoming cruise guests to our shores once again,” said the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) in a statement.

May 27 – Belize will no longer require visitors to download its health tracking app

Belize has lifted another important travel restriction. Back in March, the country eliminated the negative COVID-19 test requirement for vaccinated travelers who could prove they had received two shots of a vaccine.

Now, according to Belize authorities, travelers no longer need to upload their health records to their health tracking app. Lots of travelers did not feel confident sharing this information with the government and private business.

However, visitors still need to bring proof of full COVID-19 immunization received at least two weeks prior to arrival, a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 96 prior to arrival, or a “negative rapid test (Rapid Antigen, Sofia, SD Biosensor, and ABBOTT) taken within 48 hours of travel.”

May 11 – Belize has just joined the exclusive list of the safest countries in the world according to CDC

With more than 40,000 vaccinated people (10% of its inhabitants) and less than 400 active COVID-19 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recently dropped its travel alert, making it one of the safest countries in the world to visit during COVID.

Back in March, Belize became the first Caribbean country to waive entry restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers. Now visitors can enjoy their natural beauties in a CDC-approved safe environment.

April 22 – Belize is lifting internal restrictions but won’t reopen land borders with Mexico and Guatemala yet

Prime Minister of Belize John Briceno, lifted a series of internal restrictions on April 16. Casinos -which employs hundreds of local people- reopened for business. Additionally, the Corozal Free Zone, the street side vending and other working and tourist activities have been reopened under strict biosecurity measures such as social distancing and mask wearing.

According to Briceno, the Cabinet has talked about the necessity to reopen their land borders with Mexico and Guatemala but they “feel” neither of these countries have taken the pandemic as seriously and effectively as Belize has, and the government wants to keep their figures under control.

What flights to Belize are available during a pandemic?

The Philip Goldson International airport (BZE) is now open but travel to Belize is available by air only. All land borders and sea ports will remain closed until further notice.

COVID-19 cases in Belize

Belize is a very safe country. As of July 4, it has reported 13,343 COVID cases and 330 deaths caused by the virus.

What are the required safety measures for traveling to Belize?

The following stringent safety measures will be required when Belize re-opens:

  • All those entering the country must have taken a Covid-19 test within 72 hours of arriving in Philip Goldson International Airport.
  • Upon arrival, shoes will be sanitized and temperatures checked.
  • Most passengers will have to take an additional test upon arrival. If their results return positive, they must undergo a 14-day mandatory quarantine at their own expense.

These measures are in addition to the common-sense precautions all travelers should be taking such as wearing masks and washing their hands.

Top reasons to visit Belize

Belize is a haven for water sports. You can go deep-sea fishing, sailing, and kayaking. Shark Ray Alley near Ambergris Caye allows you to swim with sharks and rays.

Then, there is scuba diving. The Belize Barrier Reef system is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world. One of its attractions is the Great Blue Hole, which was made famous by Jacques Cousteau.

Belize is also a haven for nature-lovers. There are lush rainforests. The Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary has a jaguar preserve. Visitors here may not see these elusive cats but they will find tapirs, howler monkeys, and tropical birds galore as well as other wildlife.

The Maya mountains provide many hiking trails to climb and lovely waterfalls to swim under.

Zipline tours appeal to adrenaline junkies while cave tubing provides a different type of adventure. Tourists relax on an inner tube as they float through magnificent underground caverns.

History buffs will enjoy visiting the many Mayan ruins. They can learn how to make chocolate the way the Maya did or visit the Belize Spice Farm for a culinary adventure.

The open-air markets in most towns are fun places to shop. Mingling with locals and bargaining are easy because the official language is English and the currency is pegged to the US dollar.

For those who enjoy music, Belize has a unique musical genre thanks to the Garifuna. Their music blends Afro-Caribbean and traditional Mayan influences.

Germany reopening – Latest updates

Germany airport

July 1 – Germany reopened to American tourists on June 25 but demands on U.K. visitors

Last week, German authorities decided to reopen its international borders to fully vaccinated Americans and other non-EU low-risk countries, unless they are visiting from a virus-variant area of concern

Those with travel history to an RKI-designated risk area in the 10 days prior to entry are required to submit a digital registration proving they had an urgent or exceptional need to travel to Germany.

As of today, all visitors six years or older must either submit proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test, or proof of recovery from the virus. Travelers must have received two full series of a vaccine no less than 14 days prior to arrival. (Source: US embassy)

On the other hand, Germany is reportedly demanding EU Member States to ban UK visitors due to the spread of the highly-contagious Delta variant in its territory.

