Home to some of the trendiest beach destinations in Europe, Spain is an ideal nearly year-round vacation spot. As we are heading into fall past the busy summer season, temperatures remain at record highs, beckoning tourists to the Southern Mediterranean coast.
In southeastern Spain, the Region of Murcia (with its capital being Murcia) is the seventh largest city in the country but is often overlooked as a travel destination. The autonomous region is between the much larger provinces of Andalusia and the Valencian Community.
Part of what is known as the Warm Coast, the region boasts 160 miles of stunning Mediterranean beaches. And with more than 320 days of sun per year, it is one of the sunniest regions in Spain.
With an average temperature of 70°F for the year, with fall temperatures averaging 86°F, with lows of 66°F in the evening, it is a great spot for a late-fall beach escapade. Even in the winter months, the average high is about 70°F.
In the region, the top four destinations include the resort towns of Los Alcázares, La Manga, and Cartagena, along with the capital, Murcia.
With a history as a traditional fishing village, Los Alcázares still has some of its small-town char, despite the now big international brands who call it home. Take part in several fiestas and festivals held throughout the year, like on October 12 for Día de la Hispanid, a vibrant national holiday in Spain.
For those wanting an exclusive beach getaway, La Manga is lined with luxury hotels either on the crystal-clear lagoon or the Mediterranean.
The coastal hub of Cartagena is one of the oldest cities in Europe with several ancient monuments still standing, oozing Spanish culture of yesteryear.
Similar to Cartagena the capital city of Murcia also has a number of historical landmarks and is steeped in cultural history. Make sure to check out the fresh and flavorful Mediterranean cuisine, like the popular marinera or zarangollo.
