Italy, Turkey and South Africa have embraced the digital nomad trend, offering visas tailored to this demographic.

According to these governments, digital nomads will bring entrepreneurial ideas to their countries, which will be valuable to technology and similar sectors.

Let’s review the specifics and requirements to get a digital nomad visa in these countries.

Italy

This Town In Italy Is Giving 3 Months Of Free Rent To Digital Nomads

Italy’s long-awaited digital nomad visa is finally available for non-EU citizens who carry out “a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy,” reads the decree.

Requirements:

  • Eligible candidates must earn €28,000 annually or more.
  • Robust health insurance that covers you for your entire stay.
  • Proof of accommodation for the time the visa is valid.
  • Proof that you have been a digital nomad or remote worker for longer than six months.
  • Criminal records.

The visa is valid for one year and it can be renewed if the applicant has the same conditions.

Digital nomads must be tax-compliant in Italy before applying for this visa. The Italian government will contact the taxation office in the applicant’s country of origin regarding taxes.

If interested, visit an Italian diplomatic-consular office to start the process.

Turkey

Turkey Joins The Hype And Launches Visa For Digital Nomads

The Republic of Türkiye is now offering a digital nomad visa for international remote workers.

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry gazetted the requirements for those who are interested.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be aged 21 to 55 years old.
  • A university degree.
  • Digital nomads must be employed, self-employed, or hold a business contract with an overseas company.
  • Eligible candidates must earn $36,000 or more per year.
  • A valid passport.

Successful applicants will obtain a Digital Nomad Identification Certificate. Then, they have to submit this certificate and the rest of the documents to a Turkey visa center or consulate to get the actual visa.

The following are the nationalities that can apply:

“France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Bulgaria, Romania, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, United Kingdom, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Belarus.”

South Africa

South Africa is the latest African country to offer a visa for “highly skilled workers” in the technology sector (some exceptions apply). Nomads will be allowed to live and work in this country for a set period.

Requirements:

  • Proof that you earn ZAR 1 million per year (around $53,000).
  • The foreign company you work for, may need to register and comply with South Africa’s PAYE tax system.
  • Proof of a rental contract, a lease or a hotel booking for the time you’ll be in the country.
  • Health insurance tailored for digital nomads working abroad.
  • An employment contract or any other document that proves you are self-employed.
  • A valid passport.

According to a decree released in February, visas may be issued for up to three years.

Applicants who will only stay in South Africa for less than six months won’t be subjected to income tax.

Eligible applicants are aged 21-55 years old, hold a college degree, make $3,000 per month, and come from any of the above-mentioned countries.

Candidates must upload a valid passport and register in GoTürkiye, the official government website for digital nomads.

Successful applicants will be issued a “Digital Nomad Identification Certificate,” which you should present at a Turkish visa center or a consulate back in your country.

The government looks to cater to those interested in history, exotic culture and cuisine, affordable living, and strong infrastructure.

Visa holders will be able to choose among Istanbul, Dalaman, Izmir or other multiple cities ready to welcome them.

Regarding the country’s capital, GoTürkiye says it’s “a business hub with large companies and small start-ups, a metropole of 20 million inhabitants, a meeting point of different cultures [and] a historical center where the paths of millennia-old civilizations converge.” reads the site.

Imagine if you could sit down to a perfect plate of cacio pepe pasta, eat gelato, drink the finest of Italian wine, and walk in the footsteps of gladiators, emperors, and fashionistas, all before taking your daily afternoon Italian espresso in a sunny piazza. This dream can now be yours as Italy has officially launched a digital nomad visa as of April 4, 2024!

Before we go any further, we have to bring up the bad news – getting your Italian visa is not going to be easy and there will be several hoops to jump through. Not only will you need to show an annual income of at least three times the minimum level required for exemption from participation in Italian healthcare, around €28,000, but you will also need to buy an international healthcare plan for the one year that the visa covers. In addition, you will need to prove that you have been a digital worker for at least six months previously and show that you have suitable accommodation for the entire year of your stay.

Before any visa is granted, you will also need to prove that you have not been convicted of a crime within the last five years and go to a valid Italian consulate and submit a declaration signed by their employer. The final hurdle? In order to obtain your visa, the Italian taxation office will need to speak to their equivalent in your country to ensure that you are tax-compliant.