June 12 – Germany started rolling out a digital vaccine passport this week.

Germany enforces some of the strictest domestic COVID-19 restrictions across Europe. Before going out for lunch, staying at a hotel, or working out at a gym, Germans must take a COVID-19 test and produce a negative result.

This week the country started rolling out a new digital vaccine passport named CovPass that will let users download proof of their coronavirus vaccination certificate onto the app.

After receiving a QR code, visitors and locals will be allowed easy access to restaurants, museums or other tourist venues that require proof of immunization.

Health Minister Jens Spahn said that this digital vaccination pass is “an important step for the revival of international tourist travel.”

May 29 – Germany imposed new travel restrictions to U.K. travelers since May 23

The E.U. is finishing up a plan to ease travel within the bloc for those who have been vaccinated, recovered or can produce a negative COVID-19 test. Effective July 1, all EU countries will be required to accept these certificates.

Some EU tourist-dependent countries have moved ahead and reopened their doors to international travelers. But Germany is not one of them. Instead, it has recently imposed a new travel ban to visitors from the U.K., Northern Ireland, and some other countries.

“…There are local outbreaks occurring again, including cases of more infectious variants such as the Indian variant at present. Therefore, to prevent the further spread of the virus, the United Kingdom has been classified as an area of variant of concern with effect from May 23, 2021,” reads the government statement.

So far, Germany has just started to lift some local restrictions. But the date of a broader international reopening has not been announced.

(Source: SchengenVisaInfo News)

May 21 – Schleswig-Holstein is the first German State fully reopening for tourism

After experimenting with small groups of tourists, Germany has fully reopened its northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein for tourism. Bars and restaurants are reopened for both indoor and outdoor dining, and boat trips and other tourist attractions are open for business again.

Rules are still tough. All visitors must bring a COVID-19 negative test, proof of having received two doses of an approved vaccine against COVID-19, and agree to get retested every 3 days.

Also, last Monday the country reopened bars and restaurants nationwide. Again, customers must bring the same certificates or they will be denied service.

April 20 – Germany to unify local and national restrictions to fight the third wave of COVID-19

Germany, as usual, is taking very seriously the third wave of COVID-19 cases they have started to see over the last couple of weeks.

A few days ago, the Cabinet members approved legal changes to grant the federal government enough power to enforce consistent COVID-19 related restrictions over all German states. This means that all regions no matter how big or small they are will need to comply with the new federal laws, now called the “federal emergency brake.”

“We must not ignore the cries for help from the medical profession. They need us,” […] “Our fight against the pandemic needs to be stricter and more resolute,” […] “The nationwide emergency brake is long overdue,” said Chancellor Angela Merkel, while emphasizing that Germany is “approaching the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Countries, areas and territories of “concern”

Germany has changed its color-code classification to new “areas of variant of concern”, “high incidence areas”, “risk areas” and 2 regions that are no longer considered as risk areas.” This list will be effective from June 13 at 00:00.

1. New virus variant areas – areas with a particularly high risk of infection due to the widespread occurrence of certain SARS-CoV-2 virus variants:

  • Portugal (including the autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores) is now considered a virus variant area.
  • The Russian Federation is now considered a virus variant area.

2. New high incidence areas – areas with a particularly high risk of infection due to particularly high incidences for the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus:

  • No new high incidence areas since the last change (see current list below).

3. New simple risk areas – areas with increased SARS-CoV-2 infection risk:

  • Fiji is now considered an easy risk area.
  • Croatia – Zadar County is now considered an easy risk area.
  • Rwanda is now considered a simple risk area.

May 29 – Nepal will reopen to China, Qatar and Turkey from June

Some weeks ago, Nepal closed for international tourism due a huge increase in COVID-19 cases mostly brought to the country by Indian and Nepali cross-country workers and residents.

Since then, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has allowed some controlled charter flights to bring back stranded Nepali citizens.

However, since travel agents started to charge travelers with “exorbitant rates”, the government decided to resume international flights to and from China, Qatar and Turkey from the beginning of June.

“Amid complaints that passengers, mainly Nepalis, were being forced to pay exorbitant fares for chartered flights, we decided to open limited flights,” said Nepal’s Tourism Minister Bhanubhakta Dhakal.

The exact date is yet to be confirmed.

  • Visitors must have proof of a hotel booking for a 7-day quarantine in Nepal.

Why should Nepal be on the travel lover bucket list?

