Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum just announced on X the approval of new passenger terminals at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) in Dubai.

With the capacity to host up to to 260 million passengers annually, the project will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates. With construction set to begin immediately, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said, “The initial phase of the project will be completed within a decade.”

Dubai’s ruler and Prime Minister of the UAE announced this “as part of Dubai Aviation Corporation’s strategy” and that he hopes the airport “will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub, and its new global center.”

Sitting on the outskirts of Dubai, surrounded by an empty desert the area will soon also house over a million people with plans set to be drawn up for an ‘airport city’. DWC will also be the new hub of UAE’s flagship carrier, low-cost carrier Flydubai and their partner airlines.

Largest airports in the world in 2024

In terms of pure size, not volume of passengers, here are the other biggest airports in the world that round out the top five.

King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia (DMM): measuring at 300 square miles, the massive airport actually only sees roughly 10 million passengers annually.

Denver International Airport (DEN): at 53 square miles, it is double the size of the next largest U.S. airport and embraces outdoor spaces with views of the Rocky Mountains and Colorado plains in the distance.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL): with plans to expand to handle up to 100 million passengers per year, currently at 39 square miles the airport is a key hub for airlines in Malaysia’s capital city.

Istanbul Airport (IST): the relatively new airport opened in 2019 and is hoping to serve the most passengers per year. At 29.5 square miles, the airport is a feat of modern design and focuses on sustainability.

Air Canada joins the group of American carriers that are already offering direct flights to the resort town of Tulum, Mexico.

On May 3, Tulum International Airport Felipe Carrillo Puerto (TQO) will receive its first passengers from Toronto, and on May 4, from Montreal.

“New route alert! Beginning May 3, 2024, you’ll be able to fly direct to Tulum from Toronto on Fridays and Sundays, and from May 4, 2024, direct from Montreal on Saturdays.” Air Canada said in a press release.

This is part of Air Canada’s diversification strategy for popular destinations, according to Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada.

For his part, Miguel Torruco Marqués, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, celebrated the start of the new two routes.

“Without connectivity, there is no tourism, and the [Toronto and Montreal] new routes to the new Tulum International Airport, which is ready to receive five million passengers, will boost the arrival of tourists from our second most important source market for international tourists.”

By summer 2024, Air Canada will be operating 520 daily flights to 120 destinations in Canada, the US, and the Caribbean, accounting for 66,000 seats, which represents an increase of 5 percent from 2023.

Air Canada is the latest carrier flying to Tulum non-stop. On March 31, the destination welcomed its first-ever United Airlines flight from Boston, and some days later, another from Chicago.

As of today, United transports passengers to Tulum from eight American cities.

Other airlines offering non-stop flights to Tulum include Delta, which started operations to this town on March 28 from Atlanta, and American Airlines which offers flights to Tulum from Dallas and Charlotte.

Representing Central America, Copa Airlines has been operating a Panama-Tulum route since February.

On June 13, JetBlue will fly to Tulum from New York (JFK). For its part, Spirit Airlines has announced the start of operations to Tulum from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando in the next few months.

Iberojet in Europe also plans to offer flights to Tulum from Spain and France later this year.

According to a recent study from NerdWallet, Frontier Airlines had the most delayed flights in the United States, with more than 30.7% of its flights being delayed and 2.13% of all flights being canceled. The airline unfortunately led all other airlines in both categories and only had 66.99% of flights arrive on time.

In terms of delayed flights, JetBlue was a close second with 30.4% of flights delayed with Spirit Airlines coming in third at 28.5% of flights. In terms of canceled flights, the order stayed the same with JetBlue in second with 2.1% and Spirit Airlines in third at 1.7%.

The American ultra-low-cost airline operates flights to over 100 locations in the United States along with 31 international destinations. They recently announced a new nonstop flight operating three times a week from Charlotte to Miami, starting at $29.

In terms of the best airlines according to the study, Delta Air Lines had the highest on-time percentage at 82.6%. SkyWest Airlines (a Delta regional airline), had the lowest percent of delayed flights at 16.01% with Alaska Airlines having the lowest percent of canceled flights at 0.81%.

How to avoid delays. Here are some tips for your summer travel:

How To Compensate For Your Delayed U.S. Flights

Book the earliest flight in the day so you are not waiting for the aircraft to arrive from another destination.

