Seaweed season 2024 is in full swing in Florida and it’s about to start peaking! Most affected areas are expected to be Key West and the Florida Keys.

April 25, 2024: Florida seaweed forecast: The invasion to start in late May this year

According to the Palm Beach Post, scientists from the University of Florida predict a potentially massive sargassum seaweed invasion in May.

Official seaweed season in the Caribbean has already started but it has been very mild up until the middle of April. Caribbean places such as Cancun, Tulum, and Punta Cana are usually strongly affected and started seeing higher seaweed arrivals only in the past 2 weeks. This delay was most likely caused by lower sea temperatures in the Caribbean this winter.

“Unlike most previous years, total sargassum amount decreased from about 9 million metric tons in February to about 6.5 million metric tons in March,” a report from USF’s Optical Oceanography lab stated earlier this month. “The total amount in March was still above the 75% of all previous March months, indicating 2024 could still be a major sargassum year.” according to scientists.

January 15, 2024: Another record blob of sargassum was measured in the Central Atlantic Ocean

University of South Florida scientists have reported a significant increase in sargassum, a type of seaweed, in the Central Atlantic, near the Caribbean Sea. As of December 2023, the mass of sargassum reached nearly 5 million metric tons, a substantial increase from the 1 million metric tons recorded at the same time in the previous year.

This amount sets a new historical record for the region. Despite a 15% decrease in May 2023, which deviated from the 2022 record high of 22 million metric tons, researchers anticipate 2024 to be another major year for sargassum growth.

Currently, the majority of this seaweed mass is located about 500 miles east of the Caribbean Sea, with significant blooms also observed near Venezuela’s Orinoco River, affecting areas like Trinidad and Tobago and the southern Caribbean Sea.

What’s causing the seaweed problem?

A 2020 study, involving research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has linked the surge in sargassum in the tropical Atlantic Ocean to a shift in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) around 2009-2010.

This change led to stronger west and south winds, which dispersed sargassum from the Sargasso Sea into the tropical Atlantic, where it received more sunlight and nutrients from ocean upwelling.

The longevity of this increased sargassum presence is uncertain, with NOAA’s Rick Lumpkin noting the possibility of a similar event occurring in the past, followed by a decline of the Sargassum belt after several decades.

What could be done? These are possible alternative uses of sargassum heading to Florida, according to a new startup

The surge of sargassum seaweed in recent times has triggered businesses to explore novel methods of eliminating it, and its potential uses are already manifold.

Scientists and entrepreneurs aspire to transform it into syrup, bricks, and conceivably even jet fuel. Carbonwave, an organization based in Boston and Puerto Rico, is utilizing it as a constituent in fertilizer, cosmetics, and even synthetic leather.

REPORTS & UPDATES FROM SEAWEED SEASON 2023

The last sargassum seaweed season was predicted to be devastating and the worst ever. There was 5,000 miles long seaweed belt measured by scientists at Florida University which was heading towards the Caribbean and Florida. Fortunately, in July 2023, the seaweed belt shrunk by 75% and did not pollute the beaches as expected. Therefore, this year is hard to predict!

Sargassum seaweed in Mexico and the Caribbean has been invading the beaches and ruining holiday plans for many travelers in the last few years and it’s not getting and better in 2024.

We have compiled a list of Caribbean beaches that have historically not been affected by the seasonal bloom of sargassum to help you with your travel plans.

Current seaweed situation in the Caribbean in 2024

The 2024 seaweed season has been mild in the Caribbean so far. Most of the places that get invaded every year report less sargassum this season. The reason behind it is most likely the lower sea temperatures this time of the year than usual but that is currently changing and more seaweed arrival is expected.

Seaweed reporting, stay updated

If you still considering vacationing in the area with seaweed and would like to stay up to date with the sargassum situation in those areas, we recommend joining our reporting groups on Facebook:

Eagle, Palm, and Baby Beaches in Aruba

Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island, is known for its fine white sand beaches, opulent resorts, and refreshing breezes. Its well-known beaches, including Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, and Baby Beach, are fortunate to lie outside the hurricane belt and the sargassum seaweed belt.

Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay Beach, another of the most beautiful beaches in the world, offers crystal clear sea waters and incredibly soft sand. This long coastline is especially calm because it is protected by a barrier reef. At Grace Bay Beach, the water bottom is pristine and smooth.