Nepal

Most businesses, stores, restaurants, and hotels have resumed normal operations in the country.

When people think of Nepal, mountain climbing comes to mind. After all, the country boasts 10 of the top 14 peaks in the world.

Yet, there is a lot more to do here than climb mountains. For those of an adventurous bent, they’ll find some of the best white-water rafting in the world. Visitors can also try paragliding, bungee jumping or take a helicopter tour overseeing the mountains.

For those hiking the Annapurna circuit, make sure to bring a camera. This is one of the most breathtaking mountain treks in the world. It not only takes visitors through the Himalayas, but also touches on the Tibetan plateau.

There is also spectacular natural diversity. Because Nepal encompasses such a wide range of altitudes, it has an incredible variety of plant and animal life. Here nature lovers will find the rare snow leopard, the elusive Bengal tiger, and the Himalayan black bear as well as over 800 types of birds, and 300 varieties of orchid.  Many of these wonders can be seen in the national parks.

Kathmandu is also an attraction. It boasts 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Lord Buddha is alleged to have been born in the town of Lumbuni, and this is a pilgrimage site for many Buddhists.

There are also ancient monasteries that are worth visiting, and, in the city itself, there is Durbar Square, which dates back to the 3rd century.

Finally, here in Nepal visitors will find some of the friendliest people in the world.

Nepal is probably one of the most visually gorgeous places to visit. From Mount Everest to the birthplace of the Buddha and the ancient buildings of Kathmandu, there is so much to see and do in this small but stunning country.

The Bahamas reopening – Latest Updates

June 16 – The Bahamas has lifted its lockdowns on Central and North Andros and Cat Island as of June 14

The “Enhanced Local Measures” that forced people on Central and North Andros and Cat Island to remain home at all times except for essential reasons were lifted on June 14.

This does not mean that the pandemic is over on these islands. The strict lockdown measures were replaced with curfews that will run from 18:00 to 05:00 on Central Andros and from 20:00 to 05:00 on Cat Island.

There is still an ongoing concern about the spread of the virus, but epidemiology data show that COVID-19 infections have decreased.

Over the last 3 weeks the country has seen an average of 27 new infections per day which is 23% of the highest peak reported so far.

May 8 – The Bahamas to lift COVID-19 testing for vaccinated visitors

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism decided to lift testing requirements for vaccinated travelers starting today.

Back in May, the country had reopened for international travelers who still needed to bring a negative COVID-19 test result.  As of now, travelers who have been administered two doses of a Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson or AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 can now skip coronavirus testing.

Regardless of vaccination status, the Bahamas still requires visitors aged 18 and older to apply for the Bahamas Travel Health Visa and to opt-in to the country’s COVID-19 health insurance. Additionally, they need to observe a series of biosecurity protocols while on the island, according to the country’s official website.

Dec 18

Starting December 7 visitors to the Bahamas no longer need to quarantine if they wish to embark on inter-island travel. The quarantine has been replaced with proof of negative PCR test results.

However, some islands may be completely out of reach due to their COVID-19 figures. As of today Grand Bahama Island, Nassau & Paradise Island, Abaco, Exuma and Eleuthera have curfews and lockdown measures (meaning traveling in or out of these islands is restricted. Activities within the island are still allowed.)

What are the requirements to be allowed entry to the Bahamas?

  • First thing you need to do is submit your Travel Health Visa Application (you will need to have at hand your negative PCR nasal swab COVID-19 test results)
  • You will need to purchase the islands’ health insurance (USD 40-60 for both)
  • Within 72 hours they will let you know if your application has been approved.
  • Don’t forget to bring your application confirmation and the original PCR test results with you! Airport authorities will check them before boarding your plane and once again after landing in the Bahamas.

For further inquiries call the COVID-19 travel hotline +1 (242) 502 0829 or send a message to healthvisa@bahamas.com

Do visitors need to provide their contact and personal information?

Yes. Through the Travel Health Visa Application.

Do travelers need to quarantine?

No, unless they show COVID-19 symptoms during airport or seaport health screenings. In which case they will be asked to quarantine until they can produce negative COVID-19 test results. These patients can self-isolate at

  • Their own homes
  • Rented accommodations (AirBnB)
  • A hotel room with a private bathroom
  • A private boat
  • Government quarantine facilities (at their own cost)

Are beaches open to the public?

Bahamas-reopening-to-tourists

Yes. They are. However some of them have restrictions on the number of people (groups no bigger than 5 people) and the curfew (if any) set in place for that island.