Bottom line: in order to eat delicious Italian food on a daily basis, you are going to have to work for it! The great news is that Italy’s digital nomad visa is renewable and you can also bring your family, provided that you can get an all clear from Italy’s police headquarters.

Malta's Digital Nomad Visa Among the Best in Europe - Here's How To Apply

Not sure if you’ll be able to clear all of the bureaucratic hurdles and make Italy your new home? Have no fear—there are a number of other options in Europe that may be less of a headache.

While Spain also requires a lot of documents, they will let you apply directly from Spain and do not require proof of 12 months of accommodation, though requirements around proof of employment and payment of home country social security payments can be burdensome.

Greece offers another option. While it requires a higher monthly income of €3,200 per month and proof of accommodation, insurance, and a declaration letter from your employer, it also offers a 50% tax reduction program that you can apply for when you stay in Greece for a minimum of two years.

Malta just might be the easiest, with an income requirement of only €2,700 per month, an exemption from personal taxation for the one-year of visa validity, and English being one of Malta’s official languages. However, you will still need to show proof of accommodation, insurance, and provide a letter from your employer.

While there are now a number of countries in Europe for digital nomads to call home, if Italy has always been your dream, then you can now make it a reality! It might be best to just hire a lawyer to help you clear the bureaucratic hurdles! Trust us, that pasta is going to taste even better when you know you did your part to earn it! As the Italians say, In bocca al lupo – good luck!

Americans will no longer need to worry about getting a tourism visa to enter Brazil at least until April 10, 2025, according to a new decree enacted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Until 2019, Americans needed a visa to access the Brazilian territory. With the coming to power of the right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro it changed for Americans, but with the new left-wing president, it’ll change back again.

The reason behind this decision is that the United States doesn’t offer “reciprocity,” meaning they also require Brazilians to apply for American visas to enter the US, said the Brazilian government in a press release.

As of today, US nationals must fill out a form also known as Brazil e-Visa when traveling for tourism purposes. It costs $80.90, has a 10-year validity, and allows Americans to stay in the country for up to 90 days a year.

New Visa Requirements in 2025

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The new visa rules not only affect Americans but also Canadian and Australian passport holders.

Once it is available, it’ll grant Americans access to Brazil for 10 years and Canadians and Australians for 5 years for 90 days per year. The cost will remain at  $80.90 and “qualified applicants” will also have the opportunity to apply for an e-visa.

Only those arriving in Brazil via cruise vessels will be able to apply for e-visas.

The processing time shouldn’t take longer than five business days but the company in charge of the applications highly recommends starting the process with two months of anticipation.

Probably the most controversial aspect of the new requirements is that applicants will need to share their bank statements with the Brazilian government in order to get this new visa.

As reported by CNN, travelers will need to present proof of their last three bank statements or their last six payslips, showing they possess at least $2,000. If you don’t have such an amount you can get a “sponsor” who can present their bank statements and money instead of you.

Other requirements include a letter of intent in which you explain to the Brazilian government in detail when you are visiting, why you are visiting, and for how many days. You’ll also be requested to present proof of your return tickets and a document that shows that you reside in the United States.

It may sound hard but for Brazilians, it’s even harder.

Welcome to the digital nomad visa family, South Africa! As of March 28, 2024, South Africa officially became the fourth African country to offer a digital nomad visa.

This latest entrant into the digital nomad visa fold, however, does not come without controversy. Draft regulations to South African Immigration Regulations were submitted to the public for feedback in February, but the finalized amendments that went into effect ended up being identical to the draft regulations. This prompted criticism that the Minister of Home Affairs did not take any public commentary into consideration.

The new South African digital nomad visa, categorized as a visitor visa, may be issued for up to three years provided that the applicant works for a foreign employer and makes a minimum of ZAR 1 million ($53,600).

Critics of the new visa take issue with the fact that visa holders would not have to register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) if their visa is for a period of less than six months within one year. Because this tax exemption is not covered under the current Income Tax Act (ITA), the law would need to be updated, prompting even more legal headaches.

south africa

Other issues include the treatment of digital nomads’ software products. Under new amendments to the South African Copyright Bill, universities and other institutions could copy software without paying the creators of these products. Finally, it remains unclear whether freelancers can apply for the digital nomad visa and whether the minimum annual salary requirement of ZAR 1 million is a net or gross amount. These are all important concerns and it seems that none of them were taken into account between the draft and the final laws put into effect.