If you are looking for a Caribbean beach without seaweed for a family, couple or group vacation, Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, is unquestionably a place to take into consideration.

Playa Porto Mari on Curacao, Dutch Caribbean

One of Curacao’s most stunning beaches is also one of the most beautiful algae-free beaches in the Caribbean. Playa Porto Mari, a private beach on Curacao’s west coast, charges an entrance fee (visit the Porto Mari website for hours and prices), but the cost also includes access to several amenities.

Morne Rouge Beach on Grenada

On the island of Grenada, there is a stunning, seaweed-free coastline with crystal-clear waters. Although it is less known than Grand Anse Beach and also known as BBC Beach, Morne Rouge is hardly affected by Sargassum algae.

Especially families enjoy swimming here because of the calm sea. If you are looking for a family-friendly Caribbean beach without seaweed, Morne Rouge is an excellent choice.

Grand Anse in St. Georges, Grenada

Sargassum seaweed has not yet invaded Grenada’s beautiful Grande Anse coast. Quite apart from its gorgeous beaches, Grenada is a popular Caribbean destination thanks to its artisanal rum farms, organic bean-to-bar chocolate, and mountains dotted with waterfalls.

Beaches on the Caribbean Side of Colombia

Best beaches in Colombia

The Caribbean coast of Colombia boasts some of the cleanest beaches, especially notable during the seaweed season, where such issues are minimal.

Beaches like Playa Blanca in Barú, the pristine sands of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, and the serene Isla de San Andrés are renowned for their clear waters and well-maintained shores.

These beach spots are ideal for travelers seeking tropical getaways without the common inconveniences of seaweed accumulation, offering perfect spots for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres Sees First Arrival Of Sargassum On its Most Popular Beach

If you really want to go to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, there are still some beaches there that do not have Sargassum algae. Sargassum tides are most likely to hit the exposed eastern coasts, but some beaches, like Playa Norte on the island of Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo, are usually free of seaweed. Much depends on the wind and ocean currents, however.

Secret Beach Belize

Belize is home to many beautiful beaches, but one that stands out from the rest is Secret Beach. As the name suggests, this beach is hidden away from the crowds and is a secluded spot that’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Also, seems this amazing place is a secret to Sargassum as you won’t find it there.

The Secret Beach is not only a perfect place to relax and unwind, but it’s also an ideal spot for water sports enthusiasts. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking are just a few of the activities you can enjoy on this beach.

Little Bay Beach, St. Maarten

Little Bay Beach is typically in pristine condition year-round.

This small island is divided between Dutch and French territories and has 37 beautiful beaches spread over its 34 square miles. Sargassum can occasionally be a problem, especially on the east coast.

Little Bay Beach on the south side of the island, just minutes from the capital city of Philipsburg, is an excellent choice if you are looking for a beach in St. Maarten without seaweed.

Due to its location on a secluded peninsula and the protection provided by rocky outcroppings on both sides, it is rarely affected by sargassum seaweed.

Southern Tip of Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

Although the opulent St. James Club on Antigua’s eastern windward side had to be closed for three months in 2019 because of an enormous surge of Sargassum seaweed, numerous other Antiguan beaches often have no sargassum seaweed.

Located on the southern tip of Antigua, Curtain Bluff Resort is situated on two beaches in a private setting where little seaweed arrives.

The 72-room boutique resort’s amenities include an all-inclusive gourmet restaurant, tennis, squash, sailing, guided snorkeling excursions, and sea kayaking.

Playa PortoMari, Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean

Renowned as a beloved summer getaway, Curacao entices travelers with its stunning beaches and remarkable amenities, and Playa PortoMari stands out among them.

This beach ranks high on the list of popular destinations in Curaçao, celebrated for its vibrant marine ecosystem, well-designed facilities, and captivating natural splendor. Divers are drawn to the awe-inspiring double reef, while snorkelers can trace trails that unveil an array of reef formations teeming with captivating oceanic creatures.

Bloody Bay and Long Bay Beaches in Negril, Jamaica

Hidden Gem of Negril boasts Bloody Bay and Long Bay which are havens of natural beauty, distinguished by its remarkable sargassum seaweed-free beaches.

They are idyllic escapes where beach lovers can revel in crystal-clear waters and powdery sands without the intrusion of the seaweed.

