Located between Asia and Europe, Türkiye is the latest country to open its doors to digital nomads and remote workers from EU, UK, US and Canada.

Eligible applicants are aged 21-55 years old, hold a college degree, make $3,000 per month, and come from any of the above-mentioned countries.

Candidates must upload a valid passport and register in GoTürkiye, the official government website for digital nomads.

Successful applicants will be issued a “Digital Nomad Identification Certificate,” which you should present at a Turkish visa center or a consulate back in your country.

The government looks to cater to those interested in history, exotic culture and cuisine, affordable living, and strong infrastructure.

Visa holders will be able to choose among Istanbul, Dalaman, Izmir or other multiple cities ready to welcome them.

Regarding the country’s capital, GoTürkiye says it’s “a business hub with large companies and small start-ups, a metropole of 20 million inhabitants, a meeting point of different cultures [and] a historical center where the paths of millennia-old civilizations converge.” reads the site.

Other Countries in Southern Europe Offering Digital Nomad Visas

This Popular European Country Launches Digital Nomad Visa

Multiple European destinations have launched digital nomad visas targeting people who have freed themselves from 9-5 traditional jobs and boast a stable income of around $3,000 on average per month. Some of these countries include Greece, Italy, and Spain.

Greece

Apply for a Greek digital nomad visa at a consulate in your home country or for a work permit at the Aliens and Immigration Department in Greece.

Successful applicants are those who can present proof of online work-related activities indicating the type of business they focus on, corporate purpose, and a business address, along with evidence showing they make at least 3,500€ per month.

Other requirements include:

  • A letter declaring that you are not going to stay in the country after your visa expires.
  • Proof of employment and income.
  • A valid passport.
  • Filling out and signing the Application Form.
  • Rental contract or hotel booking.
  • Travel Insurance.
  • Clean criminal record certificate.
  • Return flight ticket.
  • Proof that you don’t have infectious diseases.

‍Italy

Designed for non-EU citizens “who carry out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy,” says the government on its recently launched digital nomad visa.

Requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Health insurance.
  • Proof of accommodation for the length of your stay.
  • Proof of income.

The visa is granted to those who can show “advanced technological means.” Nomads can be in the country for up to a year or renew their visas for a year more.

Spain

The Spanish digital nomad visa is meant for non-EU/EEA citizens as well as US, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada nationals. Those who have lived in the peninsula during the last five years are not eligible.

Requirements:

  • Proof that you are an authentic remote worker.
  • A college degree certificate or something that shows your expertise in your field.
  • Proof that you have been working as a digital nomad for more than three months in a stable company or sector.
  • Proof that your company has been around for over a year.
  • Evidence that you earn €2,160 per month or more.
  • Travel Insurance.
  • Clean criminal records.
  • Proof that you are willing to remain in Spain for no less than five years.

Imagine if you could sit down to a perfect plate of cacio pepe pasta, eat gelato, drink the finest of Italian wine, and walk in the footsteps of gladiators, emperors, and fashionistas, all before taking your daily afternoon Italian espresso in a sunny piazza. This dream can now be yours as Italy has officially launched a digital nomad visa as of April 4, 2024!

Before we go any further, we have to bring up the bad news – getting your Italian visa is not going to be easy and there will be several hoops to jump through. Not only will you need to show an annual income of at least three times the minimum level required for exemption from participation in Italian healthcare, around €28,000, but you will also need to buy an international healthcare plan for the one year that the visa covers. In addition, you will need to prove that you have been a digital worker for at least six months previously and show that you have suitable accommodation for the entire year of your stay.

Before any visa is granted, you will also need to prove that you have not been convicted of a crime within the last five years and go to a valid Italian consulate and submit a declaration signed by their employer. The final hurdle? In order to obtain your visa, the Italian taxation office will need to speak to their equivalent in your country to ensure that you are tax-compliant.

Bottom line: in order to eat delicious Italian food on a daily basis, you are going to have to work for it! The great news is that Italy’s digital nomad visa is renewable and you can also bring your family, provided that you can get an all clear from Italy’s police headquarters.

Malta's Digital Nomad Visa Among the Best in Europe - Here's How To Apply

Not sure if you’ll be able to clear all of the bureaucratic hurdles and make Italy your new home? Have no fear—there are a number of other options in Europe that may be less of a headache.

While Spain also requires a lot of documents, they will let you apply directly from Spain and do not require proof of 12 months of accommodation, though requirements around proof of employment and payment of home country social security payments can be burdensome.

Greece offers another option. While it requires a higher monthly income of €3,200 per month and proof of accommodation, insurance, and a declaration letter from your employer, it also offers a 50% tax reduction program that you can apply for when you stay in Greece for a minimum of two years.

