Data collected by insurance company Quotezone.co.uk have revealed the cities and places where more holidaymakers have fallen victim to pickpocketing.

Their research classified the most visited European destinations by the number of pickpocketing mentions in reviews of “each country’s top five tourist attractions.”

Results are somehow shocking. While many tourists will tell you that Barcelona and Paris are probably the cities with the highest number of pickpockets, it turned out that the city where most travelers have lost their belongings is actually Italy.

The impressive Colosseum, the stunning Trevi Fountain and the historical Pantheon in Rome, as well as the Duomo di Milano in Milan and the Gallerie Degli Uffizi in Florence, are the most targeted hotspots by thieves in Europe. 

Paris came in second and Barcelona came in third. Hard to hear but we all saw that coming.

“Iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Trevi Fountain in Rome are particularly popular with pickpockets as they can move more inconspicuously amongst larger crowds,” said Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk.

Greece

Apply for a Greek digital nomad visa at a consulate in your home country or for a work permit at the Aliens and Immigration Department in Greece.

Successful applicants are those who can present proof of online work-related activities indicating the type of business they focus on, corporate purpose, and a business address, along with evidence showing they make at least 3,500€ per month.

Other requirements include: 

• A letter declaring that you are not going to stay in the country after your visa expires.

Spain

The Spanish digital nomad visa is meant for non-EU/EEA citizens as well as US, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada nationals. Those who have lived in the peninsula during the last five years are not eligible.

Requirements:

• Proof that you are an authentic remote worker.
• A college degree certificate or something that shows your expertise in your field.
• Proof that you have been working as a digital nomad for more than three months in a stable company or sector.
• Proof that your company has been around for over a year.
• Evidence that you earn €2,160 per month or more.
• Travel Insurance.
• Clean criminal records.
• Proof that you are willing to remain in Spain for no less than five years.

Before any visa is granted, you will also need to prove that you have not been convicted of a crime within the last five years and go to a valid Italian consulate and submit a declaration signed by their employer. The final hurdle? In order to obtain your visa, the Italian taxation office will need to speak to their equivalent in your country to ensure that you are tax-compliant.

Bottom line: in order to eat delicious Italian food on a daily basis, you are going to have to work for it! The great news is that Italy’s digital nomad visa is renewable and you can also bring your family, provided that you can get an all clear from Italy’s police headquarters.

Other countries offering digital nomad visas in the Mediterranean region

Not sure if you’ll be able to clear all of the bureaucratic hurdles and make Italy your new home? Have no fear—there are a number of other options in Europe that may be less of a headache.

While Spain also requires a lot of documents, they will let you apply directly from Spain and do not require proof of 12 months of accommodation, though requirements around proof of employment and payment of home country social security payments can be burdensome.

Greece offers another option. While it requires a higher monthly income of €3,200 per month and proof of accommodation, insurance, and a declaration letter from your employer, it also offers a 50% tax reduction program that you can apply for when you stay in Greece for a minimum of two years.

Malta just might be the easiest, with an income requirement of only €2,700 per month, an exemption from personal taxation for the one-year of visa validity, and English being one of Malta’s official languages. However, you will still need to show proof of accommodation, insurance, and provide a letter from your employer.

The Vigipirate is a three-tier safety system created in France in 1978. It consists of: “vigilance,” “heightened security/risk of attack,” and “attack emergency” levels.

The country decided to increase its security alert to the highest level possible in order to be able to mobilize monetary sources and quickly diffuse information to protect citizens if a crisis breaks out.

With this alert, France is allowed to display armed troops to patrol public places such as airports, public transport, shopping facilities, educational institutions, and sports, tourist and religious venues.

One of the reasons that triggered the government to raise its security alert is related to safety concerns regarding the Olympic and Paralympic Games that will take place in Paris and other cities this summer. 

Everything suggests that the threat is real – According to the national news channel France 24, high school students from more than 30 institutions received threatening emails through the Pronote software used by the Ministry of Education.

These emails state that schools in the country’s north will be soon attacked. They also contained “shocking” videos of beheadings, confirmed the minister Thursday.

The “Islamic State in Khorasan,” which is believed to be responsible for the terrorist attack in Russia, has perpetrated other attacks in Germany and France in recent times and is currently threatening France, Prime Minister Attal has stated, according to Reuters.