Other Caribbean beaches without sargassum all year round:

  • Bayahibe Beach, Dominican Republic
  • Crane Beach, Barbados
  • Trunk Bay, US Virgin Islands
  • Pigeon Point Beach, Tobago
  • Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda

The resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula is an extremely popular Spring Break destination due to its beautiful beaches, water-based activities and vibrant nightlife. However many visitors don’t realize that although the beaches are picturesque, many of the beaches in Los Cabos are not suitable for swimming.

Because of the Sea of Cortez strong waves and some powerful undercurrent, many of Cabo’s beaches are off-limits to swimmers. But if you are looking for a calm beach with water mild enough for swimmers, here are some of the best swimmable beaches in Los Cabos.

Medano Beach

Considered the main touristy swimming beach in the area, the beach is full of restaurants, vendors, beach lounge rentals and most importantly calm waters to swim in. The area is home to many beach clubs where water sports equipment can also be rented.

Chileno Beach

Located in the hotel zone, this beach is a favorite among locals as it is more of a low-key spot. The calm bay is good for snorkeling and swimming and offers amenities such as palapas, portable restrooms and a nearby restaurant. Easily accessible by bus or cab, snorkelers can spot lobsters, sea urchins and even stingrays in the waters.

Palmilla Beach

This quieter spot is a tad tricky to get to, but its crescent-shaped shore is certainly worth the effort. With plenty of snorkeling and swimming opportunities, the beach offers a few palapas for shade along with rental umbrellas and a few vendors. But due to its remote location, make sure to pack a picnic or a meal as there are no restaurants nearby.

Santa Maria Beach

Probably the most famed snorkeling spot in Los Cabos, the waters below are full of coral reefs to explore. The calm waters are good for swimmers too, but this beach becomes crowded due to its popularity and the fact that tour companies dock there for snorkeling excursions.

Cannery Beaches

Comprised of Coral Negro and Balconcito, Coral Negro and Balconcito arguably may be the best in Los Cabos. Located just outside the marina before you reach Land’s End, this beach features massive boulders along with calm waters. Some visitors use it as a place to snorkel, but it isn’t the best spot, as this beach is great for a day to relax and take a dip in the water.

3 important safety warnings as the waters can be dangerous

  • Take warning flags seriously, do not enter the water when you see a black or red flag
  • When there is stormy weather, it is best to not enter the water
  • If waves break on the beach, this causes a dangerous undertow

Captiva Island is located near Fort Myers off Florida’s Gulf Coast and it’s all about outdoor activities. If you are into biking, sailing, birdwatching, swimming and other water adventures, look no further!

But, if you are more of a slow-traveler looking for leisurely-paced adventures, and don’t want to return home more exhausted than when you left, you probably should consider booking a room at the South Seas Island Resort. It encompasses a beautiful Gulf and 330 acres of natural beauty on the tip of Captiva Island.

Here is a list of the twelve best beaches in Mallorca. The beaches span a range of activities, the most popular ones being sunbathing and swimming.

Suggestion: Best beaches in Spain

1. Cala Mesquida

Cala Mesquida is set on the northeastern shore of Mallorca. It stretches over 300 meters of fine sand and has shallow waters, which makes it especially suitable for families with small kids.

On one side, you will find a nice hotel resort with a café and a restaurant. There are also showers, restrooms, and sun loungers for rent. The right part of the beach is more secluded and nudist.

Are you a sports enthusiast? Try diving, snorkeling, or paddleboarding. There are very few beaches in Mallorca where surfers can catch a wave. With such a vast beach and water opening to the horizon, Cala Mesquida is one of them.

There is free parking above the beach. But we recommend you come early if you want to find a spot, especially during weekends and the peak season.

4. Platja del Portitxolet

Set in a former fishing village just outside of Palma, Platja del Portitxolet is a lovely urban beach with a homey atmosphere. No wonder – it’s often frequented by locals, especially on weekends, who know very well how to enjoy the sun.

There are no sun beds for hire, so make sure to bring your own towel. What this beach has however is a number of trendy seafood restaurants and bars that line the coastline.

Feeling active? The water there is usually calm and perfect for a swim or a little paddleboard ride. You can also cycle along the promenade which leads to Palma.

Note that Platja del Portitxolet can get busy in the summer months, so better arrive early in the morning to reserve your spot there.