Malta just might be the easiest, with an income requirement of only €2,700 per month, an exemption from personal taxation for the one-year of visa validity, and English being one of Malta’s official languages. However, you will still need to show proof of accommodation, insurance, and provide a letter from your employer.

While there are now a number of countries in Europe for digital nomads to call home, if Italy has always been your dream, then you can now make it a reality! It might be best to just hire a lawyer to help you clear the bureaucratic hurdles! Trust us, that pasta is going to taste even better when you know you did your part to earn it! As the Italians say, In bocca al lupo – good luck!

Welcome to the digital nomad visa family, South Africa! As of March 28, 2024, South Africa officially became the fourth African country to offer a digital nomad visa.

This latest entrant into the digital nomad visa fold, however, does not come without controversy. Draft regulations to South African Immigration Regulations were submitted to the public for feedback in February, but the finalized amendments that went into effect ended up being identical to the draft regulations. This prompted criticism that the Minister of Home Affairs did not take any public commentary into consideration.

The new South African digital nomad visa, categorized as a visitor visa, may be issued for up to three years provided that the applicant works for a foreign employer and makes a minimum of ZAR 1 million ($53,600).

Critics of the new visa take issue with the fact that visa holders would not have to register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) if their visa is for a period of less than six months within one year. Because this tax exemption is not covered under the current Income Tax Act (ITA), the law would need to be updated, prompting even more legal headaches.

south africa

Other issues include the treatment of digital nomads’ software products. Under new amendments to the South African Copyright Bill, universities and other institutions could copy software without paying the creators of these products. Finally, it remains unclear whether freelancers can apply for the digital nomad visa and whether the minimum annual salary requirement of ZAR 1 million is a net or gross amount. These are all important concerns and it seems that none of them were taken into account between the draft and the final laws put into effect.

Other Countries in Africa Offering Digital Nomad Visa

If South Africa’s new digital nomad visa issues seem like a lot to unpack or the required salary sounds too high, digital nomad visas from three other African countries are also available.

Cape Verde is the easiest digital nomad visa gateway to Africa, only requiring proof of a $1500 bank balance for the last six months along with passport and insurance documentation.

Mauritius, on the other hand, requires that applicants earn $1500 per month and come from a list of 114 countries.

Namibia is the third African country to offer a digital nomad visa, but you can only stay for six months and will need to earn $2,000 per month.

With 54 countries in Africa and only four that currently have digital nomad visas, the continent of Africa is just getting started on the digital nomad scene but is sure to offer much more in the future. No matter which African country you choose, as we have seen with the concerns raised with the South African visa, it is important to do your homework and check with a tax representative to ensure that you are complying with the requirements and prepared for the implications of moving to a new country! And finally, we wonder: which African country will be next to welcome digital nomads?

Another great networking/adventure opportunity has opened to digital nomads looking to expand their international connections and entrepreneurial skills while cruising the seas of France, Spain, and Italy.

The popular cruise line Virgen Vogages has launched the Scarlet Summer Season Pass, a travel pass that allows holders to book a month-long cruise trip across the Mediterranean Sea.

If you’ve been wondering if your work-life balance could use a little more life, we have the voyage offer for you,” Virgin Voyages wrote in a statement.

On board the Scarlet Lady ship, digital nomads and remote workers will have access not only to a pool of international like-minded people but also to perks such as free Wi-Fi, drip and espresso coffee, laundry services, and other WFH essentials.

Other benefits include straightforward dining and on-shore excursion reservations, a dedicated concierge, food service, non-alcoholic drinks and fitness classes, as well as access to luxury amenities reserved for exclusive guests.

If ready to engage in this adventure, purchase the pass for as little as $9,990 for two people. This represents a reduction of 30 percent when compared to regular cruise fares, according to the company.

Keep in mind that if you don’t have a travel partner you’ll need to pay the whole fee by yourself. In such a case, we recommend you consider more affordable alternatives.

Book your tickets to depart in June, July, August, or September on a vessel capable of hosting up to 2,700 guests.

Nomad Cruise Returns: The Ultimate Networking Opportunity For Digital Nomads

With the idea of “connecting with a global community and making friends for life,” Johannes Voelkner created the Nomad Cruise, the first and largest “Digital Nomad Conference,” over the Atlantic Sea, back in 2015.

Since then, this out-of-the-box business idea has become a collection of unforgettable trips, an ever-growing community, and unique entrepreneurial experiences.

Sailing on the Nomad Cruise means that you’ll be surrounded by more than 200 like-minded people who are also eager to teach, learn, connect, create and share outstanding experiences that’ll enrich your life both personally and professionally.