Other Countries in Africa Offering Digital Nomad Visa

If South Africa’s new digital nomad visa issues seem like a lot to unpack or the required salary sounds too high, digital nomad visas from three other African countries are also available.

Cape Verde is the easiest digital nomad visa gateway to Africa, only requiring proof of a $1500 bank balance for the last six months along with passport and insurance documentation.

Mauritius, on the other hand, requires that applicants earn $1500 per month and come from a list of 114 countries.

Namibia is the third African country to offer a digital nomad visa, but you can only stay for six months and will need to earn $2,000 per month.

With 54 countries in Africa and only four that currently have digital nomad visas, the continent of Africa is just getting started on the digital nomad scene but is sure to offer much more in the future. No matter which African country you choose, as we have seen with the concerns raised with the South African visa, it is important to do your homework and check with a tax representative to ensure that you are complying with the requirements and prepared for the implications of moving to a new country! And finally, we wonder: which African country will be next to welcome digital nomads?

The captivating land of The Lord of the Rings is considering offering visas for digital nomads in the future.

New Zealand is going through a significant review of its immigration laws, including its Accredited Employer Work Visa. This may be an opportunity to include a new digital nomad visa scheme, said Immigration Minister Erica Stanford.

Creating this visa for foreign workers is not a priority though, said the minister.

According to what is inferred from an extensive report by a local media outlet, The Post, one side aspect that New Zealand would be considering is taxes.

Countries like Indonesia are planning to offer a 5-year 0% tax for digital nomads. For its part, Thailand only taxes the money remote workers spend in the country but doesn’t touch nomads’ savings overseas, says PwC Consultant.

Deloitte tax partner Robyn Walker, says New Zealanders might not support the idea of offering nomads financial concessions.

“They [digital nomads] are driving on New Zealand roads and using other New Zealand resources so there’s a feeling they probably should contribute something,” Walker said. “People would probably need to come to New Zealand for more than tax reasons because they liked dolphins or mountains or Lord of the Rings or whatever,” she added.

Walker considers that even enforcing the highest tax rate of 39%, it would still be competitive.

“Obviously, we’re in a global war for talent but we still want people who will be happy to pay their fair share,” she says.

Revenue Minister Simon Watts didn’t exactly confirm if reduced taxes would be part of the digital nomad visa scheme. He just said that he was “currently considering a range of tax policy options to increase productivity in our economy.”

But that’s an issue that he’ll need to address sooner or later. According to The Economist, it’s expected that digital nomads will reach a billion by 2035.

Which Countries Have the Best Digital Nomad Visas?

Working remotely and dreaming of moving to another country? There’s a world of opportunity out there if you know where to look—and, depending on your citizenship, you may not even need to pay any taxes.

Digital nomad visas are now available in more than 60 countries around the world, and, for many remote workers, these visas are the easiest way to legally reside in a country if you meet the requirements. Most digital nomad visas offer the chance to stay for up to one year, with many offering the chance to extend your stay if you continue to meet income requirements and pay for your own private medical insurance.

When it comes to choosing the best digital nomad visa, the sweet spot is finding one that also exempts you from paying taxes. After comparing a wide range of digital nomad visas, we’ve identified five digital nomad visas in 2024 that stand out for their appealing combination of beautiful nature, cheap application fees, and, most importantly, zero taxes: Georgia, Anguilla, Bermuda, Croatia, and Costa Rica.

Anguilla

Have you always wanted to live the island life? Half a world away from Georgia, Anguilla, a British territory in the Caribbean, gives digital nomad visa holders the chance to start their day with a walk on the beach before…doing nothing at all. That’s right, Anguilla has no income requirements and won’t make you pay any taxes while you are on its 12-month digital nomad visa.

All you need to provide is your passport, birth certificate, and a description of the work you will be doing while you are in Anguilla. The one catch? You will need to pay a one-time $2000 entry fee and pay even more if you want to bring family members. The cost of living also isn’t so cheap. Despite the simple visa application requirements, the high fee may be a deal-breaker.

Bermuda

If the costs of applying for the digital nomad visa in Anguilla do not sound so enticing, Bermuda may be your island of choice – especially as it is known for its fast internet speeds.