5. Caló del Moro

The best time to go swimming here is from May to October as during winter it gets pretty cold. Caló del Moro is also one of the best beaches in Mallorca because it is pretty secluded and therefore doesn’t get crowded.

6. Amarador Beach

The cliffs at this beach also have many steps and natural tunnels where you can also enjoy walking, scuba diving, or snorkeling.

7. Es Trenc Beach

Es Trenc is a beautiful beach located on the southwestern coast of Mallorca. It has a gorgeous scenic environment, like its rocky coastline covered by wild vegetation and grasses. This beach has moderate drainage and is relatively shallow as well.

Es Trenc Beach is also one of the best beaches in Mallorca to enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving because it has a lot of natural elements covered by wild vegetation, making it great for those activities.

Towards the end of the beach, you can see a large arch; it is a great spot to sunbathe and swim. Es Trenc is one of the best beaches in Mallorca because it is pretty secluded, so it usually doesn’t get very crowded.

8. Cala Llombards

Cala Llombards is located southeast of Mallorca and has a pristine fine white sand beach. It has a stunning natural environment. Its long coastline is covered by a few meters of dune grasses; it is excellent for sunbathing, walking along its shores, and enjoying long snorkeling sessions in its clear waters. The water at this beach is quite deep and transparent, so it’s another one of the best beaches in Mallorca to enjoy these activities.

This beach usually has fewer tourists than others in the area, so it is perfect who like to enjoy the seaside on their own.

11. Cala Millor

It is fun to relax on the beach and look at the small boats moored offshore.

After spending the day on the beach, head to Faro de Capdepera, the lighthouse at the easternmost point of the island, to watch the beautiful sunset. The beach is about 10 minutes from Port de Pollenca.

What to do in Mallorca?

Mallorca is a perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Unlike other parts of Europe, Mallorca has not been damaged by World Wars, and therefore many of its attractions are up-to-date and in good condition.

Most of Mallorca’s beaches are clean and scenic. The only thing to be careful about when visiting Mallorca is sunburn as it can develop quickly due to the strong sunlight on the white sand beaches.

It also features a variety of affordable accommodations, clean streets, and great food. Although most people suffer from jet lag while visiting Mallorca, there is still a lot to see and do.

People can visit the old town of Palma and see the cathedral or take a ride on one of the local buses to get a taste of the area. Mallorca is also a safe place to travel for families because it has many activities that children will enjoy, like adventure parks with go-karts or water slides.

The security of Mallorca is strong, and it is an excellent place for families since there is not much violence or danger. There are also many police stations everywhere, so the police can rapidly respond to any emergency. Mallorca has no major terrorist threats.

Mallorca is a safe place even at night and alone; this is due to its low crime rate, especially in Palma. There are some areas of Palma where you should be more cautious because they have higher crime rates and drug trafficking, but the police are monitoring these places so they do not endanger tourists.

Transportation around the island

There are several means of transportation in Mallorca, such as buses, taxis, ferries, and private transfers, that you can book through local travel agencies. It offers convenience to passengers as they can secure the transportation they need before their arrival.

Many people also choose to rent a car when traveling around Mallorca, as it is the easiest and most comfortable way of getting around. Several car rental companies rent cars in Mallorca, such as Alamo, Avis, and Hertz, which one can contact through online booking.

What to pack when going to Mallorca beaches

One must bring sunscreen to protect the skin from getting burnt by the strong sunshine found at the Mallorca beaches. One of the other essential things that you should bring along with you when going to Mallorca beaches is water as they can get pretty hot.

You should also pack footwear to protect the feet from the hot sand and stone found on some parts of Mallorca shores. At some of Mallorca’s beaches, there are small cliffs that have been eroded by the waves, which means that one must pay very close attention while walking on them at all times.

Conclusion

Mallorca is one of the most beautiful and romantic islands in Europe. It also offers a wide variety of tourist options, from beaches to mountains, and is linked to the Mediterranean culture and is full of history. It has beautiful scenery, hotels, and excellent cuisine that allow tourists to have enjoyable holidays in this paradise. The beaches in Mallorca are excellent, especially with the pristine and clear waters that have as many colors as the sea itself.

It can be hard to choose which ones to visit with so many options. That’s why we have listed 10 of the best and most popular Alabama beaches in this article:

Fort Morgan Public Beach

Fort Morgan Public Beach

You and your friends will love the Fort Morgan area as a holiday destination. Gulf Shores has something for everyone, whether you are traveling with your loved one or the whole family.

