Though Bali was not planning to resume tourism till 2021, but its struggling economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led the provincial government to introduce new safety measures to encourage the reopening process.
In a conference with the Indonesian Tourism Training Center (ITTC) on December 8, Bali Vice Governor, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace), stated that his government is determined to restore domestic and international visits.
Before the pandemic, nearly 60% of Bali’s economy relied on tourism.
Cok Ace also emphasized the need of cooperation with other countries to find the right strategy to achieve the goal and establish the best travel practices.
Consequently, Cleanliness, Health, Safety and Environment Sustainability (CHCE) protocols and certification were established by the government in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Transportation as well as the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) and ICAO (the International Civil Aviation Organization.)
Business such as hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions that comply with CHCE protocols, ensure customer safety and support cashless transactions.
The payments run through QRIS. Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code application launched by Bank Indonesia.
The Head of Bali Association of Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA), Komang Takuaki Banuarta, supported Cok Ace’s statement that Bali is now ready to open. However, he is hesitant about the response from international tourists.
The COVID-19 situation in Bali is up to date relatively controlled, compared to the rest of Indonesia.
With 926 active cases (from overall 15,292 cases from the beginning of the pandemic), a significant amount of restaurants, bars, and hotels resumed their activity.
Tourist attractions and beaches are moderately reopening too.