Try your best to avoid layovers and book nonstop flights even if the airfare is a tad more expensive.

Choose an airline that has multiple flights the day of your flight and if your flight does get booked, the airline will rebook you on their next flight at no charge.

Look at alternate routes to get to your final destination, For example, if your flight into San Francisco (SFO) gets canceled, look at flights flying into Oakland, or other airports in the Bay Area.

Discover Airlines, the leisure airline of the Lufthansa Group, has announced its arrival at Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), which serves the tourist city of Tulum, Mexico. With this, it becomes the first European company to land at this airport.

Starting from the upcoming winter season in the northern hemisphere, the airline will initiate a new route connecting Tulum with Frankfurt, Germany (FRA), from December 12, 2024, through April 2025. This service will offer two weekly flights and will be facilitated by the Airbus A330-300, which can accommodate between 283 and 302 passengers across executive class, premium economy, and economy sections.

Tulum flight programming with Discover Airlines

  • Frankfurt – Tulum flight 4Y 12 FRA 16:45 . 22:30 TQO / Thursday.
  • Frankfurt – Tulum flight 4Y 12 FRA 10:20 . 16:05 TQO /Sunday.

  • Tulum, Frankfurt flight 4Y 13 TQO 18:05 , 09:55 FRA / Sunday.

The first European airline in Tulum

At the recent International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain, the Quintana Roo Tourist Promotion Council (CPTQ) announced that it is in discussions to bring airlines from Switzerland, Germany, and Spain to Tulum.

Most of the airlines that had already announced their arrival at the new Mexican airport were American: Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, jetBlue and Air Canada, connecting with eleven destinations in the United States and Canada with up to 12 flights a day in each direction. Recently, the first flights from Central and South America with Copa Airlines through Panama City were announced.

Reasons why Tulum is seeing record tourism this year

Amid the winter season and prevailing freezing temperatures across most of the United States, Americans are increasingly drawn to the sunny allure of the Mexican Caribbean. This region, celebrated for its pristine beaches, favorable weather, and breathtaking ocean views, is experiencing a surge in popularity. Tulum, in particular, has emerged as the favored destination for U.S. vacationers, surpassing even Cancun in terms of bookings. According to Mexico’s tourism authority, Sectur, Tulum boasts a local occupancy rate of 88%, outperforming Cancun’s 81.4%.

Tulum’s appeal lies in its recognition as one of the best destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, as per TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards. The town offers award-winning service and a diverse tourist experience, hosting top-rated properties like Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya and Secrets Tulum. Additionally, Tulum presents a cost-effective option for the average American traveler, with a week-long hotel stay averaging $1,057, according to Budget Your Trip.

Safety is a paramount concern for visitors, and Tulum addresses this with heightened security measures in downtown areas and major tourist attractions, ensuring a low-risk environment for international travelers. Despite being a Level 2 destination as per the State Department, indicating moderate caution, the presence of round-the-clock patrols and adherence to safety guidelines have made Tulum a secure and appealing choice for U.S. tourists.

Hawaiian Airlines, the first significant U.S. carrier to provide the satellite-based system on board commercial flights, is transforming the in-flight experience with the launch of free Wi-Fi services powered by SpaceX’s Starlink.

This action represents a major step forward in the airline industry’s efforts to give customers high-speed connectivity while they are in flight. Free Wi-Fi is currently available on board JetBlue Airways, and last year Delta Air Lines gave its loyalty program members free internet access.

The airline has a vast network of routes that cross the Pacific Ocean, linking mainland and Hawaiian cities with international locations like Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. With the recent installation of Wi-Fi powered by Starlink, travelers will be able to take advantage of improved in-flight amenities.

It truly seems like something that shouldn’t be conceivable when boarding a commercial aircraft, said Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX Chad Gibbs.

“We now have a different paradigm, which is that we have incredible amounts of capacity and bandwidth that we can bring to the plane,” he added.

Hawaiian and SpaceX first collaborated after the latter signed an agreement in April 2022. Before that, Hawaiian did not provide any in-flight Wi-Fi. The idea was to use the Starlink network, which consists of over 5,000 low-Earth orbiting satellites and currently serves over 2.3 million people worldwide with internet access, to provide dependable in-flight Wi-Fi.