Although it also has a high cost of living, it has one of the lowest visa application fees in the Caribbean – at only $263. You will need to pay this fee again if you decide to renew your visa after one year. Like Anguilla, Bermuda has no income requirements and won’t make you pay any taxes. You only need to show a clean criminal record, a passport, and proof of employment to enter an educational institution. Bermuda will also offer you a sweet bonus of a $200 customs allowance each time you enter the country.

Croatia

Croatia To Launch Digital Nomad Village With €520 Monthly Apartment Rentals

Moving back over to Europe, Croatia presents an intriguing mix of history and culture with a lower cost of living compared to many of its European neighbors. It also became part of the Schengen Zone at the beginning of 2023, making travel to other European countries much easier.

The income requirement is $2,500 per month or you can prove that you have $31,000 in savings. The digital nomad visa is good for 12 months and will not require to pay any taxes if you earn your income from a non-Croatian company. However, once the 12 months run out, you will need to leave the country and wait six months before you can reapply for the visa. In other words, stay for 12 months and then it may be time to apply for a new country’s digital nomad visa.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica Introduces Innovative Workstation Tailored For Digital Nomads

Similar to Croatia, Costa Rica will not require you to pay any taxes for 12 months on your income if you earn it from a company outside of the country. The income requirements, however, are higher at $3,000 per month, and this must be earned consistently.

This may require setting up a company from which you will be able to pay yourself. The visa application fee is only $100 and the cost of living is slightly lower than its neighbors in the Caribbean. For the incredible biodiversity, surfing opportunities, and security within the country, it might be well worth the effort!

Georgia

The word about Georgia is spreading amongst the digital nomad community, and it offers one of the most generous immigration policies in the world. Ninety-eight different countries can stay in Georgia for one year without a visa.

In order to meet the digital nomad requirements, you will need to prove that you make at least $2000 per month. Alternatively, you can show that you have $24,000 in your bank account. If you move to Georgia, you won’t be subject to any taxes for the first 180 days. After that, the top tax rate is 20% and if you receive “Small Business Status,” you will only be responsible for 1% tax for if you earn less than $184,000 per year. Georgia’s capital, Tbisili, is a dynamic, efficient place to do business and the surrounding wine country of Signagi and mountain towns such as Kazbegi provide great places to escape into nature.

Finding a visa that is a good fit for you is key when it comes to getting the most out of the time you spend in the European Union as a digital nomad, and certain countries offer better opportunities for long-term travelers than others.

While the easiest visas to obtain and the most lucrative countries to visit can vary from person to person and nationality to nationality, Spain, Portugal, and Estonia tend to be relatively straightforward options for many digital nomads from around the world.

Spain

Travelers from outside the EU can obtain a Spanish Digital Nomad Visa that is initially valid for 12 months and can be renewed for up to five years. This visa allows digital nomads to work remotely for a non-Spanish company, as well as earn up to 20 percent of their overall income by working for a local business to get even more out of the experience of living like a local.

Applicants for this visa need to have worked for their current company for a minimum of three months and be able to prove that they make at least €28k per year. Visitors who apply for a full 12-month visa will need to spend a minimum of six of those months in Spain to maintain their eligibility for the program.

Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Spain

  • Barcelona: great weather, well-connected airport, biggest nomad community in Spain.
  • Madrid: culture, food scene, well-connected airport.
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: big nomad community, eternal spring weather.
  • Palma de Mallorca: well-connected airport, great weather, touristy.
  • Marbella: nightlife, great weather, wealthy community.

Portugal

It is no longer as easy for digital nomads in Portugal to claim non-habitual resident status to avoid paying local taxes as they were before 2023, but this country still provides a visa program that is relatively easy for many visitors that make a minimum of €36,480 per year to qualify for. The new version of this program, called NHR 2.0, was launched on January 1.

NHR 2.0 offers similar benefits to digital nomads, but it focuses on attracting a smaller number of applicants who primarily work in certain fields that provide the most value to businesses and other organizations in Portugal.

Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Portugal

  • Lisbon: World’s biggest digital nomad community, weather, affordable.
  • Porto: affordable, culture, walkable city.
  • Ericeira: chill vibes, big digital nomad community, weather.

Estonia

Estonia’s digital nomad visa program allows visitors from any country to spend up to 12 months in the country as long as they make a minimum of €3,504 per month and are employed, self-employed, or work as a freelancer outside of Estonia. Visitors will only need to pay Estonian taxes if they spend more than 183 consecutive days in the country within that time frame.