There are entertainment alternatives for every budget, including an abundance of beautiful public beaches that are either free or inexpensive to visit.

The peninsula of Fort Morgan is home to one of Alabama’s most unique beaches. The historic fort, which was an active military site during several wars is surrounded by shoreline. It’s a little farther out than other beaches but the scenic drive and secluded beach are worth the effort.

Fort Morgan can be made into a full-day excursion by combining a tour of history with time on the beach. The quiet beach, less than an hour from Gulf Shores, is a wonderful alternative to some of the crowded public beaches.

Orange Beach

Orange Beach Alabama

Orange Beach is simply a beach lover’s paradise! Home to over 27 miles of white sand beaches and the clearest, emerald waters, this Gulf-front city is the perfect place to build a lifetime of memories. As one of Alabama’s top family vacation destinations, the shores are packed with exciting things to do.

Relax on the beach as you soak up the sun or take a dip in the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. If you’re looking for adventure, cast your line into the deep blue or speed through the waves on a jet ski. There is always one thing or another to do in Orange Beach with its endless attractions.

Orange Beach is known for its proximity to Florida. Because of that, it attracts a lot of vacationers. You’ll find plenty of hotels as well as restaurants with mouth-watering local and international cuisines.

Orange Beach prides itself on its natural beauty and preservation efforts. From their gorgeous shoreline to protected wildlife habitats like Wolf Bay and Graham Creek Nature Preserve, they strive to maintain the natural setting and ensure it stays that way for generations to come.

If you love deep-sea fishing, you’ll want to visit Orange Beach. Many different charters are available for hire, with captains who know where all the best fish hang out. It’s a great way to spend a day when you’re not into soaking up the sun on the beach.

Several private beaches are also available at resorts in the area.

Robinson Island

If you’re looking for a more secluded beach, try Robinson Island. It’s only accessible by kayak, standup paddleboard, or boat from Orange Beach. However, you will be rewarded with clear waters and pristine nature.

After all, Robinson Island doesn’t only offer recreation to its visitors, but it’s also a bird and wildlife sanctuary. It’s a significant nesting area for herons and terns, which makes it a popular spot for birding.

Even though the island can sometimes get busy with boaters and sun seekers, it’s definitely worth a visit. Yet, there are no facilities, so make sure to bring your own food and drinks.

Gulf State Park Public Beach, Best for Families

The Gulf State Park Beach is located in the Gulf State Park which is home to the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. The beach itself is public and is considered one of the best beaches in Alabama. This is because the sand is soft, and the water is clear.

Many tourists visit this beach every year to enjoy this white sandy beach that has calm and clear waters. There are lifeguards ready to assist, so you can feel safe while swimming.

You can also book a fishing trip from this beach or rent a kayak to paddle along the shoreline. The Gulf State Park Beach is one of the best beaches in Alabama for families, couples, and even kids.

If you want to spend some time on the beach at night, go camping at the Gulf State Park Campground, where you will find many amenities, including picnic areas, restrooms, and playgrounds.

This beach also has a pier that allows visitors to fish or walk along just for fun. In addition to the pier, there are plenty of picnic tables and pavilions, making it easy for families to visit. There are also many hiking trails there, so you can do so at this beach location if you feel like exploring nature a bit.

This beach is amazing for a relaxing day at the beach with your family. In addition to the beautiful scenery, you can swim in the Gulf of Mexico and play sports on the sand. There are also several places to take-out food and drinks to have an inexpensive meal or snack.

Gulf State Park Beach is one of Alabama’s most family-friendly beaches. It has 35-foot-tall dunes that lead down to a beautiful stretch of white sand. Several vendors set up along the boardwalk, offering everything from snacks to sunscreen.

Gulf State Park offers several other amenities beyond its beautiful beaches, including an 18-hole golf course and an Audubon Bird Sanctuary.

Dauphin Island East End Public Beach

According to Coastal Living, Dauphin Island East End Public Beach is one of the best beaches in Alabama. Located just west of Mobile Bay, this barrier island is home to Fort Gaines, a 19th-century fort involved in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. The island near the beach is also known for its abundance of bird species and migratory birds.