Although the deal’s value and the cost of installing aviation-specific Starlink terminals on Hawaiian Airlines’ fleet of aircraft have not been made public by either company, they did point out that the costs have decreased from those of the early Wi-Fi systems.

Hawaiian Airlines CEO Peter Ingram underlined the potentially revolutionary effect of providing Starlink-powered Wi-Fi on flights, saying, “we think it is really going to set an entirely new standard for connectivity on airplanes.”

What It’s Like Using SpaceX’s Broadband for Inflight Wi-Fi?

JSX introduced free Starlink Wi-Fi, becoming the first U.S. air carrier to offer SpaceX’s high-speed internet on flights and pcmag.com tested it.

A test flight demonstrated the service’s impressive performance, offering speeds comparable to 4G and 5G, with significant improvements in connectivity.

Speed tests showed an average download speed of 126Mbps. The service, which operates via SpaceX’s low-orbit satellite constellation, promises a seamless experience for passengers, marking a significant upgrade from traditional geostationary satellite Wi-Fi systems. This advancement indicates a promising future for in-flight internet services.

Visitors to several popular tropical destinations just got even more flight options. On February 2, Delta Airlines announced that it will be adding new routes to parts of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Barbados later this year. These completely new destinations come in addition to several recent announcements of increased flight options on routes that are currently covered or bringing back older routes that were previously eliminated from Delta’s schedules.

Delta’s increased flight options will include routes between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Mazatlán, Mexico from December 21 and Atlanta and both Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Barbados from November 23. Atlanta and Minneapolis/St. Paul are both major Delta hubs, which means that flights to and from both of these airports will also open up a significant number of options for connections to these destinations from airports across the country.

Delta Air Lines To Resume Flights To Cuba In 2023

With these additions, Delta’s full flight schedule to Latin American countries will include nearly 1,000 options per week. By next winter, these flights will include options for visiting at least 50 destinations in this region, which will play a major role in increasing Delta’s coverage of many of the closest tropical destinations for American travelers.

Delta also claims to be the number one airline to fly to South America, and boosting its presence in Latin America alongside continued South American growth is sure to further boost its popularity as one of the best-known international airlines in the United States.

Other recently announced new destinations or locations with increased Delta flights include Tulum, Curaçao, Aspen, Fresno, Santa Barbara, and many others. While some of these changes may simply involve moving from one daily flight to two, this still means that twice as many people will have the opportunity to take advantage of these routes, and travelers that experience missed or canceled flights will not have to wait as long to take a replacement flight.

According to a study that examined the turbulence levels of 150,000 airline routes using the travel tool Turbli, passengers flying from Nashville to Raleigh/Durham are most likely to have the bumpiest travels.

The scientific term for the degree of turbulence intensity used in the report to determine the turbulence levels is “eddy dissipation rate,” which is assigned to each route.

The following are the top ten worst routes for turbulence:

  • Nashville (BNA) to Raleigh/Durham (RDU)
  • Charlotte (CLT) to Pittsburgh (PIT)
  • Denver (DEN) to Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
  • New York (JFK) to Raleigh/Durham (RDU)
  • Warwick (PVD) to Syracuse (SYR)
  • Atlanta (ATL) to Dulles (IAD)
  • Pittsburgh (PIT) to Raleigh/Durham (RDU)
  • New York (LGA) to Portland (PWM)
  • Boston (BOS) to Syracuse (SYR)
  • Boston (BOS) to Philadelphia (PHL)

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, turbulence is an air movement caused by jet streams, temperature fronts, air surrounding mountains, thunderstorms, and atmospheric pressure. It can occur when the sky looks clear and can come unexpectedly.

The report also provides information on the global airports most susceptible to turbulence within a 100-kilometer radius of the hub, with Santiago (SCL), Medina (MED), and Tokyo’s Narita (NRT) securing the top three positions. In the United States, Denver (DEN) holds the 7th rank, making it the sole US airport in the top ten.

2022 saw the highest number of turbulence-related injuries (17 cases) since 2011. Most injuries from turbulence are sustained by airline crew members, according to FAA data. The FAA advises using only authorized child safety seats on board aircraft and always fastening your seatbelt to protect yourself from sudden turbulence.