Unlike many countries’ visa options, an Estonian digital nomad visa is only valid for 12 months and cannot be renewed. However, there are plenty of other exciting places to explore across the EU and around the world once you finish your year in Estonia!

Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Estonia

  • Tallinn: The capital is the only place saturated with digital nomads in Estonia. It has a great history and a startup & entrepreneur community.

The introduction of a five-year multiple-entry visa for travel and business has been announced by Indonesia’s Ministry of Immigration.

This significant step is a part of Director General of Immigration Silmy Karim’s mission to update Indonesia’s immigration laws for foreign nationals.

The new D1 Visa falls under the category of transit, family visitation, and tourism visas. The successful applicants will be able to visit Indonesia for up to 60 days at a time over a five-year period.

The Department of Immigration’s information has not specified how closely the 60-day windows can be used consecutively.

The IDR 15,000,000 visa fee must be paid online in Indonesian Rupiah to the Department of Immigration.

Holders of this visa are permitted to participate in meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions. As an alternative, holders may engage in tourism-related activities and pay visits to friends and relatives in Indonesia.

While in Indonesia, holders of a visa are required to abide by all national and local laws and regulations, respect the customs, culture, and have enough money for living expenses.

Although this is a feasible option for digital nomads whose income is generated online and from activities conducted online or outside Indonesia, visa holders are not allowed to conduct income-generating work or business in Indonesia.

“Staying in Indonesia over the period of your stay permit, engaging in prohibited activities, not complying with visa conditions, and/or not complying with Indonesian laws may result in you paying fines, being deported, and/or other legal charges,” said the Department of Immigration.

“You are prohibited from selling goods or services” and “you are prohibited from working in an employment relationship with an individual or corporation in Indonesia,” they added.

Before applying for a D1 visa, it’s important to keep in mind that you’ll need to provide a valid passport (at least six months), evidence of at least USD 2,000 in living expenses, a recent color photo, and additional documentation.

The extra paperwork that is needed is either “Information, invitations, or correspondence from government agencies or private institutions that explain the relationship with the applicant.”

As an alternative, candidates may submit a “Statement letter from the spouse or parents explaining the family relationship with the applicant and the activities to be carried out in Indonesia, attached with a family card / similar document.”

Visitors to Bali who already have connections with Indonesians may request that friends and family write a letter on their behalf.

Travelers are strongly advised to stay away from fraudulent and scam visa agent services, especially when doing so online, and to only work with visa agents who have personal recommendations.

Travelers can apply for arrival visas, second home visas, and all other categories of temporary stay visas on the only official Indonesian Immigration website, https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/.

According to a recent ranking, Argentina has the second-best digital nomad visa policy worldwide and the best in both North and South America.

Argentina’s digital nomad policy is the second most advantageous in the world for people who want to work abroad, according to the recently released VisaGuide.World Digital Nomad Index. To arrive at these results, the index took into account a number of factors, including living expenses, internet speed, required taxes, minimum income, and health score.

According to VisaGuide.World, the ranking highlights the popularity of Argentina’s Digital Nomad Visa, which was first made available to nomads on May 21, 2022. One reason for this popularity is that the visa allows nomads to live entirely tax-free for the duration of their stay in the nation.

Lum Kamishi, project manager at VisaGuide.World, notes that in the 1.5 years since the government introduced this visa, Argentina has proven its intention to use it by luring nomads with a variety of extremely enticing offers.

“Unlike some other countries, Argentina has taken seriously the capacity that a Digital Nomad Visa can have in boosting the economy. It has no tax policy for the entire stay, and its relatively low minimum income required, extra low living costs, and a high health score compared to other countries in this index, make Argentina extremely alluring and convenient for every Digital Nomad.” said Lum Kamishi, Project Manager at VisaGuide.World

He claims that two more factors that drive up the demand for this visa are Argentina’s popularity among tourists and its fast internet.

While there are Digital Nomad Visas available in four other South American countries, none of them are as desirable as Argentina. These nations are Uruguay, Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia, in order of ranking.

Spain is another Hispanic nation that holds the top spot. The latter has become the most practical option for digital nomads looking to work overseas. Argentina is ranked number two, followed by Romania, the United Arab Emirates, Croatia, and the United States.
