The Nomad Residence Permit (NRP), which Malta introduced in 2021, enables remote workers and citizens of third countries to legally reside in Malta while working remotely (for foreign employees). The license is governed by the Residency Malta Agency.
The duration of the Nomad Residence Permit is one year. If you still meet the requirements, you can submit an application to renew it.
Who Qualifies for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa?
Digital nomads must:
- Be 18 or older
- Utilize telecom technologies to be able to operate remotely and independently of location.
- be a citizen of a third country
- must earn a minimum of €32,400 (or €2,700) per month in gross income.
- possess a valid travel document
- Have a valid lease or purchase agreement for a property.
- Possess a current health insurance plan.
Additionally, you must fit into one of the following groups:
- Employed: You work for a company that is licensed abroad. You must provide an employment contract.
- Self-employed: Work for a company that is registered abroad and in which you are a partner or shareholder.
- Freelance: Provide contracted freelance or consulting services to clients who permanently reside in another country.
Documents Required For Malta Digital Nomad Visa Application
The following documents must be submitted with your application for a Maltese digital nomad visa:
- “Passport
- Letter of intent
- In the case of employment: Contract of employment
- In the case of self-employment: Bank statement, certificate of incorporation, and share register
- In the case of freelancing: A services contract
- CV / Resume
- Bank statement”
After your application is approved, you must submit the following documents:
- Proof of accommodation
- Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
The Residency Malta Agency may request extra documents at any time during the application process.
Malta Digital Nomad Visa Application Process
The official website of the Residency Malta Agency states that the NRP application process is as follows:
- Gather Documents
You must first obtain all documentation required for the NFP process.

- Submit Application
The entire application process is conducted online. The application form should be completed and emailed to the appropriate authorities along with all required documents.
Submission of all required documents will be verified for your application. You will then receive a receipt with instructions for payment of the non-refundable fee of €300.
The primary applicant must make the payment through their bank account. Your application will be forwarded for review once payment is received.
- Application Review
30 working days are estimated for the application process, during which Residency Malta will conduct extensive background checks.
- Pick Up Your NRP
After your application has been approved, you will receive a letter stating that you have been approved in principle. You must then provide proof of accommodation and health insurance within 30 working days of receiving the letter.
A letter of final approval will be issued once the above items have been met.
Within two to three weeks, the residence card will be issued. You will be informed by email when the NRP is ready and asked to collect it in person from the Residency Malta offices.