There are no high-rise condos or fancy restaurants on Dauphin Island, just quiet stretches of sand where you can relax and unwind. The beach is family-friendly, and you’ll find plenty of space for kids to play. There are a couple of hotels on Dauphin Island, but most people stay in beach houses.

Dauphin Island is also one of the few places along the coast where you can get your feet wet without walking down a long flight of stairs. Even a paved path takes you from the parking lot down to the beach, making it accessible for those who need it.

Once you’re on the beach, there’s plenty of space to spread your towel or set up an umbrella. And if you want more shade than what’s provided by your parasol, several pavilions are scattered along the shore that offer protection from both sun and rain.

Many more activities are available on Dauphin Island, including fishing charters, jet ski rentals, and parasailing tours.

West Beach

West Beach is one of the beaches of Gulf Shores and is one of the most beautiful in the country. The sand is fine and white, and the water is clear and clean. You’ll find many activities to enjoy on the beach, including fishing, swimming, snorkeling, boat tours, sailing, kayaking, and more. Anytime you plan to take a break from the beach, check out one of the local restaurants or visit one of the historic sites in town.

West Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations in Alabama, and for a good reason. The beaches are beautiful, and offer tons to do in the area.

You can spend your sweet time lounging on the beach or take a relaxing stroll along the pier. If you’re feeling adventurous, try parasailing or jet skiing.

Visiting West Beach is like taking a vacation that has something for everyone in the family. Kids will enjoy spending time at one of the local water parks, while adults can explore unique shops and restaurants. If you are looking for a getaway from it all, you can’t go wrong with West Beach!

The water there is calm, so it’s a great place to bring young kids or anyone who wants to float and relax. You can also walk, take a stroll along the coast or stroll through nearby Gulf State Park.

Gulf Shores Public Beach

There’s nothing like the warm feeling of sand and crashing waves on your toes! Gulf Shores is known for its warm, cloudless days and white sandy beaches, ideal for relaxing in the sun or playing in the surf.

The best thing about the Gulf Shores Public Beach is the ease of access. The parking lot is large, and the beach is long so that you won’t feel cramped by crowds. There are also plenty of public restrooms, showers, and changing stalls, which help make a day at the beach easygoing.

Gulf Shores Public Beach has lifeguards on duty seven days a week during the summer months. It is open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year, and you can drive your vehicle on the beach if you have a permit.

The average water temperature in Gulf Shores ranges from about 68 to 78 degrees year-round, but it can go as low as 50 degrees or as high as 90 degrees. The water is warm enough for a nice swim from May to October, but swimmers should be aware that dangerous rip currents are present.

Alabama Point Beach

Alabama Point East Beach is located at Perdido Pass and is the only beach in Alabama located directly on the Gulf of Mexico. This beach is one of the most popular spots for families and offers some of the best fishing, surfing, and boating experiences along the Gulf Coast.

There are plenty of things to do at Alabama Point Beach. You can go fishing, swimming, crabbing (with a permit), and enjoy the view from your boat or the shore. There is a boardwalk along the beach, picnic areas, and a few outdoor showers. You can also rent a sunbed with an umbrella there.

Note that this beach gets very popular, especially during the summer months, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you are around.

Fairhope Beach

Fairhope Beach Alabama

Fairhope, a vibrant community on the Alabama Gulf Coast, is known for its beautiful beach and its vast views of Mobile Bay. Before you hit the beach, be sure to visit the neighborhood’s fantastic seafood restaurants, stores, boutiques, cafes, art galleries and gift stores.

If you are looking for a lively beach scene and more activities than just lying by the waves, Fairhope should be on your itinerary. This beach is a popular swimming spot because of its shallow waters and low waves. Picnic areas and trees can be found in a grassy area behind the beach. The atmosphere at Fairhope Beach and the surrounding area is tranquil.

The fact that Alabama’s beaches are litter-free will appeal to tourists concerned about the environment, as will the continued efforts of coastal communities to promote environmentally friendly tourism.

Cotton Bayou Beach

Cotton Bayou Beach Alabama

Cotton Bayou Beach is a short strip of beach sandwiched between two boardwalks, two highways, and residential homes. This secluded getaway offers the same pure white sand as other stretches of beach in Orange Beach but is less crowded than some public beaches.

Cotton Bayou Public Beach is one of three public beaches in Orange Beach, Alabama, and has a variety of restaurants, stores, and services to suit your needs. It’s no surprise that this easily accessible beach is popular with tourists, as it has lifeguards and free parking.