How much is a digital nomad visa worth to you? In South Korea, it will not only require you to be an employee with a contract but also earn roughly the equivalent of USD 5,333 per month. This high income requirement has doused the fire of initial excitement that many Koreaphiles felt for South Korea’s new F-1-D Workation Visa that launched in January. In the first months of 2024, only 31 people have officially applied.

So much for “If you build it, they will come.” Why even build it if you’re going to keep the doors locked? Japan, which just launched its digital nomad visa program, also has strict income requirements, asking applicants to earn about $5,530 per month. It is too early to gauge how popular Japan’s program will be, though it would not be surprising to see similar results to its East Asian neighbor.

Jeju Island – South Korea

Due to lower average incomes in other parts of the world, the required monthly salary to apply for a digital nomad visa is much lower.  According to Freelancermap, in Finland, you only need to make 25% of the Korean requirements – $1,315 per month. In Spain, you need roughly 2,500 per month, and in flashy Dubai, you only need to make $3,500 per month, all considerably cheaper than South Korea.

The high income requirements imposed by South Korea make one question the ultimate value of jumping through the hoops to get a workation visa. If the F-1-D only grants you one year in the country, with the option to extend for two, would it be better to stay for three 90-day stints in the country if you won’t receive any questions for doing so? Sure, you can’t register a phone number or buy tickets online without a resident card in South Korea, but is that really worth being required to work on an employment contract and maintain a certain salary to live there for the full year?

The UK may have a better solution for attracting remote workers: make them feel at home with only a stamp in their passport. In December 2023, they updated their immigration policy. Travelers to the UK can now work remotely, provided it’s not the main reason for their visit. The remote work includes taking business calls, participating in remote meetings, and email correspondence.

Busan – South Korea

In the end, South Korea may attract more tourist dollars by doing away with the workation visa altogether. Would it be better to extend the period of stay to six months for visitors and relax the rules around remote work? We will just have to wait and see what the South Korean government decides after it analyzes the data.

For the freelancers working online who dream of living there, the land of cosmetics, K-pop, and kimchi will have to wait…for now.

If you’ve been following recent trends in Portugal, you may have noticed a common theme: digital nomads being blamed for the increase in the cost of living across the country, particularly in Lisbon and Porto.

The impact of the digital nomads is seen as twofold: not only have they been welcomed in through various tax incentives including the Non-Habitual Residence (NHR) program, allowing them to pay lower tax rates than the locals, but they have also helped to drive up the rent prices in Lisbon by more than 37% in 2022 alone, according to the Portugal News. Add in the fact that high-wealth individuals, some of whom also continue to work remotely, were able to buy property in Portugal’s two largest cities in exchange for golden visas from 2011-2022, and it’s easy to point the finger at digital nomads for higher prices. But are they really to blame?

According to Politico, 16,000 digital nomads were living in Lisbon last year, a city with a population of 3 million in 2023. This is roughly .5% of total Lisbon residents. Digital nomads, according to Gonçalo Hall, comprise only .1% of the total tourism numbers in Portugal, which also reached record numbers in 2023 with 30 million visitors to the country, as reported by the European Travel Information and Authorization System.

Digital Nomad Hype In Portugal Causing Youth Exodus From The Country

In the meantime, open EU borders allow local Portuguese to become nomadic themselves and go where they can be paid best. They may get location-based work in other EU countries or find remote work and choose to work around the world. At the same time, EU citizens looking for better weather and the chance to live near the beach can move to Portugal with very little paperwork, and many could qualify for the reduced NHR tax rate before this tax benefit closed at the end of 2023.

For example, although German citizens are paid in the same currency, the fact that German wages are much higher allow Germans to afford higher rent in Lisbon, and landlords are happy to charge higher rents if there are no legal controls against it. In fact, it was only recently, in 2023, that the Portuguese government moved to put in rent increase controls, but this only applied to new lease contracts that succeeded contracts signed in the last five years. New housing going up for rent or those being leased for the first time can be set to any rent that the landlord chooses.

When you travel around Lisbon in 2024, what becomes immediately apparent is the number of abandoned buildings right next door to new construction. Seemingly half of central Lisbon is under construction, but often the sign under the new construction promises expensive new apartments or fancy hotels, not any place that a hard-working middle-class Portuguese family could afford.

It’s easy to blame digital nomads for a cost of living crisis that stems from a whole range of issues.

If you want to keep the Portuguese in Portugal, start with using a portion of the money coming from tourism to increase the local wages, cap more of the rents, and give landlords incentives to rent to people with Portugal-based employers. Only then can the tide truly start to turn.

Finding a visa that is a good fit for you is key when it comes to getting the most out of the time you spend in the European Union as a digital nomad, and certain countries offer better opportunities for long-term travelers than others.