Indonesia’s Minister for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sandiaga Uno, has issued a call to action for airport staff to consistently provide exceptional service to passengers at Bali Airport. This directive follows the listing of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport among the world’s worst by a leading passenger rights organization.

Addressing this issue from Jakarta, Minister Uno stressed the importance of hospitality workers, particularly those at airports and borders, in creating a positive first impression of Indonesia for tourists. He stated, “They get their first impression at the airport, and we must ensure that our airports exemplify typical Indonesian hospitality.”

Reacting to the AirHelp survey, which ranked Bali Airport among the ten worst globally in performance, customer service, and amenities, Minister Uno acknowledged the need for improvement. He referenced similar poor scores for Syamsuddin Noor Airport in Banjarmasin and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, noting that these findings will serve as a basis for departmental evaluations.

Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport was ranked at a lowly 189th position out of 194 in a recent global airport rating, scoring just 6.55. This ranking places it just above five other airports with poorer ratings: Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport, London Gatwick Airport, Malta International Airport, and Banjarmasin Syamsudin Noor International Airport.

Minister Uno confirmed the Ministry’s ongoing efforts in training airport staff, including immigration and porter services, to enhance the public-facing aspects of airport operations. He emphasized the necessity for airport staff to focus on delivering excellent hospitality to tourists from all regions.

Highlighting the broader implications, Uno mentioned, “It’s crucial so that tourists continue to visit Indonesia, fostering quality and sustainable tourism, leading to business opportunities, economic growth, and job creation.”

He further added, “Tourists value not only natural beauty but also their overall experience in Indonesia. Prioritizing service and hospitality is essential.”

Minister Uno urged airports nationwide to commit to providing excellent service and creating a welcoming environment for tourists consistently. He pinpointed Ngurah Rai Bali, Soekarno Hatta, and the entry points in Batam and the Riau Islands as critical areas for hospitality and service improvement.

While Minister Uno’s remarks reflect a constructive response to the survey feedback, there have been differing opinions among officials. The Vice President of PT Angkasa Pura, the state-owned enterprise managing Bali Airport, expressed skepticism about the survey’s results, citing the lack of detailed survey parameters and the awards Bali Airport received in 2023 for customer service, environmental commitments, and operations.

Looking ahead, Bali Airport is set to introduce an advanced immigration process for tourists. New autogates, to be installed in both arrival and departure terminals, will facilitate tourists using the e-Visa on Arrival process, aiming to expedite airport transit and improve efficiency.

Tourists will be encouraged to apply for the e-Visa on Arrival online, although the visa-on-arrival option will remain available for travelers from 97 countries. Minister Uno also hinted at the possibility of reinstating visa-free travel for Bali’s top tourists, though no official changes have been announced yet.

Over the past decade, the Mexican Caribbean has emerged as one of the most rapidly expanding destinations for American tourists. Tulum, a key attraction in the region, is on the brink of an even greater surge in popularity with the impending completion of two significant projects: the Mayan Train and Tulum International Airport. As these developments near the completion date, major airlines are beginning to schedule flights from the United States to this increasingly sought-after destination.

American Airlines has recently joined the roster of airlines offering convenient connections to and from Tulum International Airport, marking a significant milestone for the region.

In an announcement on Friday, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa shared the exciting news that American Airlines has officially confirmed daily flights to Tulum.

Commencing on March 28, 2024, travelers can expect a robust schedule with four daily flights. This includes two daily flights from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), one daily service from Charlotte (CLT), and an additional daily flight from Miami (MIA). With this expansion, American Airlines is set to become the preeminent U.S. airline operating at Tulum International Airport, enhancing accessibility and connectivity for both domestic and international travelers.

“The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport of Tulum will be inaugurated in less than a month. Construction continues to advance, which will have the capacity to serve 5.5 million passengers,” she said.

Tulum's New Airport Aims To Accommodate Up To 5.5 Million Travelers

The construction of Tulum Airport is projected to finish by December 2023. As per the existing timetable, full operational status is anticipated by May 2024, closely coinciding with the scheduled inauguration of the Mayan Train, with only a four-month gap.

The simultaneous start of two major projects on the Riviera Maya is no mere coincidence. Tulum Airport is strategically designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing highway system and sections 5-7 of the Mayan Train network. It will also have its own station, further improving connectivity and accessibility.