It is also a suitable place for all typical beach activities such as swimming, sunbathing, walking, having a family picnic, or building sandcastles with the kids.

This beach is convenient because it has on-site restrooms and showers. Staying at The Tides Hotel (Best Western Premier), allows you to experience the pulse of Orange Beach and neighboring amenities while having easy access to Cotton Bayou Beach.

Romar Beach

During the day, Romar Beach is an iconic beach scene with sand castles, kites, volleyball and one of the best places to see the spectacular Gulf Shores sunsets. Romar Beach requires parking, but it is easily accessible and ideal for an after-dinner beach walk or an afternoon picnic by the ocean.

The beach is small, which is why so many people enjoy it. If you visit it, you should remember that parking is limited. So it is better to visit this beach if you are staying in a nearby residential complex, such as the Phoenix V, which is one of many residential complexes owned by the same company and offers a variety of options depending on the size of your group.

This beach area is easy to get to. It’s located 6.8 miles east of Highway 59.

North Beach Park

North Beach Park is a beach with vast expanses of sand and plenty of trees, making it ideal for relaxation.

Locals advise bringing a hammock if you have one, as you can hang it from a few of the trees that line the beach. On a hot, sunny summer day, however, you can enjoy some much-needed shade even without a hammock.

For a change of pace from the waves, you can take a short break and head to a nearby pond to enjoy watching the ducks. Each morning, beachgoers are greeted with a meticulously maintained and pristine shoreline. What’s even more fascinating is that many people love to visit the beach during the nighttime to indulge in stargazing.

A study published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Nature Climate Change suggests that more than half of the world’s sandy beaches could be gone by 2100.

“We need to understand that nature tends to always change and the shoreline is very dynamic,” Michalis Vousdoukas, an oceanographer and lead author of the study, told Travel + Leisure

Even though it is typical for shorelines to retreat, under normal circumstances the back part of the beach would also change so that the overall size of the sandy area would be maintained. The problem is that humans have typically constructed these beach backs, indicating that the beaches will begin to disappear.

The HawaiianIslands.com website has combined statistics with the most popular beaches on Tripadvisor in each country to show how many of the world’s beaches could disappear by the turn of the century.

Landmark Beach in Lagos, Nigeria, takes the top spot with a projected shoreline loss of 3,012.8 feet. Following closely is Mackenzie Beach in Larnaca, Cyprus, estimated to lose 2,168.3 feet of shoreline. Additionally, Spiaggia La Cinta in San Teodoro, Italy, faces a potential loss of up to 1,687 feet of shoreline.

According to Vousdoukas, the islands are so threatened because they are “low-lying and relatively narrow, making them vulnerable to coastline retreats.”

Completing the global top 10 list are Praia Da Costa Do Sol in Maputo, Mozambique; Kuakata Sea Beach in Patuakhali, Bangladesh; KaByar Wa Beach in KaByar Wa, Myanmar; Entry of Elegushi Beach in Lekki, Nigeria; Royal Commission Beach Yanbu in Yanbu Al Bahr, Saudi Arabia; Simaisma North Beach in Al Daayen, Qatar; and Al Thakeera Beach in Al Khor, Qatar.

Playa Akumal in Cancun leads the list in North America with a length of 872.3 feet, followed by Playa Veracruz in Panama City at 664 feet, and Clearwater Beach in Longboat Key, Florida, at 634.5 feet. Remarkably, Clearwater Beach is the sole American beach to secure a spot among the top 15 on the continent.

“Overall North American beaches are less natural and more managed than South American ones,” Vousdoukas said. “In South America, there are natural and anthropogenic erosion processes going on which combined with shoreline retreat will lead to more erosion.”

Brazil claims the top five South American beaches, with the Beach of Morro Branco in Beberibe, Praia Dos Carneirdos in Tamanandaré, and Porto De Galinhas in Ipojuca taking the leading positions.

According to the report, more than one-third of the world’s coasts are currently sandy beaches, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions would be the most effective approach to solving the problem. Even modest reductions in emissions could prevent up to 40% of coastline retreat.

But at the moment, we are endangering their natural mobility more and more by constructing on those shorelines. “So we need to understand the importance of keeping the coastline as natural as possible and free of hard, permanent structures,”  Vousdoukas said.