While the easiest visas to obtain and the most lucrative countries to visit can vary from person to person and nationality to nationality, Spain, Portugal, and Estonia tend to be relatively straightforward options for many digital nomads from around the world.

Spain

Travelers from outside the EU can obtain a Spanish Digital Nomad Visa that is initially valid for 12 months and can be renewed for up to five years. This visa allows digital nomads to work remotely for a non-Spanish company, as well as earn up to 20 percent of their overall income by working for a local business to get even more out of the experience of living like a local.

Applicants for this visa need to have worked for their current company for a minimum of three months and be able to prove that they make at least €28k per year. Visitors who apply for a full 12-month visa will need to spend a minimum of six of those months in Spain to maintain their eligibility for the program.

Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Spain

  • Barcelona: great weather, well-connected airport, biggest nomad community in Spain.
  • Madrid: culture, food scene, well-connected airport.
  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: big nomad community, eternal spring weather.
  • Palma de Mallorca: well-connected airport, great weather, touristy.
  • Marbella: nightlife, great weather, wealthy community.

Portugal

It is no longer as easy for digital nomads in Portugal to claim non-habitual resident status to avoid paying local taxes as they were before 2023, but this country still provides a visa program that is relatively easy for many visitors that make a minimum of €36,480 per year to qualify for. The new version of this program, called NHR 2.0, was launched on January 1.

NHR 2.0 offers similar benefits to digital nomads, but it focuses on attracting a smaller number of applicants who primarily work in certain fields that provide the most value to businesses and other organizations in Portugal.

Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Portugal

  • Lisbon: World’s biggest digital nomad community, weather, affordable.
  • Porto: affordable, culture, walkable city.
  • Ericeira: chill vibes, big digital nomad community, weather.

Estonia

Estonia’s digital nomad visa program allows visitors from any country to spend up to 12 months in the country as long as they make a minimum of €3,504 per month and are employed, self-employed, or work as a freelancer outside of Estonia. Visitors will only need to pay Estonian taxes if they spend more than 183 consecutive days in the country within that time frame.

Unlike many countries’ visa options, an Estonian digital nomad visa is only valid for 12 months and cannot be renewed. However, there are plenty of other exciting places to explore across the EU and around the world once you finish your year in Estonia!

Best Cities for Digital Nomads in Estonia

  • Tallinn: The capital is the only place saturated with digital nomads in Estonia. It has a great history and a startup & entrepreneur community.

Florida is a paradise for digital nomads because of its pleasant climate and welcoming regulations. Its allure extends beyond the beaches to include the simplicity of relocating.

Florida is ranked among the top US states for digital nomads by Bluepillow and other experts. Are you curious as to why? Let’s look into it.

Is there an American Digital Nomad Visa?

Getting the appropriate visa is necessary if you want to live as a digital nomad in the US. Though there isn’t a specific visa for digital nomads in the country, there are other visas that have comparable functions.

These include authorizations like the Visa Waiver Program, B-1 Business Visa, and H-1B Visa.

Why Florida

best beaches in key west floridabest beaches in key west florida

Florida offers outstanding modern facilities for digital nomads in addition to a breathtaking coastline and pleasant climate.

The third fastest high-speed internet in the US is available at the state’s cafes, restaurants, and coworking spaces, in addition to networking and socializing opportunities.

Furthermore, convenient travel within Florida as well as to other states and countries is made possible by its outstanding airport connectivity.

No State Income tax

Digital nomads usually have tax responsibilities in their home country as well as in the United States. Some authorities suggest that they might need to inform the IRS about their earnings and fulfill their tax obligations accordingly.

Fortunately, Florida offers tax advantages. Its lack of state income tax allows digital nomads to reside here with minimal tax burdens and financial peace of mind.

Situated in the heart of San Jose amidst charming cafes and restaurants, Costa Rica Backpackers Hostel has unveiled a dedicated Workstation designed for global digital nomads.

Among the amenities offered at the Workstation are complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, complimentary coffee, tea, and water, free parking, standing desks equipped with electrical outlets, ergonomic seating, access to printing, copying, and scanning facilities, colonial-style rooms with wooden flooring, and access to a tropical garden.

“Our patrons at the Workstation building have easy access to our hospitality accommodations there as well as right next door at Costa Rica Backpackers and Costa Rica Guesthouse,” said Vincent Garnier, owner of a hospitality group created in 2001 in the country.

As per Alexandra Gonzalez, general manager of three local accommodations, digital nomads perceive Costa Rica’s cost-of-living index to be about half that of the USA and many European countries.

The idea of establishing a backpackers’ hostel in Latin America was ignited in 1995 by Vincent Garnier, the owner of a local renowned hospitality group.

The Costa Rica Workstation marks the most recent expansion endeavor among several others being contemplated by Garnier and his management team.
