Are you also impatiently looking out for the summer season and endless days at the beach? It’s still nowhere to be seen. But a great way to make the waiting time feel shorter is to take an escape somewhere warm.
With beautiful weather all year round, the Caribbean is a great destination. However, there is one thing to consider. The infamous sargassum season is approaching, and popular hotspots like Cancun, Jamaica, or the Dominican Republic might not be the best choice.
The following islands usually have very little to no seaweed, so you can spend your holiday in paradise carefree and exactly how you dreamed.
Bonaire
Set in the shadows of Curacao, Bonaire is one of the hidden gems of the Caribbean. It boasts pristine beaches, stunning natural landscapes, and a laid-back atmosphere. Also, it’s home to spectacular coral reefs, plenty of which can be accessed straight from the shore.
Even though it’s considered one of the best snorkeling and diving locations in the world, it stays pretty much crowd-free. Therefore, it’s the perfect getaway for travelers who purposefully search for a quieter location.
Life is very slow even in its capital – Kralendijk. Stroll through its colorful streets, savor local dishes, or buy souvenirs. This charming little town is worth a stop, but a day is enough to explore it.
Bonaire occasionally does get seaweed. But it’s never as severe as in the other Caribbean islands and usually occurs only on the east coast.
Antigua & Barbuda
Have you heard of Antigua & Barbuda? The twin-island nation shouldn’t be left off anyone’s bucket list, and we will tell you why.
First things first. It offers excellent weather conditions, stunning beaches, and turquoise waters, which on their own create a phenomenal retreat. Also, it’s home to an array of luxurious resorts and boutique hotels for you to truly unwind and recharge batteries.
There’s no shortage of things to see and do either. One of the most popular activities in Antigua & Barbuda is sailing. It features steady trade winds and you will find plenty of protected harbors along the shoreline that drag sailing enthusiasts from around the globe.
For history buffs, there are plenty of sites to explore, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbor, or Betty’s Hope Sugar Plantation.
What’s more, many beaches of Antigua & Barbuda often have no sargassum, especially in early spring. So a great holiday is guaranteed if you come in April.
Grenada
Often referred to as the “Spice Isle”, Grenada is a picturesque little island covered in fragrant spice plantations, mystic rainforests, and stunning white sand beaches. Thanks to that, visitors can enjoy plenty of activities.
Reconnect with nature while hiking and birdwatching in Grand Etang National Park, Annandale Falls, or the Seven Sisters Waterfalls. If you’re interested in the island’s colonial past, don’t miss Fort George, Fort Frederick, and the Grenada National Museum.
Or simply sunbathe, sip on delicious cocktails, and relax at the beach. If you come in April, the shores should be seaweed-free, and its waters are therefore perfectly clear for diving and snorkeling.
Grenada has also been turning itself into a chocolate destination in recent years. Take a tour of one of its cocoa estates and learn about chocolate production at a chocolate factory. Or simply savor the final product at a local boutique shop.
Aruba
Do you prefer an active holiday over lazing around? With so many activities to offer, Aruba is a fantastic island to visit.
Steady trade winds make perfect conditions for various watersports, such as windsurfing, sailing, or kitesurfing. On the other hand, on the sheltered southwestern coastline, there are excellent diving opportunities.
You can also hop on an outdoor adventure. How about hiking in Arikok National Park, horseback riding, or canoeing?
Another thing that makes Aruba stand out is its nightlife scene. The best events can be found in Oranjestad – Aruba’s lively capital. No matter whether you like wild parties, live music, casinos, or cozy pubs, this island has something for everyone.
On top of that, Aruba rarely gets seaweed. And if it does, it usually isn’t bad so you can enjoy its beaches and all the fun that goes with it without a problem. Oh, and don’t forget to visit the flamboyant flamingos at Flamingo Beach.
