Set at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, visiting Los Cabos is a unique experience on its own. This stunning coastline is known for its breathtaking landscapes, beautiful beaches, rich marine life, and luxury resorts.
All that makes for a fantastic travel destination but you can take your vacation even further by avoiding the crowds and exploring some of the hidden gems near Los Cabos.
San Dionisio
Even though Los Cabos isn’t primarily known for hiking, you can still find some excellent trails there. San Dionisio is one of them. It’s located in the heart of Sierra La Laguna, and as it’s not much talked about, you might have it pretty much to yourself.
Another thing that makes this trail pretty exclusive is that the terrain is rather challenging and not suitable for recreational hikers. It’s more than 20 miles long, with a lot of ups and downs and several river crossings. You will need about 3 days to finish it. However, you will love the feeling of being in pristine nature and might not want to come back to reality.
Boca de la Sierra
If you find yourself in or around Miraflores, you might as well head for a short trip into the outdoors to Boca de la Sierra. As the name suggests, this trail is set at the foothills of Sierra de la Laguna. It’s formed by the San Bernardo stream where you can swim, and surrounded by beautiful nature which is home to species like cougars, bobcats, and deer.
If you feel playful enough, you can also explore the area on a zipline tour or an ATV organized by Cabo Adventures. You should bring enough water but for food, there is a cute restaurant at the beginning of the trail.
Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve
For avid divers and snorkelers, there is Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve – the only hard coral reef in the Gulf of California that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known as one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world.
The much-depleted reef was established as a national marine park in 1995 by local communities to restore it. Fishing is prohibited and there are eco-friendly accommodation facilities. Visitors are encouraged to take good care of the surroundings as well. Thanks to that, Cabo Pulmo remains a thriving sustainable tourism destination.
If you’re not into snorkeling or diving, you can explore the shores of Cabo Pulmo by kayak. Which also has a very low impact on the environment.
Mt. Solmar
One noteworthy site can also be found right in the center of Cabo San Lucas. This rocky peak provides a dramatic backdrop to Divorce Beach and jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Yet, it’s often overlooked and pretty much crowd-free.
You can climb it either on your own or with a tour guide. It takes about an hour to get to the summit and the last bit can be more about rock climbing than hiking. However, it’s suitable for all levels and the experience at the top is very rewarding.
San Jose Estuary
This freshwater oasis can be found where the Pacific Ocean meets the Gulf of California. It forms a unique ecosystem that serves as a habitat for many rare plants and animals, of which birds are the most significant ones.
Yes, San Jose Estuary is a paradise for birdwatchers. You can glimpse herons, egrets, ibises, and waterfowl. And the best way to do so is on a boat tour or a kayak. Those who are into taking pictures of nature will love these wetlands likewise.
The Glass Factory
If you like to bring handcrafted souvenirs to your friends and family, don’t forget to stop by the Glass Factory. It‘s also in the center of Cabo San Lucas, so you don’t have to travel far.
You can take a guided tour during which you will witness the traditional ways of glassmaking and glassblowing. Plus the interiors are decorated with mesmerizing glass installations well worth a pic or two.
Miraflores
Located about 45 minutes of drive from San José del Cabo, the little town of Miraflores is perfect for a day trip. Especially if you want to experience the local culture and enjoy a bit of shopping.
The town is famous for artisanal pottery, furniture, and leather goodies, such as saddles, belts, and wallets. You can also take a dip in healing hot springs just outside the town or get your adrenaline levels to spike during some off-roading on ATVs.
